Yes, he's Ferka whassisname. Zarco.
He bailed on us last year because we didn't measure up, then came back under a new moniker.
Oh.
Anyways, Yahoo reported that the details were "still shaky".
I shit you not.

RWHN! :argh!:
Damnit, they changed the headline. I guess people bitched. It's still in the report, however.
QuotePolice said there were reports of multiple fatalities, but Prime Minister John Key told Parliament details were still too shaky for those reports to be confirmed.
Multiple fatalities confirmed, city centre looks like London during the blitz with people trapped in toppled buildings. Have a mate who's living there who I'm worried about but the cell lines are clogged with calls and no info from his brother.
They haven't exactly finished cleaning up since November...

That's one of the reasons why there is so much damage. Alot of buildings that were shaken in November were seriously weakened, especially the historical buildings i.e Christchurch Cathedral. But this one was alot worse even though it was a lesser magnitude quake (6.3 magnitude) due to the location of the epicentre (10km from city centre, 5km below the surface).
Go to http://www.tv3.co.nz/ (http://www.tv3.co.nz/) if you're interested in the live news feed
And my mom managed to be on the airplane from Christchurch to Wellington a mere 2 hours before the earthquake happened. :jebus:

Yeah, this.
Also, Christchurch is seriously fucked up this time. The earthquake was 5km down (ETA, oh Void already said this), so hit harder than all the previous ones. The top fell off the cathedral, while people were in it to inspect the damage from the last quakes. Some of the large buildings in the CBD entirely pancaked, flattening everything. Buildings too close to cliffs were crushed by boulders larger than the structures themselves and the area where the quake was centered is entirely uninhabitable. 65 confirmed fatalities and they haven't started picking up some of the buildings.
111 Emergency line is down, but you only find that out if you have access to the news. The entire country is supposed to avoid making phone-calls, because the Telecom network has been damaged and if we ring people, we'll break it for the ones who need it.

There have been a few reports of the Prime Minister saying details were shaky, but most of them say that what he actually said was "details are too sketchy". Regardless, there has been rage at Key, so I'm not going to bother correcting anyone who wants to bitch at him.
Yes, but are YOU okay (obviously alive, but you never know)? I'm not sure where you live on the islands.

Yeah, I'm on the other island at the moment. :)
A national state of emergency has been declared as the latest aftershock threatens to bring down the 26-storey Hotel Grand Chancellor building. In the last 10 minutes it has moved about a metre horizontally and is now on a lean to the east. Is one of the tallest buildings in the city and the floors have already started collapsing.
Jesus, you poor bastards never did finish recovering from the blitz, and now this.

Jesus christ.
 Carefully concealed grow-room in the attic, and an earthquake comes along and tells your neighbours.
I see the lunatic fringe didn't waste much time...

and http://www.scribd.com/doc/49354091 (http://www.scribd.com/doc/49354091) from a senior minister of another bunch of whackos.
Now I think I'll go puke a little.
Ah, yes, the inevitable, "somebody in the city was doing something WE don't think they should be doing, so God smacked EVERYBODY down for it" wailing.
People make me sick, sometimes.
My mom and I were just talking about taking a trip to NZ eventually too.
Seems a lot of people are helping out by shouting on Facebook about the best way to torture looters or how the government should use the state of emergency to execute undesirables and force every major company to fund relief efforts.
"SAY NO TO FAIR TRIALS" is a popular response to "police have arrested looters."
