Title: Uh oh...
Post by: LMNO on November 19, 2010, 05:37:56 PM
I may have just pwned myself.

That Bert and Ernie gif that was my avatar was from jj.am, which is a nws blockpage site.

IT just took my computer, saying it had a virus that "kept pointing the browser to a restricted webpage".

I suspect it's not a virus, it's that pd.com kept directing to jj.am.

So, I'm clearly in violation of company policy.

Now, I'm just waiting for security to show up and escort me out.

I may actually have to pull the "Discordianism is my religion, you can't fire mr for that" card.

your best bet might be to explain it like you just did here.  they're tech guys, they should understand what you mean, then promise not to do it again.

good luck.

-A review of your history will show it pointing towards JUST that image.  No naughty stuff.  NOt that I really know such things, but a search of what you've actually been looking at has always been invovled in incidents I've seen.  Obviously, no REALLY REAL PORN

-It would pooint the same to anyone else who accesses the site, right?  You could be pointe at all sorts of URL's you have no control over.

-Companies SHOULD block pages they don't like.  If it's not blocked, they owe you the benefit of the doubt and a reasonable look at the content accessed.

Okay, now I'm paranoid.  Though, I get the impression they aren't terribly concerned with what happens here.  Most of the rest of the hospital doesn't even realize we exist.

Though I guess I could just point to all of the drug threads and say i was doing research.

I know for a fact that this site pings our nanny monitor for calling to otherwise blocked sites because I've discussed the firewall with our tech guy, who happens to be the owners son.  He doesn't care but he did ask me what this place was.  When I told him, he gave me this slightly squinty eyed, head leaned back slightly look and just went "uh hu"

never talked about it again.

My employer uses Websense to block stuff.  So most of the avatars and nearly all images posted here get blocked.  Though, LMNO's did come up.  What I find odd is that this site doesn't get blocked by websense under the message-board category when a lot of other places do.  Why is that?

Because it's listed under "religious" instead of "forums and social networking".

Fiegn ignorance. "I'm not good with computers", "I wasn't looking up anything restricted", etc.

Well...

FALSE ALARM.

Apparently, the 'new' laptop they gave me already had a virus built into it that redirected to Russia.

It was nice of them to wait four hours before telling me though. :|

I shouldn't laugh.  It's from relief, mostly, though.  I'd hate to see ANYONE get fired for being here.  I used to be afraid of that myself till I got high up enough in my department to figure out they have no way of knowing wtf it is we are doing outside what they can see in their software.

I'd also like to apologize to the board for panicking and upping the level of stress and paranoia.

November shouldn't suck this hard. I thought that was February.

It probably means that this coming February is going to be the roughest one yet.

Change your underwear, crack open a beverage, and breathe a sigh of relief until the next clusterfuck magically appears.
