Title: East Coast Earthquake
Post by: Suu on August 23, 2011, 09:12:17 PM
Yes, we felt it in Providence. Oarstroker and I were very much WTF as we sat in the kitchen and felt the floor rolling. Yes, rolling.

Is everyone else okay in the Northeast?

Didn't feel a thing. But that's not out of the ordinary.

I was driving at the time. I have no idea if I felt it or not.

Okay, granted we were stoned, but I'm also on the 3rd floor of an old building. Seriously, my kitchen floor had the wah wah wah wahs.

Yeah, that would be freaky. Glad it held together.

http://www2.turnto10.com/news/2011/aug/23/6/state-house-evacuated-after-va-quake-ar-701063/

Some people REALLY felt it. Structures aren't built for quakes up here, so old buildings like mine are rattletraps.

However, it was QUIET. The floor moved us in our chairs and we were watching things swaying in my kitchen. Oarstroker was like, "Wait, are we having an earthquake?!" I acknowledged that it was possible up here, and I checked the seizmic websites, but it hadn't been posted yet.  Fucking scary that a shallow 5.8 can send shockwaves that far.

I have colleagues I was working with in RI that felt it, as well as folks in Washington, DC that felt it and had to log out for the day they were so freaked out.

*squints*

Yeah, 5.9 is pretty rough.

Doubly glad I'm out of those VA caverns now.

a 5.9 doesn't happen much in these parts. MA gets 3s and 4s often, but almost a 6 on the East Coast is pretty rare.

Rolling floor is a good description of what I felt.

Not immediately knowing I was experiencing an earth quake I had thought I was just getting kind of nauseous and dizzy.

Thankfully one of my coworkers spoke up about the building moving so I knew it wasn't just me.  Then the fire alarm went off.

rolling floors are about par for that. glad that i havn't heard about any injuries.

granted i am tempted to lol, but i know you don't build for earthquakes out there.

Apparently East coast earthquakes also travel quite a ways father that other (US?) earthquakes.  So damage could potentially be over a much larger area if something really big were ever to hit.

I had an upstairs apartment in MA for awhile and sometimes felt little vibrations. Thought it was just big trucks going by until somebody told me it was earthquakes.

I was in the waiting room of my therapist when it happened.

Therapist didn't feel it.

Previous patient did.

Therapist ran up the stairs to tell the previous patient that it was confirmed by her next patient.  :lulz:

I remember the Quebec earthquake from last year, and it felt the same. Never felt that sort of thing before. I know people describe it as a freight train going by, but, it's not really. Wavy is a good term for it. It also weirds me out. When it was hapening today, I knew it was an earthquake but I almost wanted to think of it as a sinkhole forming. Don't ask me why, because that's obviously worse.

YESTERDAY KICKED ASS

I've never been in an earthquake before. At least-- not one that I noticed in any way.

Yesterday my monitor was shaking for about 2 minutes. Then we EVACUATED THE FUCK OUT OF THE BUILDING.

Then we WENT BACK INSIDE

Then I HID and SHOOK THE WALLS of my coworkers' cubicles. They screamed. I laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. I haven't laughed that hard all month.

THEN THEY SENT US HOME

so my work day ended at like 2:30 yesterday

WEEEE HOWDY

Um...Get buried by floors of debris and falling to your death...

or...

Risk shit falling off of a building?

Fortunately they don't happen that often around here anyway for us to really worry about it, but a 5.9 isn't something to fuck with, well, for Californians maybe, but that's not "mild" last I checked.

On topic, I remember when I was in my first earthquake, it was at 3 or 4 am. and it felt like someone was shaking my bed. I got up and looked around, no one was around, so I went back to sleep. Couple minutes later a very panicked and uninformed individual was yelling at me to get up and go downstairs because there was an earthquake. SO, I was like "Fine..." rolled out of bed, grabbed pillow and blanket, went downstairs and curled up in an empty nook and went back to sleep.

The Weather Channel says the east coast earthquake was caused by an unknown fault-line running under D.C. and through Virginia. It is now being called Obama's Fault, though Obama says it's really Bush's Fault. Other theories are that it was the founding fathers rolling over in their graves, or that it was actually the effects of a 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing in Washington.

This was stolen, I didn't make it up.

Didn't feel a thing. But that's not out of the ordinary.

In the spirit of our times, and for the excellence of the act rather than my assessment of your character, I am inclined to inform you; that's what she said.

From looking at peoples' posts on sites like this: http://www.acadiaforum.net/forum/index.php?topic=9863.msg158526;topicseen

there were tours of those caverns that run along and were caused by the fault line that goes straight through VA going on during the quake.  Funny how, a little over a week ago, I just LEARNED about the damned fault line and now EVERYONE knows about it.  Pretty damned scary to be in the caverns, hear how they're made, and hear the joke about instant death if there's a good sized earthquake--lovely long rock knives coming straight at your head!

One post reads like this from HuffPo:

Quote"I wouldn't want to have been on the Luray Caverns tour when this happened. The tour guides have a little joke they like to tell the tourists. I forget the set-up, but the punchline is: "where else can you get a below-ground burial for twenty-four dollars?"."

Cainad, I either owe you a beer, or a slap on the back of the head.

Possibly both.
