I like Judas.  I don't like Edge of Glory.  I'm still not big on Born This Way.  Pretty unenthusiastic about the whole album, actually, so I'm glad I only payed $.99 for it.

I like Judas, but not much of what else I've heard from the new album so far.

on the other hand, she's the only person in history who could put out a crappy pop album after that much hype and have me say things like "well I don't personally dig where she went with this one musically, but I totally respect what she's doing artistically" with a straight face.

On the other other hand, I think working at the gay bar has made it subconsciously impossible for me to actually actively dislike anything she does.

I haven't really listened to "Edge of Glory" enough but I am FUCKING OBSESSED with "Hair".

It's one of those things where the more times I listen the more aware I become of her acute and subtle commentary.

Edge of Glory reminds me of late 80s pop, and that's the approach she took with the video too.

Born This Way is awesome.
I can't stand Edge of Glory, though.

Am I getting that there's a new Lady Gaga album out?

I know who she is, and I've heard her music, but I actively avoid celebrity gossip/who's famous/whatever stuff so I have no idea.

Actively avoiding it is just giving it more power.

You have to be conversationally fluent in pop culture while at the same time totally not actually giving a shit about it.

At first, I was closer to EoC's position.

However, after playing it on endless loop for 72 hours straight, I have come around to the position that, for pop, it's a pretty decent album.  Its not really like The Fame Monster, and that will probably piss a few people off, but on it's own merits it's alright.

LGG is trite, disposable, ovehyped, bubblegum shite. ie. the same as damn near everything else in the fucking pop charts. There I've said it

One thing that shouldn't be overlooked is how much of an impact she's had in "mainstreaming" homosexuality (even though, as far as I know, she herself is straight). And she deserves alot of credit for it because it is an intentional thing on her part. Love her music or hate it, you can't say that it's not really awesome that she's inspiring a whole generation of kids to grow up feeling like it's OK for them to be who they are and still love themselves. And that she's opening a whole lot of older peoples' minds about the subject, or at the very least forcing them to confront their own prejudices.

I mean, show me where Ke$ha or Katy Perry have done anything like that.

Can't deny that. First time I saw her I was convinced she was trolling the music industry but that doesn't get away from the fact that her music sounds like a fucking breakfast cereal commercial. Still, I guess pissing in the mainstream has to sound that way.

I find I like her a whole lot more when I think of her as a prank artist/social activist who is just using pop music as the delivery vehicle.

But you're right, her music taken in its own right ranges from "pretty good sleazy electropop" to "2nd rate Madonna rip-off".

Though, again, I suspect the Madonna rip-offs are intentional. And hilarious.

That's exactly how I see her, too. She seems like a performance artist/activist doing an art project/social experiment. I think she's completely self-aware and most of what she does career-wise is calculated to advance her own agenda.

I wonder if there are any cults who think Lady Gaga is the Antichrist yet.

Apart from Born This Way (which is absolutely fabulous), I don't like her music at all either. I see her as a memetic engineer reprogramming the machine from the inside. I respect her for that.

I admit I fucking love Telephone.

And Poker Face.

And Born this Way.

And I agree, it's performance art for her. She knows exactly what she's doing, and if it sounds like a parody or commentary, it probably is.
