Title: God Bless the Free Market
Post by: Prince Glittersnatch III on October 18, 2010, 11:21:31 PM
QuoteA pharmacist refused to give an asthma inhaler to a New Jersey woman who was suffering a major attack in the store, because she only had a $20 note - and the inhaler was $21.50.

Katherine O'Connor had left her inhaler at home and was near the local CVS pharmacy with her boyfriend when she began to suffer a major attack.

Boyfriend Jack Brown said they rushed into the store and tried to find the pharmacist while Miss O'Connor was still having the attack.

But the pharmacist refused to hand over the inhaler, which would have easily put an end to Miss O'Connor's suffering, because the couple was short one dollar and change.

Mr Brown said: 'I had exactly a $20 bill. It came to $21 and some change. I offered him [the pharmacist] my cell phone, my wallet. I said I live right around the corner. I come in here all the time.

I would almost forgive the pharmacist if he was doing it to be mean, but it's more likely he was doing it out of smallness.  Unpardonable.

Personally I think my eyes are a bit too far apart, and I have a bad habit of procrastinating when it comes to important things.

Look at Glittersnatch's last few posts, and ask that again.

You'd think her entire cell phone and wallet - which I'm pretty sure comes to a greater sum than $21.50 - would have been sufficient down payment for the inhaler, while she ran (well, walked and wheezed) home for some change.

Incidentally, something about this story isn't ringing right, beyond it being reported in the Daily Mail (I know, there are other sources, all probably cribbed from the original source without verification).  I used to have asthma, before I thankfully outgrew it, and if I was having an attack in a store, I'd barely be able to talk, let alone walk around the corner to go home and get more change.  But then, my asthma was pretty bad, and I know there are varying grades of it and the attacks people can suffer.

Just saying, it still reads a little odd, from where I'm sitting.

If its true, then its not an issue of Free Market, Managed Health Care or Anything Political beyond the simple statement:

I think we need a meme, like a bumper sticker or symbol or mascot or something

which says if you watch humans suffer and you don't do anything about it because it's not profitable, or because being a human being is not required by your job,

it's the same as the SS soldiers who were "just following orders".

we should actually write letters to people like this -- and the firemen who watched that family's trailer burn down and didn't help because the dad didn't pay $100 in fire protection money.

this cultural is so insular sometimes. everybody's really trying to survive on their own island. resources are thin. sharing outside of your tribe is nonexistent. it's a cut throat world.

Dear Asshole:

You were perfectly capable of easing another human beings suffering, but you sat and watched instead. I know you have tons of excuses - like "I was only following orders". But if we have to be trapped on this rock with rubberneckers like you, you should at least do us the courtesy of being human once in a while, even if you're on the clock.

Signed,

Humanity

The Free Market Works, But Only If You Aren't An Asshole

Be Human Or GTFO

You should help your fellow humans... its embarrassing that I have to tell you that.

Doing Nothing Is Sometimes The Worst Option

Save Our Species, OR We're All Fucked

Money is useful, Humanity more so.

Cram,

discussing the topic taking the article at face value is one thing, but, like Cain said.... this is not necessarily an infallible source here.
writing letters is a definitely a good way of eventually beating down the wrong guy.
has there been the firemen's side of the story told?
or this shopkeep's?

i like the idea though...
and Rat, some of those are pretty good.  :)

yeah, the meme would be less about these specific situations, which are probably tied up in weird reporting,

and more of a wake up call to everybody: "your job is a poor excuse to be dis-compassionate"
