Don't know jack about the site linked from, but nothing about it immediately screams "bullshit!" Anybody seen any corroboration that this is authentic?

This is old news, and yes, it happened.
first I've heard about it!
was there ever an official statement about this?

It's been an ongoing issue for about two months... and no, I have seen neither a statement nor any media coverage of it. Citibank, however, has released a statement that there could be a 7-day delay on withdrawals, which I don't think is technically legal but hell, these guys own America, they'll do what they want.

That's pretty much a guaranteed way to cause a run on a bank, isn't it? I mean, maybe I'm taking crazy pills or something, but that's about the dumbest thing a bank can do.
has this been going on outside of the protest epicenters? or does this only happen when an angry mob armed with megaphones assembles outside of a bank?
I can totally see why riot police would stop the bloodthirsty crowds from going into a bank

It's only when it's in the form of an organized protest. It's still technically illegal.
(The mob wasn't exactly bloodthirsty; they just planned to go withdraw at once as a form of protest.)
just playing devil's advocate - I can see how the outraged crowd chanting in unison might go totally apeshit once they got inside the institution they are enraged about. All it takes is the first guy in line getting some push-back from the teller and the shit would hit the fan. And after the tasmanian devil is out of the bag, it'll be really hard to get the protesters back out of the bank again without force.
The event makes a really kickass soundbyte though.
As far as banks are concerned, that is bloodthirsty.

True.
The nice thing is, the fact that the banks are resisting means they're worried.
