Title: UVB-76 Strangeness
Post by: Fractalbeard on December 29, 2010, 12:53:44 PM
So yesterday (Dec. 28), a friend of mine was playing with some short wave stuff. He ended up scanning the UVB-76 frequency, details here:

What it normally sounds like is here:

What my friend got is here:

First I thought it was either Alien or Russian (not that I'd recognize Russian, but it wasn't English), but on closer listening, I'm quite certain it was a computer speech synthesizer. Kind of like U96 - Das Boot.

Weird, anyhow.

I just learned, however, you can filter the noise with Audacity :)

ECH speaks Russian, as I recall, he might be able to tell you if it is or not.

The inteference is annoying, but it does sound like the message is repeating.  And there was a story earlier this summer about a number of Number Stations suddenly broadcasting in Russian.

I think on wikipedia it said that the second half of this year was a busy time for the signal.

I think its an actual voice, the weirdness to the sound is probably due to shortwave reception. Sometimes HAM sounds that way as well esp on the HF side. The Wikipedia entry states that a live voice occasionally transmits and there have been more of them in late 2010... so I would say that's probably what we're hearing.

Me and a friend were listening to UVB-76 over some internet stream a few months back when they were doing some kind of maintenance thing and transmitting various voices and test things. Lots of OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT WHAT THE MOTHERFUCK IS THAT moments ~ It's fun to listen to.

http://uvb-76.blogspot.com/ is the internet stream site.
