You might just have a career ahead of you in songwriting.

That is a hell of a lot of autotune artifacts.

Can't they find a girl who can sing at least a little on key?

I was up all damned night because li'l Alty kept waking up crying. He rolls bumps into the sides of his bed and starts crying about every two hour and I'm not sure of what to do.  I already have insomnia so losing sleep that I manage to steal from this life fills me to the gills with RAGE and HATE and SEVERE CRANKYNESS. When I have a hard time sleeping, tossing and turning, music tends to pound throughout my skull in an unpleasant way.

Oh come on guys.  Her mom paied ARK MEDIA $2k for her daughter to record two songs and two vidoes.  She's not signed, she had no intention of marketing these things, it hit the web and went viral.  Of course it sucks.  She's not a singer, and was handed to a couple of cut-throat producers who didn't give a fuck about her and just turned the auto-tune up to 11 over a generic pop song for the cash.

If you're gonna throw a shitfit over an over-privileged 13-year-old's vanity project, you may want to consider valium for a few weeks.

LMNO's motorcycle is correct. This video is virally popular because of how terrible it is. I believe some /b/-tards are declaring her the new Queen of /b/ (a title held by such luminaries as Boxxy, for example).

It's an unintentional troll, and a brilliant one at that. It straddles the line between "genuinely that banal and awful" and "this is a joke, right?" pretty perfectly.

That said, I still hate it.

Agreed. The dude who wrote the song has apparently stepped up because he felt bad that Miss Black was getting so much negative attention for something that he created. I also heard that he asked the family if he should take the video down and they said 'No! Leave it!' From this, I gather that both parties know exactly what they're doing.

Obviously, the song is terrible. I don't think there's any dispute there. Mrs Mang told me about it first and I went and checked it out. Went something like this:

Mrs Mang: Did you play that Rebecca Black song yet?
Me: Yeah. It's bad. But is it any worse than the last few singles put out by the Black Eyed Peas?
Mrs Mang: Good point.

I think this shitty Friday song is actually a symptom and not a cause. It exists because there's a culture to support it. A culture of over privileged 'tweens' with expendable income willing to invest in an adult fantasies. This is the musical equivalent of child beauty pageants. Ick.

Obituary? She has to first go through the Teen Sensation ---> "You're supposed to be a role model" ----> Rehab --> Comeback cycle first.
Then she gets to die.

I'm just wondering when this whole auto-tune thing is going to die.  I remember back in the 80s when artists got shit for lip-syncing at performances instead of playing live.  Now, every other pop star-let has their vocal chords digitally enhanced.  I mean, fuck, if we are going to have robotic singing can't we at least have real robots doing the singing?

Does not approve of your incorrect usage of autotune.

It won't.  Just like doubling the lead vocal was once a revolutionary technique when multi-tracking came out, just like using computerized beats was once sacrilige, just like click tracks and non-linear editing was cheating, all are considered mainstays and pillars of pop music these days.

The hard tune (i.e. "obvious") function may die down, but now that we have the ability to autotune, it will never go away.

Eli August said to me yesterday that while he was at an event this past weekend, he made $50 off of his CDs and shirts over the course of 3 days.

...The guy who said he would staple his dick to his thigh for $50 made that in 30 secs after saying he would do it.

Music is dead. Long live the music.

So the Japanese have the technology to create a virtual 3D popstar with a live backing band and yet they lack the skill to wave their glow sticks in time.

Even drunk people waving lighters and yelling 'FREEEEBIRRRRDDDD' have more co-ordination.

Weird.

The hard tune (i.e. "obvious") function may die down, but now that we have the ability to autotune, it will never go away.

i thought sort of it went the other way around, in a way:

producers already used autotune for ages, in order to tune up the popstars that couldn't actually sing (britney spears, madonna--probably not the earlier madonna, but definitely from Ray of Light and onward). but they did it very carefully at first so it was barely noticeable, plus the popstars actually tried to sing in tune, so not much correction was needed.

then came Cher with "Believe (in life after love)" [december 1998], in which the producer used autotune in a very obvious manner, for effect (and he only used it in two or three syllables). the success of that track spawned a huge number of somewhat less subtly used autotune effects, together with the "filterhouse" genre, Cassius and Daft Punk.

after that, the autotune died down a littlebit, actual vocoders gained a bit of ground with more Daft Punk releases and a revival of electro/electro-clash by Anthony Rother and Dave Clarke (in europe, at least) (this is still a couple of years ago).

and then at some point, the autotuner came back with a fucking vengeance. I'm not exactly sure with which song it was, might have been Snoop Dogg - Sensual Seduction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1PVmANeyAg) [2008], cause I remember explaining some girl about vocoders and how fucking awesome they are, and a while later she messaged me with this title, asked me "like this?" and I remember thinking "hey yeah, that's pretty cool", which was about the last time I thought autotuners were kinda cool and awesome as vocoders are, because shortly after that they EXPLODED ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE and became really really trite and over-used.

a while after that people on youtube started autotuning politicians and carl sagan, and also being used in non electronic music such as rock groups, and it's all going downhill from there.

Vocal effects can be cool, but I think the overabundant use in the industry is triggered by the fact that it's easier to find someone who can act the right way, and fuck the singing, just autotune it, right?  The music's mostly shit anyway right.  Though in the end, I tend to agree that's it's obviously weirdly subjective and as someone said in another post, noise or noise and rhythm.

I'm still of the opinion that vocoders (as opposed to autotuners) are AWESOME ALWAYS.

And that no amount of over-use can EVER spoil them, EVER.

I DARE the gods of the music industry to try and make the vocoder into a trite and over used effect, DO IT!! DO IT NOW! :fap:

What I want to know is when the damned loudness wars are going to end.  There's a lot of theoretically really good music out there right now that I simply can't listen to because its constantly peaked and I can't deal with the ear fatigue for even one song, and ear fatigue aside, it's just flat out not as good as if they'd go back to old mixing practices (hell the entire reason vinyl got a reputation as being better sound quality than CDs is that you can't do the loudness wars on vinyl).

Also agree with Requia here, artificial loudness is absurd and bad.  If I like it, I'll turn it up myself thanks.

That's an autotuner, not a vocoder.

Autotuner is when you pitch-bend a human's voice so that it is in tune with the music, and applying it "too much" makes for the effect that is being (ab)used in contemporary pop music. Also see my story two posts back ITT.

A vocoder is a different effect. It electronically separates the human voice into the plain buzzing sound of the vocal cords, and the way it is altered (filtered) by the vocal tract, throat and mouth. Then it replaces the buzzing sound with a synthesizer buzz* and alters (filters) it in the same way as the vocal tract/throat/mouth would have. The result is a robot-like voice, because it removes (replaces) all of the intonation. But it still sounds very much like a voice and is reasonably clear to understand because the most important parts of forming syllables and words are done with the filtering in the vocal tract/throat/mouth and not so much the vocal cords.

This is a typical vocoder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeXTZOSWIUU (ja tvoi sluga, ja tvoi robotnik!!)

This is a also vocoder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmoFNya6P4Q

Vocoders are similar to autotuners in that they also allow to control the pitch perfectly in tune, but in the case of vocoders, that's just because the pitch is determined by the synthesizer buzz, so it's always accurate. It still removes all the intonation of the voice, though.

*any harmonically rich sound will do, actually. Near the end of Daft Punk's harder better faster stronger they use an electric guitar, for instance.
