Jesus fucking christ, SRSLY?
A) You take the one religion that doesn't require anyone's approval or any community and you talk about it? What's there to say that would matter? You're fucking up my reason for avoiding social dynamics.
B) Whatta pack of assholes.
:lulz:
:lulz:
And then you STUCK AROUND ??!
Good to have you on the pack, asshole.
After that first time I didn't come back for six months.
I couldn't help myself, I guess. And, really, where else is there to go?
Where you gonna flounce to, fools?
Pinnacle of internetting, right here.
:x
I'd say that your first impression was entirely accurate.
You buy that fursuit let?

I guess this should have been my first post.
Then again...you fuckers would have eaten me alive.

fucking cheers that, cat
I occasionally stop by this taoist forum
you'd think -- taoists -- probably a bunch of really chill, thoughtful, interesting people, if not a little sedate
but NOOOOOOOO - there are factions, assholes, pecking orders -- the tone is set by people who post most, so a few dicks manage to make the whole community fairly contentious
I think it has to do with the architecture of forums. Put a group of people in a forum environment for a long enough period of time and rather predictable dynamics will emerge, no matter what topic brings everybody together.
My hope for this place is lodged in the idea that it's a venue which can motivate people to meatspace action.
If we are a forum where people can come up with new ideas, rather than just linking us to cool ideas they read about on the net, then we are doing better than 95% of the forums out there on the net.
If you can put an idea on this forum and people will pick it up and develop it and run with it and turn it into something happening in the 3D universe, then we are doing better than 99% of the forums out there on the net.
All the social stuff we do here is cool, I'm glad to know all of you as friends. It's really sweet that I can travel to many places in the world and know I've probably got a couch to crash on. But it's also not what keeps me here, what I love about this place is that there's stuff like the Black Iron Prison, Intermittens, LOGD, Day of Discord, and stuff like that. I love that we keep brewing and disagreeing and stirring the pot, and that every so often we actually pull something cool out of that pot.

Damn! That made me realize that probably 75% of my posts (not counting loose puns, jokes, babble and mittens)
are just that ... :(
And you're right! New ideas are a zillion times better than just linking some old idea, hoping that somebody will take an interesting spin on it for you.
That's a stupid thing.
Note that this doesn't mean I'll stop posting links (especially not the SEO thread since people seem to be enjoying that), but it does mean I'm going to try and de-skew that ratio somewhat.
Because really, if you want an interesting links feed, there's already Reddit, which is pretty good.
But if you want a place that is NEW IDEAS made from 100% PURE CONCENTRATED NEW IDEAS, then this place should attempt to be the right place for that.

I'm not suggesting that it should be one or the other
or that the presence of linking to cool stuff somehow prevents the formation of new ideas
if you take a browse through a few internet forums, you'll see that they essentially exist as a means to comment on some topic. 99% of the time, stuff posted on forums doesn't motivate anybody to action or inspire them to create something or get them up from their keyboards, unless the forum is specifically about one brand of activism or subcultural participation. Most of the time it's somebody posting a news article or meme that somebody else came up with, and then everybody reacting to it.
We saw it with the Adam Weishaupt Society, where we'd come up with some evocative fake news article and post it at 15 different message boards and it would produce 15 nearly identical threads. "Oh shit, that's terrible!", "Those were bad parents", "OMG I can't believe it", etc etc etc
we have built a community where new action and new thought are encouraged, and that's a very rare quality for a forum.
