Title: In praise of...the Daily Mail
Post by: Cain on September 13, 2011, 10:54:02 AM
No, this isn't me going all "counter-intuitive" on you and claiming the Daily Mail is great because you get to know all the propaganda that UKIP, the Tories and the BNP are going to use.

Nor is it praising the Mail because of some kind of politically retarded version of a Damascene conversion.

It's because, actually, the Mail has done two excellent bits of reporting lately.

1)  The Mail has reported, in numerous articles, about the relationship between British intelligence services and Colonel Gadaffi, including the latest revelation that control orders may have been put on Libya dissidents at Gadaffi's request, and not due to any sort of risk they posed the UK or any terrorism related offences.

2) The Daily Mail recently published a series of pictures, putting lie in the most mocking of ways to Obama's claim that "Americans...refuse to live in fear", such as pictures of Obama giving his speech behind bullet-proof glass, the closure of Kansas City International Airport, police armed with assault rifles at LAX, similarly armed police at the New York Stock Exchange and sniffer dogs carrying out searches at Colombus Circle.

Now, I'm not entirely sure of their motivations concerning the second one, but the first one is definitely motivated by the desire to prod and goad Labour supporters.  Since, of course, Blair and Brown (and Cameron) were all quite buddy-buddy with Gaddafi until it was decided he was The Greatest Living Threat to Humanity.  Nevertheless, it was good, solid reporting.

It seems not every reporter with a brain was gone after Peter Oborne left....

Huh... I never would have imagined there might be something worth reading in the Daily Mail, but that actually sounds good!

Could just be that the Mail think taking the piss out of Americans will appeal to their readerbase (which... it might). Because obviously, the UK have been much more calm and measured in their response. But it is good to know that there is still some decent journalism in the popular press.

Yeah.  Of course, they were never a big fan of Obama anyway (black, socialist, possibly Muslim).

But Peter Oborne still actually writes for them, as it turns out.  Not as much, given his gig at the Telegraph.  But, as I'm sure you're aware, Oborne is the best right-wing journalist out there (possible exceptions: Alex Massie, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard when talking about economics and NOT Bill Clinton) and a generally decent person, and so there is at least still one major voice of sanity at the Mail.

Yeah, read that myself, and thought I was reading the Express or something for a minute.
