Title: Big Blue crane accident, 1999

The two big bangs you hear before the collapse are the keeper rings around the pivot shaft shattering (they were 6' wide steel).

This is what happens when you lift at the crane's max capacity in windy conditions.  The original operator had made them wait 2 days due to wind...They lost their patience, fired him, and had some yahoo step in to run it.  Joe Hero makes 9 lifts, and on the tenth one, things go a teeny bit wrong.

The cost of one accident, even a non - lethal one, makes delays seem cheap.  This never quite sinks in until AFTER the accident though.

So they fired a guy, not for doing something stupid but, for refusing to do something stupid?
