Title: Would you pony up a few bucks for.....?
Post by: Telarus on July 21, 2011, 05:16:03 AM
Hey spags.

Twid has tracked down an ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the Dialogo della Discordia text by Sperone Speroni.

Costs to acquire a copy would run a little over $50 USD and would take about a month to prep and ship.

I figure we can keep the original copy hosted on the Wiki, but then prepare another version for "public consumption" in the line of the Chao te Ching project or Richter's Greeks Myff'd. Something with fly-quotes and graphics, or something.

A SPECIAL EDITION INTERMITTENS -= from the 16th century=- ...if you will.

It has been voiced that Twid, nor Phox, nor I can spare $50+ up front.

So here's the deal. I'm seeding $10, and this is a Fucking RANSOM.

:fnord: Pony up the cash or this historic Discordian literature goes the way of American Idol (flash and forgotten), and you'll never get to read it.  :fnord:

(ok, more srsly, anybody up to pitch in on this?  :D )

Nice! I'll throw in about 10. I'm not sure how to deal with online money. It might be easier if someone who has a paypal or whatever to coordinate with me, and I'll put in my 10 with my card, or something.

Right, I can co-ordinate a paypal pool or something.

Subject: Inquiry on a book from the Renaissance

Dear Sir or Madam,

I was wondering how possible it would be to email me a PDF copy of a
section from a book from the Renaissance- I Dialogi di Messer Speron
Sperone OCLC number 504167902. I'm particularly interested in the
section titled "Dialogo della Discordia" or, "On Discord." I'm finding
it particularly difficult to find an English translation of it, and
worldcat.org seems to indicate that you're the only library with an
English translation. Unfortunately, I live in Boston, MA as opposed to
Boston Spa, so a walk in is out of the question in the near future. I
would appreciate any help you could give me in this regard.

Best,
[Twid]

Thanks man. I should be able to send out PMs with paypal info tomorrow.. I think that'll work.

Hmm, looks like it's £26.50 (lowest res scans) + £3.45 shipping (reg. mail) = £29.95 -> $48.43

So with myself, Twid, Coyote, Phox, & Hover Cat that should be enough.

More 2morrow...

My brain is funked right now but, how much would it be to get a high res scan? Low res scans of manuscripts can suck balls, especially if it a hand written one.

Could someone explain to me what this is (sparing no detail)? I did I quick search and couldn't find any info on the particular peice mentioned in the OP.

It's a piece, using the goddess Discordia as a character, explaining why strife is necessary, written by an Italian bloke 400 years ago.

It really sounds awesome. I was able to find refferences to some of his other works, but nothing about the one in question here. Why is that?

Because it's a lesser known work, and as far as I can tell only appears in print as part of a collection of his works.

Interestingly enough, I have a professional interest in this author, as he wrote a commentary on the Aeneid, and the Aeneid is going to figure in prominently to my next topic of research....

Ok guys and gals, still working on figuring out the paypal dealie. Today got eaten by having to pick up our son from school early, and the girl having 5 hrs of sleep over the past 2 days.

Twid, since I'm collecting the funds, do you mind if I pay and get it shipped here? I could definitely use your help formatting the order request.

Everyone who contributes will have direct access to the files when I get them uploaded, and then we can open access up to everyone interested. The Library does hold copywrite on the IMAGES OF THE PAGES, but not on the content. So I'm figuring that I'll be running some OCR text-recognition on it and uploading it in that form.

Coyote, we can get higher res images but it's damn expensive to do so. Good point to keep in mind tho.

Yeah definitely have it sent to your place im cool with that.

Also i dont mind it being known that my name is kevin. I just blanked out my email and the other part becuase they had my last name in them.

That said in retrospect i realize that my last name can easily be found out through the anarchangel page on facebook. Meh.

I will totally chip in! I also want an opportunity to poke at the manuscript and put in some 21st century prophecies. For example, the discovery of the planet Eris as a signal that Eris is ready to return.  :lulz:

Hmm, probably not at that level yet. KS takes 5% off the top _and_ lets Amazon take payment fees.

I do have a Paypal account I've received $ at before, poking around now. Ok, so I have to send each of you and email to "request money", so PM me a good email address and we can get this rolling.

I'll edit a list of fellow Ransom-ees into the first post, so we can keep track.

That's 10+ spags, so yup, we have achieved the magic ~$5/share. Sweet. I'll keep Kai or others(if they shows interest) in mind if I can't confirm with the above spags. And then we'll start crossing off the list once the donations hit my paypal.

[Edit: I will still be throwing in up to $10 if necessary to cover any shortage due to paypal fees]

Cool. With HoverCat, and after paypal fees, we are @ $19.10. I'm going to wait to see how much of the fees I need to make up for, but it probably won't be but a couple of bucks.

So, if any of you spags reading this have paypal, you can send a donation directly to me -> telarus[at]gmail[dot]com
