Title: Why feminism is still relevant
Post by: Mesozoic Mister Nigel on September 22, 2011, 09:51:08 PM
This article does, I think, a really good job of illustrating why feminism is still important and relevant, and further, highlights why the most crucial feminists in this age are men:

Of course feminism is relevant...At least feminism as described by my mother:  "Equality in all things; nobody is a doormat."  Anything else is a waste of potential, and looking around, we need all the potential we can get.

I can't see how that would ever stop being relevant, especially given the Christian right's new emphasis on the Book of Timothy and other Paulist crap that dictates women be basically draft animals.

It is now and always has been my view that humans are to be judged, as the man said, on the content of their character...And in the workplace, on their competence and work ethic.  Anything less is essentially Jim Crow inflicted on 51% of the population.

This. I don't really care what you've got between your legs (unless I want to sex you) so much as what's between your ears. Do you treat me fairly? Can you get the job done? These are the important questions and which set of genitals you're born with seems to have no bearing on their answers.

This article does address a significant issue, and an entirely reprehensible behavior in some men.
however, i maintain that the author is wrong in denying that all women are, in fact, crazy.

I agree that women should not be conditioned into devaluing themselves like this, and that men should be more supportive and respectful of women in general. However, women don't need to wait for men to wise up in order to stand up for yourself, to treat yourself with respect and to trust yourself in the face of adversity. It would help a lot if men stopped being assholes like this, but it's not a prerequisite for holding your head up high.

That said, this is a great reminder of a very specific way that women are marginalized. I appreciate having even stronger ammunition for the next time I'm challenged on being a self-identified feminist.

I often feel that everyone, men and women both, should calm down more, unless they mean to go TO THE WALL.

If the person I'm talking to is anxious and emotional, am I'm not at the moment, there's no communication possible.  Am I supposed to ramp up to their excitement level, or do they ramp down to mine?

Sure, there are better ways of phrasing it than, "you're acting crazy", but honestly, I do want them (whatever gender) to calm the fuck down.  That's how mistakes happen.
