The mother was understandably a wreck with worry. She always fancied herself a good Mom. She spent every waking moment with focused attention for the welfare of her son. After all, that's her job now, right? But there she was, in the doctor's office. She had sat down on the couch just for a little respite. Just a short minute to catch her breath and get ready for the next burst of toddler activity. It all happened so quick.
But Charlie was being such a good boy. He patiently allowed the doctor to perform the examination. He didn't fuss at all. And he was very brave as they did the x-rays. She was very proud of her son and thought to herself, "Maybe I'm still doing okay after all." But she still worried. She was very anxious for the doctor to come back and give her, what she hoped, would be good news. To tell her that this will all resolve quickly and without too much pain for her son. That he won't have to endure an excruciating surgery that will put him off his feet, or alter his way of life.
Finally, the doctor returned to the examination room. He nodded and gave a polite smile as he closed the door and proceeded to sit on the stool. The mother's stomach felt like it was full of fluttery butterflies and her heart felt like it was about to leap from her chest. The doctor began to speak....
"Well, I've looked at all of the x-rays and conferred with my colleagues. And we feel pretty confident that your son will be just fine. And I am convinced that we will not need to perform surgery on your son. He may feel some abdominal discomfort over the next few days."
"Really? That's wonderful." Mom exclaimed. "I hardly believe it. I mean, when I saw that he had actually taken those magnetic numbers off of the refrigerator, and managed to swallow them...I....I just feared the worse."
"Do not worry Mrs. Peterson. We know this has caused you quite a bit of worry and anxiety, but we feel very confident that this 2 shall pass."
