Unless this has a specific purpose it will kill this board. If it is just going to be another place to be silly, count me gone.

You're saying PD.com will only be me, you, and RWHN?

I was merely observing that some of us don't have access to the full compliment of Facebook options while at work, which renders us unable to employ the "Groups" function.  Ergo, our only recourse is PD.com.

I don't facefuck often enough for it to be an issue.  Oh and the work thing.

But I don't mind the facefuck GROUP as it is another manifestation of the same thing.  It's interesting to listen to everyone's comments, just like it's interesting here.

Yeah, me neither. I've been on FB for years and am a member of a few groups. I don't see why that one would replace the forum, as the format is completely different. As far as I can tell it's just a good way to mingle with some spags who don't PD.

If the FB group bugs you, leave it.

FB is mostly useful for trolling and finding out who's having parties.

I dunno, when I have time off, I can handle checking in and updating and shit.  I just have mixed too many levels of people in my life to allow FB to handle most of my shit.  Plus you just have this overwhelming DESIRE to PERFORM there.

Shit...just like PD.  Well, I sorta got over that with PD (if you all haven't noticed by now), but with FB, it's still all old people and blue hairs I know out in IRL.  And colleagues.  Oh, that's a mistake--putting your COLLEAGUES on there.

Did I hide them when I joined Cram's and Rog's groups?  Hell naw.  I sold them the "embrace the chaos before it consumes you" first.  They get dibs.  :lulz:  Lucky fuckers.

Oh it's fucking charming. Not only can people add you to groups without your consent, but you automatically get emails every time anyone posts to the group, and it looks like most people can't turn those emails off.

Great way to filter out your uncool friends without having to manually consider them and unfriend them :D :D

(although I dunno, even if someone signed me up for a group I'd agree with or enjoy, I still would be pissed off if it suddenly turned out to have swamped my email inbox) (actually, no I wouldn't because I'd probably already filtered all facebook emails into a separate folder, mark them read and skip my inbox altogether)
Title: Re: Facebook group
Post by: Cramulus on January 14, 2011, 02:50:50 PM
Since a few people have suspected me of trying to split PD or kill IRC or something, I just want to be clear about my motivation in starting the DS2011 FB group -- it has nothing to do with PD. In fact, most of the people in it are not PD members. Of the first 80 people I added, It was about 40% PD, 40% random Discordians I know from the net (writers, bloggers, pranksters, etc), 20% people I know in meatspace. I wanted to see what happened if I plugged them all into the same communication node.

My hopes aren't too lofty - from what I can tell, these FB groups are basically noise generators. The medium encourages short, pithy communications, not in depth discussions. If something emerges from the disorder, that'll be cool, but I'm not holding my breath.

One thing I thought was pretty cool: There's a dude who wanted to print a version of the PD on lulu press. He realized that to do a hardcover, he needs another 20 pages of material... so rather than inserting Kerry or RAW's intro piece, he's taking submission for new stuff to put in there. That's bad ass!

But no, I don't think the discordian society 2011 facebook group is a replacement for this community -- nor do I think we should hold back from generating new types of Discordian Societies in order to protect this one.

FB groups are noise generators and sources of endless bitching, mindless bawww-ing, and voluminous references to how people are too cool for FB and anyway the group is just useless bullshit that any real discordian would never use and fuck you Cramulus. I think most of them are like that. Rog and Lys and I were trolling in another group called Transhuman Separatists, and it seemed much the same as the DS2011. (edit: actually they were bigger douchebags because their group comes with more serious ideological baggage)

you are also seeing trolls trolling trolls - to varying degrees of success.

as for the myspace discordians -- well, they were led by Yatto.  :p

During the Party at Limbo Peak, Yatto submitted literally 44 pages of text, a straight copy and paste from his myspace group. Of that, this (http://principiadiscordia.com/cramulus/index.php?title=Myspace_Monkeys) was the only material that was relatively coherent. I think our signal to noise ratio is a little bit higher than that, but that's not really the point anyway.

What is the point?

Another part of it goes back to my first reading of the Principia at age 16. I desperately wanted to know if there really was a Discordian Society, or it was just this shit they wrote about as a joke in the 1960s. And I pledged that if none existed, I'd just act like there was a real Discordian Society until it became true.

So here we are! I hope nobody was expecting that everybody would be, like, characters from Illuminatus or something.

Just (already!) tired of the relentless negativity, even after the whopping 2 days I've been in it.

Hey Cram. That's not what I was doing. I simply wanted to know if it had a purpose and if it did what it was. The noise from it was like a bell ringing non-stop in my ear. After I did not receive an answer I simply left the group.

I only have one functioning nerve left and some ass spag from another place was already standing on it.

you make a good point. There seem to be a few different ways to use the group:

1. trolling other discordians
2. posting stuff other discordians might want to read or see
3. gnashing (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=28018.msg993842#msg993842) about how the group is not what you want it to be or how the people in it are the wrong type of Discordians

right now there's a lot of people doing #1 and #3!

though honestly, not that different from the drama cycle present at this board. Meh!

In the interests of fairness, I owe (1) Horror tm to both Cram and Roger for their new groups, and the resulting email cheesy buildup in my email inbox.  In the few mintues I give Facebook daily, these are good for a chuckle, but I see them more as augmenting and drawing a different sort of crowd into the fold.

Those who by nature or mood want bite sized 4chan style blurbs, comment flame wars, and lack the attention span or coherence for longer posts will be happy there.  Prime meme - bomb breeding ground.  Free fire Pun zone.

Longer back and forth disucssions, writing, Intermittens assembly, etc, you can't replace this joint.  If anything I see it giving an outlet the silly one-off comments that are off and on bitched about.

If you're disappointed, I wonder what you were expecting?

Even cool people, when dumped into a medium where everybody is gnashing and is only posting short pithy messages, sound like turds. This is not because those people are turds, it's because they're communicating over a stupid medium. I mean, it's not like the PD.com people in the facebook group are acting awesome either (with a few exceptions).

I'm trying to view it pragmatically:

I'm not let down that the group isn't instantly posting absurdist shakespeare. I'm actually pretty excited that 50+ self-identified Discordians who are NOT PD forumites are now exposed to stuff like the Et Cetera, the Apple Talk Dialogues, Intermittens, & Postergasm. It's a fresh audience.

I, for one, view them as camouflage.  They're all noise and no signal, and they make Discordianism look fucking ridiculous, like a pack of autistic kids playing house.

This is a GOOD thing for those of us who are up to no good, as it makes us look harmless.  It also produces a very large pool of scapegoats.

I will be leaving the group tonight, though, for two reasons.

1.  I can't get rid of the chat window, and

2.  Even with my settings changed, I'm getting a couple of hundred emails a day, linking me to silly shit.

I'll just stay here and write "absurdist Shakespeare".

But for the love of "Bob", PLEASE don't invite them here.  I invited one guy, before I realized what an idiot he is.  Just leave them out on Facebook, where they accomplish their purpose.

But for the love of "Bob", PLEASE don't invite them here.  I invited one guy, before I realized what an idiot he is.  Just leave them out on Facebook, where they accomplish their purpose.

The one you started seems okay, at least I am putting some stuff there.

I'm pretty sure he means the Discordian one. Roger's group is cool. Though, certain people are begging to be smacked....

But I am digging the fuck out of people's reactions. Especially when they're first furious, and THEN decide it's hysterical and add all their friends.

I think our signal to noise ratio is a little bit higher than that, but that's not really the point anyway

Yeah, that was mad cool. I sent him four things he could use or not. It's cool for me cos i try to circulate my shit a lot and feel a lot better about spamming up FB than you guys.

Yes.
I was seeing if I could trick Facebook into adding Mark Zuckerberg by changing the header data while it was adding Fark.
Unsurprisingly, I can't... but then it suggested hundreds of friends for him, so I'm recruiting.

All "who the hell is this?" requests are being met with very serious "I trust you enough to admin this group" replies.
Most of them seem honoured and no longer need to make sure that they know who I am.

Apparently I'm so skilled an infiltrator to the group I decided to mass-add, that now I don't have to do anything because they're adding me instead. 30+ mutual friends = no questions asked.

Also, I'm surprised that the combination of enraged "LET ME OUT OF THIS GROUP" members and admin powers for all hasn't resulted in Facebook terrorists mass-banning our members. It'll happen, though.

GREG DANIELS IS...

Co-Founder of http://www.OneWebsitePlease.com/ a start-up website that is in the business of designing websites for free.

Greg Daniels likes long walks on the beach, championship bear wrestling and the cheese left over on the wax paper at burger joints.

Greg Daniels likes most vegetables with the exception of squash and mushrooms.

Greg Daniels is also a producer for the US version of The Office and King of the Hill and a new show called Parks and Recreations.

After reviewing the cornucopia of emails regarding this group, Greg Daniels decided to spend about 2 hours this morning removing over 2500 admins from this group that Greg Daniels was forced to join over the weekend.

Greg Daniels is keeping the group.

Greg Daniels is from Pennsylvania, California, Florida, the U.K., Missouri, Mississippi, and Lousiana and has 8 professions.

Greg Daniels acknowledges that Frank 'Felix' Salomon was the original owner creator of this group and responsible for all of the emails from this group.

Quote from: FacebookI have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Facebook group, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of the Farmville Mod Development Team.-every member of them.

That is the will of Eris and The People. The Trolls and the Trolled, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of internets and many old and famous groups have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Greg Daniels and all the odious apparatus of OneWebsitePlease.com rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on Facebook, we shall fight on the forums and chatrooms, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in your inbox, we shall defend our annoying group, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on your wall, we shall fight on the comments in your photo albums, we shall fight in the "people in this photograph" and in our tweets, we shall fight in the apps; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this group or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the Facebook, armed and guarded by obscurity and terrible smells, would carry on the struggle, until, in Goddess' good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

This shall be part of a twofold assault. One, to add this email address to every mailing list on the planet in order to encourage people to abandon that group. Two, two drop ourselves from that group and diminish its numbers. Three, to spread the Holy Word of the new group and continue adminning every member.

Greg Daniels was a FB shill, and we must be alert for other FB shills for the purposes of mockery and general denigration, but we cannot allow that to hold us back from adminning EACH AND EVERY NEW MEMBER OF THE GROUP. For in equal administration lies equal power; the power to make everyone else an admin.

The funny thing is that it isn't even trolling, if you start a group for one of your interests and want to add your friends. Since you can't invite them, you have to add them. It's just the way it's set up. It's a really bad move on Facebook's part. I think they think people will just get used to it, but unless they change the default email settings to not flood your inbox, people are going to keep getting pissed.

This is getting really old.

I was gone all weekend and came back to more groups and literally thousands of emails because I can't magically change my settings using astral projection.

Now I've had to stop accepting friend requests. I am only friends with people I know IRL and PD spags that I might as well know IRL. Now people are trying to friend me that have 10 of you as mutual friends but they don't even know what PD is. I don't want to be friends with them. And I have no way of knowing who's a legit spag and who's just some asstard that friends everyone they come across.

I mean, great job and all directing the world's attention to such a serious and pressing problem though.

Best reason I've had all year for ditching FB once Diaspora is up and running.

I managed to cull the Name Change Notifications (but they certainly buried that option).

1. Log in to FB

2. Click on Account > Account Settings

3. Click on the Notifications tab

4. Scroll down to Groups and Uncheck whatever you don't want

5. You're Welcome

Um, so if the privacy settings in FB are failing, why don't you just filter all the stuff on your email's side? Most of my incoming emails are automatically sorted into folders and the social network stuff is even marked "read". Every email client and every webmail site can do this. If you got GMail it's a matter of clicking "filter messages like these" and selecting what it should do with emails whose sender addresses match "facebook.com". You can even tell it to trash them, if you don't want any Facebook emails ever at all (but then why give them your main email in the first place).

The first checkbox I have under the "Groups" heading is "Changes the name of one of your groups".

EDIT: OH, you mean the 'Notifications' that popup while logged into face book. Yeah, it doesn't change that, so your "Notification' page is still all spammed up.

When they changed groups they turned group notifications on.

Account>Account settings>Notifications

Scroll down to "groups". The first item listed under "groups" is "changes the name of one of your groups". Uncheck it.

I'll start by saying I read your article but I didn't want to post this there for fear derailing the thread and turning it into another flame fest, losing the point of the article and focus of the thread utterly...

... in response to the quote...

I suppose, but I'm not the kinda guy who wants to blend in, be weird or even fuck with the machine.  The machine fucks with itself.  The machine will continue regardless of how it is fucked with(assuming your talking about the machine as proposed in some of the old threads).

Instead I take a more pragmattic view by asking:  What is it that I want to achieve?  How can I get there?

By taking responsibility for my existence and not blaming it on someone else, god or even the holy fucking machine (tm) I find I have more time to achieve what I set out to do.

And that's not advice, that's just what work for me.

I don't pretend to know what works for you, or anyone else, as I recognize that everyone is best qualified to find the solutions themselves and if they really want advice (from me or anyone) then they'll ask for it.

In this respect I post my thoughts and opinions not to say that what I think is right and everyone should follow my way, but to say it's what I think and hopefully meet a few people that jived with that.

Currently I'm reassessing how much effort I should bother with doing so because although I have yet to be rattled by anyone's remarks, I'm just starting to think is a bad investment of time to attempt to communicate here if people are going to close off from it and read what they want to versus what I'm posting.

(That's just how it looks to me, which seems supremely hippocritical.  Not that I mind)

That's my pragmattic side speaking.  I still hope eventually people will just lay off and accept me for who I say I am, trade some information, mutually inspire and have a few laughs, but if not, oh well, fuck it.

Take a minuete, breathe deep and realize I'm not here to attack anyone's bullshit that they wrap themselves in.

I mean that in the kindest possible way.
All I needed to know.  :whack:

Apparently because I don't have a bajillion friends I am some joke. Never mind the fact that I added 14 people to the group, and those were exclusively PD spags. Never mind that you can ONLY add friends. Never mind the fact that someone else said the thing about re-adding people. I'm counting this as a victory!  :lulz:
