Title: Cramulus! Make me understand!
Post by: Placid Dingo on October 05, 2010, 12:02:48 PM
I got two of your shirts the other day.

I never saw the back of the yellow 'Gods' T-shirt.

Could you please explain the poem to me a little?

Because I think if I understand it a bit better, I'll feel less awkward about the words 'broken condom' being on my back.

Awkward about understanding it? What's to understand?
Just say you're the best mistake ever!

(1) Thanks for buying mah shirts! (http://cramul.us/category/stuff/)
(2) sorry the poem on the back wasn't apparent from the purchase page! Hope it's not too awkward. Poems are a "cool medium", but since you asked, I'll go through what this poem means to me. (but by no means the only interpretation)

Discordia
Discordia
the more we talk of what it is
the more we know     it is not
Discordia
that waits for you to make a good point
            at the sky
                       with a sword
but guess whose face is up there, pops,
You
open the doors of the advent calendar
Discordia
is hidden in more ways than five
has revealed
in an alphabet soup you slurp
               letter by letter
telling a story of hide and seek in your parent's bed
and finding a broken condom
             in your head
                          Discordia

okay here's what this poem means TO ME

it starts off by pointing out that when you're a Discordian, Eris is not the higher power you're praying to. We don't appeal to her and hope she makes things right - she's actually a little scary. And we are rebellious by nature, but ERIS isn't the one we need to rebel against (pointing at the sky with a sword). So who is the higher power?

two things:

(1) your parents (referenced by "pops"), whose values you'll aways carry around in the back of your head.

QuoteTyler Durden: Shut up! Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?

if our fathers are our models for god, then all our teenage rebellions were very miltonesque, no? Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven and all that...

(2) well it's you, really. Your face is up there in heaven. You are the sage who makes the grass green and the flowers beautiful. You are the higher power that you must challenge and rebel against.

An advent calendar is a countdown to christmas. Visualize a young kid opening each door on the advent calendar, a piece of chocolate behind each one, getting more excited every day for the birth of christ

the next image describes eating alphabet soup and spelling out a story letter by letter. And you keep discovering these little discordias, these little coincidences.. The law of fives is never wrong! And that story you created contains an image:

you're crawling around in your parent's bed (which to me, means your parents values), and you find a broken condom (but it's in your head?)

and this could be a few different things

---the broken condom could represent that the advent calendar was counting down to a new baby brother or sister on the way, something which will change any child's life. (or an adult's life, if this is a symbolic conception of a sibling)
---if you read it so that the broken condom is in your head, then the event at the end of the advent calendar, the christ child being born, is something wonderful that you came up with. Your parents world is its foundation, but this is a NEW idea, and it's yours, and it's going to lift up and redeem the world.
---the image is also a bit oedipal -- it describes a kid's disgust in discovering evidence of his parents fornication. In his head: Discordia! because eewww gross! mom and dad don't fuck! :horrormirth:

does that answer your question? I hope it makes it feel less awkward. And how do the shirts look? I'd lovvvve to have a pic of you wearing them.

and aside from all that, a broken condom is a good symbol for creative disorder. It captures the instability inherent in any human plan. And it also references the conception of something.. I know "surprise, you're gonna be a dad" isn't a phrase a lot of us would like to hear, but it does show that something positive can be created by breaking the established order.

AND AND AND in the spirit of kopyleft remixes

if you feel weird about walking around in public with a sex reference on your back, the poem still works if you censor out that word with a black marker.  :lulz:

All good. I just wanted to have an idea of where it all came from.

I got the Hail Eris Pterodactlys too, which is a bit more in public friendly (for context, i'm a teacher in a SMALL town.)

I was pretty 0.o at first but I quite like the poem now. I like the idea of the broken condom in the head, in the bed, where the subject is in this world they've been born into and raised into, but now everything's getting bigger and everyone is seen in a new light and there's just been something snap in your head the lets unlimited creative energy escape and provides an absolute turning point.

Anyway, enough wankery now.

Also, what i really meant to say was I got shirts, like them. :D

Will send pics when i get a replacement for my camera cable.

I feel like I need to get the Che Payne shirt, and wear it with BDUs.
