So they are using procedural measures to block a bill in the House that would expand the free lunch program to cover more kids.

QuoteWASHINGTON — House Republicans have temporarily blocked legislation to feed school meals to thousands more hungry children.
Republicans used a procedural maneuver Wednesday to try to amend the $4.5 billion bill, which would give more needy children the opportunity to eat free lunches at school and make those lunches healthier. First lady Michelle Obama has lobbied for the bill as part of her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity.
A bill has already passed in the Senate, this would let it go to the President so it could be signed into law. This procedure would basically make it impossible for the bill to be voted on before the new GOP-led House takes power next year. Basically, a cynical plot to deny Obama a win.
Also, it appears that when the GOP talks about "listening to constituents", that doesn't include the poor people. Yeah, I know, not a huge shock.
But, this is the new America
tm the People wanted. Who am I to argue?
What the hell. Sure, we can drop 3 billion on CIT Group to prolong their death, why not. But feeding hungry kids? What are we, communists?

But if we feed those kids, it will only encourage irresponsible people to have even more children that they can't afford.

Wasn't there a Southern Congressman from like Alabama or something last year that said free lunch programs just encourage the poor to "breed like dogs" or something like that?

:argh!: I'm pretty fucking mad about this. There are kids out there who depend on these - school provided meals are pretty much the only decent meal they get because their parents are so poor.

If I were you I wouldn't go to MW and read about how being poor is a series of bad choices and their own fault. You might get real pissed.
I'll keep that in mind...

Well duh, how hard is it to put a maneki neko in your window, or put some basil under your welcome mat, and visualize lots of money?

Even if it truly were a crime to be poor, how is it the children's fault?
Shit like this pisses me off to no end.

Are you the last person in America who thought politicians actually give a shit about the people? :)

They are really bad people.
If the poor kids feel so bad about it, they should vote for someone else.
Oh, wait, that's right, they cant. Nevermind then!

Ah yes. THIS, America, is the government YOU asked for.
"Stray animals" indeed.

Fuck it, let's just implement the modest proposal of Jonathan Swift. Two birds with one stone, right?
Haven't they ever heard of Oprah or "The Secret"? They obviously are falling behind on their guided mega-wanting for money.
On Thursday, the House took up the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010. The bill would ensure that child marriage is recognized as a human rights violation, and develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such marriages around the world. The legislation seemed likely to garner strong bipartisan support in Congress, and in the Senate, it did. But last night, the bill was voted down in the House by Republicans who argued the bill is too costly and could lead to increased abortions -- gripes the measure's supporters say have no basis in reality and are just excuses to kill the popular bill.
The measure, introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), passed the Senate by unanimous consent and attracted a list of 42 cosponsors, including Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.). It also had the support of nonpartisan groups like the YWCA. On Dec. 6, former president of Ireland Mary Robinson and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post, praising the United States for stepping up: "This act illustrates how support for securing a just and healthy life for every woman and girl transcends politics."

I never heard of this bill.
Neither had I. Fucking House Republicans WOULD vote it down, though.

Wow, this thread has shifted. Damn, didn't hear about that either. At all. Not surprised, mind you, considering the DC News Blackout thread.
Here's a quote that illuminates both topics:

I love Michael Pollan. Whenever I think journalism is dead, I'm reminded of Pollan's significant efforts on bring the food problem into the light.
Cristiane Amanpour, in her ever-increasing efforts to actually bring NEWS back to the Sunday morning talking bobblehead shows, gave a great spot on "stunting" and the fact that 3rd world children are 1/3 or more smaller than children of "well-fed" countries. And we are sending shitty food to them that doesn't help them grow to boot (all corn (surprise surprise!) and no protein--milk powder in this case--as there was when this effort began in Africa, for instance...in the last few years the milk powder has been mysteriously "dropped" in the mix of food we drop to them by the ton).
