Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Kansas-based Church - monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center - is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.
The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.
According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Edwards, the estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

I am not surprised.
They have every right to picket.
They're scumbags, but they have the right.
Yes they do and yes they are.
Yeah. I absolutely hate what they do, but not as much as I would hate attempts to deprive them of their right to do it.
On what grounds are they picketing? Just because the brass will be there and they will make asses of themselves with signs as usual?
Because she used a fertility doctor to conceive her last two children.
... well, fuck. That's the last straw.

Okay. They're not only assholes but class-A idiots. They CLEARLY have no real agenda and have given up pretending they don't just want to be mediawhores. Stupidest reason to picket some poor woman's funeral, evar. Not that they need to have great ones with such a heinous act, but now they're just being lazy.
Well of course they are going to picket her funeral. They're Morons.
I will be surprised if they are allowed. The last funeral here they tried to picket, they ended up a couple of miles away from the actual cemetary before they could get to "public property". The police kept making them move as the cemetary, funeral home and surrounding areas were privately owned.
I really hate the WBC people. Yes, they are within their rights and by no means do I want those rights violated, however, just because they can, doesn't mean they should.
A proper Funeral protest, was when someone dug up Oliver Cromwell's body, and put his head on a spike outside the Houses of Parliament, where it remained for many years.

It was a great day for both England and Ireland.
One of the things that's truly amazing about WBC is the amount of hate directed at them. You could have a Marxist and a Libertarian joining up to shout them down. I saw one of them show up on Fox News once. They fucking hated her, and it wasn't just because of them being unpatriotic. They were getting really worked up over them.
They're abhorrent little fuckers, but as long as they remain abhorrent, at least the American public has SOME sense.
Indeed. IIRC, one of the more recent pickets, a bunch of people who opposed the picketing placed themselves between the WBC assholes and the funeral. Best way to deal with them, ever. Community support for the family and prevented the funeral (mostly) from being marred by their presence.
I hope something like that happens at Ewards's funeral - people placing themselves between the WBC people and the funeral proper. I dunno if it will, but it would be nice.

Actually, I was
sorta hoping daydreaming about a buncha people with big baseball bats would get out of a lot of vehicles and bit the motherfucking shit outta the Westboro gang. But then, that's promulgating violence, and I'd never do such a thing. Ever.

Well, I said it as a FANTASY.
And pisssshhhh! don't care.
I wonder if anyone will turn up and protest rejoice when that senile old prick of a Pastor carks it.
Probably. I wouldn't, because that would be falling into the same mold he did, but I have no doubt someone will. And then maybe his family will get the picture, but I wouldn't count on it.
I'd like to show the Phelps family what evil and depraved really is.

You're right of course. It doesn't look good, vociferously railing at these numb fucks for their appallingly crass behaviour at funerals, then going and doing exactly the same thing when it's one of them being put in the ground.
I have no problem with Phelps having a nice, small, dignified funeral. So much so, in fact, that I'd like him to be present himself, alive, and conscious, and nailed into his coffin so he can enjoy the dignity of it himself. It would be an awful; shame if he were to miss it, just because he was dead. And I think his faith is probably strong enough for his God to afford him this special privilege, in thanks for a lifetime of selflessly spreading His Word among the Hell bound Sinners, that even one of them might find their way to the Light, and be Saved. Hallelujah!

In the end, only five Westboro congregants showed for the protest, which took place in a cold, steady rain.
Other public mourners included as many 150 supporters who gathered a few blocks away from the church for a counter-demonstration against a group of picketers from the controversial Westboro Baptist Church.

I would love to picket a Sunday morning service at the church. Give them a taste of their own medicene.
Yeah, bringing them some more media attention will really show them what for!

I wasn't thinking of getting the media involved...
Unless you are doing it by yourself and very quietly, I would suspect it would be difficult to protest one of the most controversial groups in the country and NOT get media coverage.
In any event, I'm not sure picketing them would really do much. Not trying to be a Douglas Downer here but a group like that isn't ever going to listen to reason, or anything with a passing semblance to reason. For them to get a taste of their own medicine they'd have to give a shit about what others think about them, and clearly, they don't.
It could have a beneficial point, though... the evangelicals are getting more and more vocal in the last ten years and most people who oppose them never speak up, so it appears that they hold more ground. Clearly they do not. Niamh's picketing would show that there are people who are sick and tired of the rhetoric, and are willing to voice their disapproval.
I mean, when Janet Jackson's nipple popped out on live television people complained... but how many people were NOT offended? Who knows, none of them wrote in... only the ones who were offended wrote in. Probably in crayon.
But I think the Westboro clan are so far gone off the edge of reality that it wouldn't matter. Public opinion and public pressure was able to sway that kooky pastor in Florida to refrain from burning the Koran. He seemed to be just sane enough to figure out that it was a stupid idea, and smartly caved.
But I think Westboro are in a totally different league. I mean, nobody likes them. Even Bill O and Fox News types will rail against them. Doesn't seem to matter. They don't care.

Gotta agree with Hoop here. And I'd add that even most of the ones who wrote in offended, were actually aroused rather than offended. They were then offended by their own arousal, and wrote in out of con-fu. Pretty much like when Nigel's nipple almost brought TCC to a grinding halt.

No. It wouldn't.
It would simply make the people doing it
a different kind of bad guy. It would in no way exonerate Phelps, either morally or in the public eye. At most it would get him some more press, and get the people doing it a prison term.
