Yeah, see if you can't get a picture of this insect:

Eubasilissa regina
, the worlds largest caddisfly. Or at least one of them, there are several more in that genus, all of them large.

What I really want is a photo of this with one in a person's palm, with a ruler for scale, because even with the cm bar on the picture above I'm having trouble coming to terms with just how BIG these things are. My masters advisor has seen one live in China before, and he said it looks like a small, dark bird in flight except it flies weird. If my calculations are right, the largest specimens should have right around an 8 cm wingspan (~3 inches, for those of us who don't know metric). This is huge for caddisflies.

I'll take radiation for 500.

Cool, are you going to teach? Also where in Japan?

Actually I think another mate of mine is going over to teach in July, odd.

I'm just going to satisfy my growing nostalgia that comes from talking about Japan five days a week.

I will do some looking into caddisfly haunts.

I lived in Japan for 3 months, here is my advice:

1. Play the "confused foreigner" card wherever and whenever you might get into trouble. It works.
2. Do never eat ramen (instant is okay) or natto.

Rule of Japanese Cuisine, in order of most to least important:
1. Don't ask, just chew.
2. Keep chewing.
3. Try everything at least once.

Just something you may want to watch out for:

That was only 3 weeks ago. It's been suggested that you thoroughly make sure your shoes are clean

Sat beside a Japanese woman called Hiroko for the flight. She was in Australia to look at schools for her kids for a move to Australia, to escape the rigidity of the Japanse schooling system. We talked about aliens, tenri and Japanese whaling. She was open about japan whaling for food, and seemed surprised that the government claimed to be doing research. We took a photo but it was bad and I deleted it. After I left and said goodbye she ran up to me again to show me her family. I said hello and wished them luck for the move. I had a dream where two of my kids asked me to represent them in front of their boss for wage bargaining. I did. He was a mob boss, smoking cigars. He eventually disappeared and send a horrible storm upon us, and i remember yelling "why the f- did you ask me to represent you in front if a guy who can kill you with the weather" At some point in the dream (redacted) was frightened by a man dressed as a vampire.
