Title: Grand Theft Auto gives a nod to discordia
Post by: Lies on December 28, 2010, 04:55:04 AM
Please leave this thread and fuck off if you already know this, but:

I noticed while playing grand theft auto that there's a mock company that sells "Eris" brand things like shoes and tshirts, very clever and subtle nod to discordianism :)

http://gta.wikia.com/Eris

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot-QL-v1WMo

I only just noticed it while playing GTA4 but apparently its in GTA3 as well as they are mentioned in a radio advertisement.

In GTA4 there's a whole website with the mock up webpage dedicated to it as well.

So yeah, that's kinda awesome.

Sounds more like a standard parody brand.  Replacing one one Greek goddess with another to parody Nike shoes.

Except if you go the the mock website in the game they basically spell it out for you. Well, they give you all the letters, you still have to work it out for themselves.
And COME ON.
as if (http://images.wikia.com/gtawiki/images/e/eb/Eris-GTASA-logo.png) is an accident.

Eris is a logical alternative for Nike because Nike is the personification of victory, and and one form of Eris is the personification of athletic competition. [/gas on fire]

You can't *not* find out about discordianism if you look up eris on the web.
And you can't know what the 5 fingered hand of eris looks like without  looking up discordianism.

Ergo, its a nod to discordianism, you skeptic bastards!!

Look, it's a fucking doubled letter E. It's not much of a stretch from the bare name. It's not unique enough that it had to be intended as a 5-fingered Hand.

Who cares what was intended?  It's publicity either way although granted "Eris" is getting a lot of that these days as noted above.

Planets, phones, virtual shoes...  Terrible insane goddess.  It's a thing.

One time, Eris rode to battle alongside Typhon, while Zeus rode to battle with Biaa and Nike - and no i cannot find the source.

radio ad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_III_soundtrack

Eris Running Shoes - Parodies the controversy over Nike's controversial outsourcing and labor practices (Eris, like Nike, is a Greek goddess). This sneaker company employs children ("It's fun! We get to play with knives!", "Yesterday, I made a dollar!" "My friend Joey sewed his hands together!"). Eris' slogan is "Eris Running shoes, always running...from something". Eris appears in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as one of the clothing brands, and are promoting their "Rampage" line.

Look, IMO, you guys are all doing it wrong. The argument on whether or not this is or isn't an actual nod to Discordianism is pointless. As Discordians (y'know, the "reely-reel" type), we should be propagating the idea that someone at Rockstar Games is secretly a Discordian, and putting subtle references to Discordianism into their game. Regardess of the reality of the situation.

Basicly, it doesn't matter whether or not these guys are Discordian, what matters is that we say they are, and if we can get others to believe it.

At the time GTA III was a very progressive game, its influence can still be seen in most modern games.
The successive games have all been one step forward two steps back but continue to do well solely because of the success of III.

Nice.
And Kinnect isn't exactly copying the wii, I've tried it and I have to admit... it's a lot more superior.

The only thing that pisses me off HARDCORE when it comes to 360 is that you have to PAY to play online games.
WTF micro$oft, I understand you spent a lot of money making it and need to recuperate costs, but FFS, if I buy a game that's meant to be played online, I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THE "PRIVILEGE" OF BEING ABLE TO PLAY IT ONLINE, YOU FUCKS.

The best part is that Microsoft has now taken to making its own games borderline unplayable without multiplayer to try and get more Live subscriptions.  I've been playing Fable 3 and about half the weapon upgrades are only achievable if you play online.

The problem with Kinnect, as I see it, is that it costs as much as a console on its own.  That and its ruining the dance game thing for me.  I like the mats damn it.   :argh!:

Hey, you guys DO know that different people and, if you're not logged in, different regions get different search results for looking up the same things in Google, right?

In other words, arguing over whether your search results are different is FUCKING RETARDED.

my xmas loot
sounders jersey and hoodie
and xbox 360 (their sponsor)
:D

and wtf is with everyone copying the wii

kinnect
ps move  :horrormirth: it, got to move it move it

50 bucks for an entire years subscription, its not that much.

Also,

Quotemore superior

First page of google results for "eris": Wiki entries for "Eris (dwarf planet)" and "Eris" disambiguation page.

Entries for the goddess Eris at theoi.com and pantheon.org

Two news articles about the discovery of the dwarf planet Eris

and references to the Droid Eris.

Nothing about Discordia on page one.  :fnord:

I don't know what google page *your* looking at, but discordianism comes up as *my* second result when I look up Eris on google.

Uh, I think you're the only one.

Once again, Nigel is right.

Also, Discordians are everywhere, particularly in NERDLAND. Like game development. To think that was an inadvertent reference by someone who is unaware of Discordianism is about as likely as a geek who was born in 1970 never having heard of the Book of the Subgenius in the 90's. Or a San Franciscan never having heard of the Cacophony Society. It defies plausibility. Of course the reference was intentional.
