The whole black hair/self esteem thing has always been so difficult for black girls, and in fact I think it's more difficult than issues around skin color.

We don't have black people here, so I was pretty surprised to find that black girls didn't like their hair and that it's a big issue.

I remember asking friends about their hair cause they couldn't go swimming or complained about it and I never understood, till I got older.

There're only two black girls in my year at school- and I don't really know them. There aren't many coloured people at all really.
I know what you mean about being surprised that they didn't like their hair.
