Title: Tennessee Will Ignore The Gays (And arrest Muslims) Until They Go AWAY!
Post by: Cardinal Pizza Deliverance. on April 25, 2011, 11:50:06 PM
I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, feel free to delete/move/merge if it has. My girlfriend brought this to my attention. I giggled like a loon. So naturally I wanted to share.

http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/568620/tn_senate_oks_bill_that_would_make_it_illegal_to_mention_the_existence_of_gay_people_to_students/ (http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/568620/tn_senate_oks_bill_that_would_make_it_illegal_to_mention_the_existence_of_gay_people_to_students/)

QuoteThe Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee has approved one lawmaker's revolutionary plan to fight the "homosexual agenda": don't tell students gay people exist until they get to high school.

So what happens to a kid who talks about his two daddies during Bring-A-Parent-To-School day?

Are bi-sexuals also on the pretend-they-aren't-real list or will they be referred to as creatures of myth and legend?

QuoteWhat's even more sad is that opposition to the bill in the state Senate focused not on the legislation being damaging, hateful, and downright stupid, but rather on the fact that the bill might be redundant:

Well we can't have redundant legislature. I mean, it's never happened before so we shouldn't start that trend now.

QuoteTracy proposed an amendment to rewrite Campfield's bill to require the Board of Education to study the issue and determine whether any teaching about homosexuality is occurring and, if so, recommend what should be done about it.

So basically they want a study that will determine if "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" should be instituted in the elementary/middle school classroom.

Hehehehe. Hehehe. Hehe. He. Ha!

It's really just the logical extension of conservatives ignoring the fact that THEY'RE gay until they're caught doing meth with gay hookers.

Many young kids say "that's gay" for anything "that sucks."

If this bill works, hopefully the chil'ren wont know the existence of homosexuality until they're old enough to handle such a disturbing concept and firmly rooted in Jesus

Because we all know the point of schools is to prevent children from knowing things.

Judging by test scores I think were doing a damn good job.

This is hypocritical because when I was in elementary school I learned about things like the Holocaust and the Black Plague. Human beings being turned in to soap is ok but men kissing other men will warp children for life.

A fair amount of those people that got turned into soap were gay too.

Although that's a bit of a strawman, since they are still teaching about homosexuals at a highschool level and you don't get holocaust until highschool either.

By teachers, definitely, but that's probably not really allowed anyway. I don't think this makes it illegal for a student to talk about homosexuality.

Bill text for those interested:

http://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/107/Bill/SB0049.pdf

Quote
-1-
SENATE BILL 49
By Campfield
AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49,
Chapter 6, Part 10, relative to education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-1005, is amended by adding
the following as new subsection (c) and by relettering the existing subsection (c) accordingly:
(c)
(1) The general assembly recognizes the sensitivity of particular subjects
that are best explained and discussed in the home. Human sexuality is a
complex subject with societal, scientific, psychological, and historical
implications; those implications are best understood by children with sufficient
maturity to grasp their complexity.
(2) Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, no public elementary or
middle school shall provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual
orientation other than heterosexuality.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring
it.

So, won't stop anti-gay bullying.

I know this was just a snarky comment, and i'm not trying to turn it into a troll, but....
since the general consensus in society (and this board) is that public education is a very good thing, despite its current shortcomings, and that establishing it via policy seems to make it susceptible to shenanigans such as this... what is the best way to insulate the educational curriculum from political gesturing?  (i'm taking as read that this bill is put forward only as such)
is there a way to provide public education without the spectre of politics tainting it?

I love the opening line.

QuoteThe threat from terrorism continues to plague the United States
generally and Tennessee in particular.

Bolding mine.

Damn those pesky Muslims for hating the Home of Country Music. O.o Every time a country singer gets booed off stage it's terrorism.

QuoteThis part neither targets, nor incidentally prohibits or inhibits, the peaceful practice of any religion, and in particular, the practice of Islam by its adherents. Rather, this part criminalizes only the knowing provision of material support or resources, as defined in § 39-13-803, to designated sharia organizations, as defined in § 39-13-904, or to known sharia-jihad organizations with the intent of furthering their criminal behavior.

Oh, well. That's a huge relief. O.o

I don't actually remember being instructed as to what homosexuality was in school. The topic may have come up in health, but, come on? Kids will probably learn about the existence of homosexuality pretty early on just by being in the world. It's not like Thomas Jefferson- you can't just leave homosexuality out of education with nobody being any the wiser.

I grew up in TN. Yeah yeah it explains a lot. I don't remember how old I was when I found out what homosexual meant but I do know it was never discussed in any class I had in TN or later in High School in NC.

I think it needs to be a part of any sex ed class.  While you don't necessarily need graphic details, protection and the basics need to be covered.

And that is just another reason they took my southern belle crown. I'm not backasswards enough!!!

I was in TN for most of elementary / middle school.  I didn't find out about homosexuality until high school (when I moved to Ohio.)

You didn't watch Three's Company or any sitcoms on TV in the 80's/90's?

I mean, do TNns outlaw programming like Glee or some shit?

About 95% of the television I watched in that age range was Bill Nye the Science Guy, The Magic School Bus, and Pokemon.  For the longest time, my understanding of sex was "what you to do to fertilize the ovum so it can develop into a baby."  I was just completely unaware of the social / psychological factors surrounding sex.

Funny how society hides that from us, and then clubs us over the head with it later.  :fnord:

I came home from my first day of kindergarten and asked my mom what 69 was because the big kids on the bus were talking about it. The next day I asked what a 'cock sucker' was and why anyone would want to suck on a chicken. It went down hill from there. The kids were calling each other faggots and butt pirates with all manner of gesticulation and miming to accompany their words. With that kind of help, who doesn't figure it out?

This was passed on the 21st. I'm a little behind on all of this, apparently. But it gets funnier.

QuoteAs introduced, the bill would have put into law a declaration that it is illegal to discuss any sexual behavior other than heterosexuality prior to the ninth grade.

Okay. What the fuck ever. 9th graders are teenagers. By then you can't tell those kids a god damn thing about sex because they've got the internet, TV, slutty friends/older relatives/both, and porn. They've got it all figured out.

QuoteBut when it came before the Senate Education Committee, Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, contended current law already prohibits such instruction by deeming it a misdemeanor to teach any sex education that is not part of the "family life curriculum" adopted by the state Board of Education.

D'oh. A misdemeanor to counsel a gay kid in school. A misdemeanor to answer questions about 'alternatives'.

QuoteTracy proposed an amendment to rewrite Campfield's bill to require the Board of Education to study the issue and determine whether any teaching about homosexuality is occurring and, if so, recommend what should be done about it.

An amendment to do a study to write a report to discuss the options and develop a plan of action, to be presented and voted upon, ad nauseum.

QuoteThe Tracy amendment passed over Campfield's objections.

But then Sen. Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown, proposed to change the Tracy amendment. The revision declares that, after its study to be completed by Feb. 1 of next year, the Board of Education "shall adopt" - as part of the family life curriculum - a ban on discussion of homosexuality in the same language used in Campfield's bill.

So they have until February 1st to 'look into' the issue. Then kaput! The way this is worded, it doesn't look like it matters one way or the other what the results of the study are.

QuoteThat amendment was adopted, too, and the revised bill was then approved 6-3 and sent to the Senate floor. All no votes came from Democrats.

Of course.

And then all was quiet in Tennessee for about an hour.

BUT THEN!

QuoteCampfield has been criticized on some blogs this week for seeking a $1,000 "retainer" fee to debate the "don't say gay" bill with Del Shores, a Texas-based movie producer and director who has made films on homosexuality.

LULZ ensued.

I can't say I'm fond of calling gayness an "alternative".

It is what it is.

Does this mean that teachers can't make references to Tim Gunn, Glee, Harvey Milk, Oscar Wilde, or Andrew Shepard, et al?

My guess is references but no in-depth discussions. And there goes half of "current events" class. :P Maybe they'll just stick to veiled innuendos.

Can't teach about homosexuality IN SEX ED.

As I read it, teaching about it as current events, such as, say, Prop 8, would be okay, since it doesn't involve teaching the kids how the naughty bits interact.

But, I could be wrong.

Hmmm. I guess it comes down to how they choose to define "family life curriculum". You're probably closer to the mark than I am, Luna.
