QuoteWithin weeks and possibly days, President Obama is likely to sign into law a bill that will bring unmanned aerial vehicles - drones - into US general airspace, crisscrossing the country in company with passenger planes and other human-carrying aircraft.
"We're already flying UAVs in airspace all over the world. Now we need to open the skies for them at home to make our nation more secure, our communities safer and our economy more dynamic, creating jobs and opportunities in our country. If we don't you can be sure other nations will."

Whaaaaat
This can't possibly be a good idea.
I know a group of ultra-conservative christians that are working on building huts in a western mountain range that are designed to not be detectable by drones.
I don't like the idea of unmanned drones flyin over my lawn.. but I dislike it in an apathetic "that's fucked up... oh look they're shiny!" kind of way.
Edited to fix a typo.
I'm having trouble seeing how much good this will really accomplish. Can someone help me and play devil's advocate?
I get a mental picture of oprahbees.gif, only with Obama and robots.
Somebody make that.

What it will do is put a lot of money in the pockets of the people who make these things.
Britain has been using them for a while. I guess Obama felt left out.

It's just one more little thing on an ever-lengthening list of privacy. You never know when the eye of the state is on you (not that you didn't before, but nevertheless).
Gahh!

i'm ashamed of the company i work for (it's on the list of contributors lobbying for this shit according to the article.) i need a new job.
The real question is what the punishment for shooting them down is going to be.

GIT OFF MAH LAWN's airspace.
Y'all laugh but it is a valid question. It is your property, do you not own the airspace above it? I mean you own the mineral/water rights below it.

Wasn't there something last year about a guy getting arrested for removing a government tracker from his car?
Seems to me like the government must have some way to get you should one of their precious drones get shot out of the sky.

He wasnt arrested but they came and got their tracker back.
That was also the case in which it was decided that the fourth amendment ends at your front door. They illegally broke in to his car and planted it while it was in his driveway. He also did nothing wrong aside from being the son of a Muslim preacher(there was litterally no other reason to follow him).
Im beginning to think that the hunt for terrorism is becoming a lot more like the hunt for communists. Your boss thinks that godless terrorists are waiting behind every corner and youd better find them behind every corner or else your ass is fired. Just like the Christmas tree bombing, the kid they set up wrote an article for the PHYSICAL FITNESS section of an obscure internet Jihad magazine.
I definitely agree. You take the shit my (Tea Bagger) parents say and replace "Muslim" with "commie" and you have Cold War rhetoric all over again.

This scares me more than anything else in this thread so far. I mean it's not like they would take my crack dealing/doing neighbors seriously right? Because god forbid one of those fuckers go off on a tangent and decide the crazy white bitch is in fact a crazy terrorist. And even worse that some idiot from homeland security take them seriously. :?

Armed drones will be first introduced in the "Border Zone":

And then be pulled into high-violence gang areas.

Youre missing my point.
My point was that the search for terrorists in the US is a Snipe hunt. Much like the red scare was.
Im sure if you look close enough you will find a few(just like Im sure there were a few Commie spies) but its not this massive problem that requires tons of manhours and resources to combat.

It's all based on the basic in-group out-group dynamic, but there's more similarities in this particular case. Tea-baggers and Al-queda both love guns, hate gays, feel women should be barefoot and pregnant, feel their opinions are divinely inspired, and tend to have similar views on the US financial industry.
RE Glittersnatch
Ah, thank you for clarifying, and I agree, it's a distraction.
No, it's designed to create more terrorists. Donatella della Porta's "radicalisation of protest" model of terrorist formation is pretty well known, including by the people who are ordering this.
The maintenance of public paranoia allows for the state to deploy counter-terrorist forces against percieved opposition to state power. It legitimizes the use of force and future escalation in recruitment and deployment of those forces. It signals clearly than threats to state power will be dealt with militarily.
Along with, for example, American Muslims, as a very small minority with almost no political power in the USA (especially since the Republicans took up Islamophobia as a hobby) being declared "fair game" by much of the opinion media, you have the perfect conditions for creating home grown terrorism. No real voice in the media, constantly demonized by propaganda, no real political power, subject to constant humiliation and surveillance by state intelligence....oh yeah. That's going to end well. Which is precisely the point.
I think you guys are a bunch of ungrateful bastards.
