Discourse 33: Just Deserts
OR
Discourse 33: Bush Lite
We,Äôre fresh out of real heroes, fresh out of new innovations and ideals. If it isn,Äôt a socialist rehash of somebody else,Äôs ideas then it,Äôs another Jessica Lynch, a manufactured publicity stunt that just happens to have a name and a face. Albert Einstein, Mahatma Ghandi, Jacques Cousteau, Ernesto ,ÄòChe,Äô Guevara, John Lennon, Arthur Clarke, Martin Luther,Ķ they,Äôre all dead, and we have nobody to take their places, nobody to do the impossible job of gently nudging us in the right direction. Somewhere where we aren,Äôt going to end up killing ourselves. The peoples of the western world deserve the fruits of what they have sown. As do all the other peoples of this earth. Not only is tonight,Äôs election result in Australia a loss for intelligence in this country, it is yet another feather in the war bonnet of dumb. Who will cry out? Who will step forward to endure the slings and arrows of the outrageous fortunes that follow dissent?
But captain crunch is long buried in a prison somewhere, Greg and Kerry are dead, and many of history,Äôs greatest minds haven,Äôt joined us for this trip around the sun. These days the only people with fiery personalities and charisma are directing the tanks, not recalling them; and their personality is a cult of lies and slander directed at their opponents; a cipher, just another illusion. The people who stand up have their squeaking voices snatched away by the howling winds of this global shitstorm; a tempest in which nobody is safe a tempest in which every strike of lightning only serves to fuel the flames.
Where is the persuasive conscience of the world? Making headlines for having a strong and consistent position, instead of being photographed in its underwear. Where is the intelligent voice of this world? Reciting articulate arguments against the forces of dumb and their weapons-grade stupidity, instead of debating about the consciousness of bats or whether or not an aborted foetus is still a sentient thing. Where is the voice of peace in this world? Travelling ceaselessly and pushing for an end to this madness, instead sitting on the lawn of a government building. Our heroes today are idiots with no personality, showy loudmouths, and acerbic has-beens, which is, -in case you were wondering- the scripted format for each of the judges on every version of idle. Our heroes are manufactured in studios, sculpted on cameras and carefully edited to be a pristine and sterile perfection. The gods once divided us in two (so the story goes) and now we are doing so again, tearing ourselves from our souls; and every consequence of this society is a just desert we have earned in our carelessness.
Every plane that falls from the sky as a result of military force is our fault through the silence which lends support to empiricist foreign policy. It is our fault in our silence which lends its support to guerrilla operations and suicide bombings. Every shell which guts the house of innocent civilians is our fault through complacency which lends its support to reactionary responses to crises. It is our complacency which gives support to guerrilla elements who use military force to cause planes to fall from the sky. The blood of the dead has been spread far and wide, and there are 6 billion people responsible for it. But there are only so many people who are in the position or have the potential to do something about it.
Is it enough? Will it be you? Or will you tow the line and stay silent, Bush, Bin Laden, Blair, Howard, It,Äôs all just the same ism with a different ugly mug.
Shame on you Australia! shame! As a whole you have let every individual down. As a whole you have doomed yourselves to more of the same: greater misery, more blood and more suffering. That is your desert,Ķ how does it taste?

[Middle English, from Old French deserte, from feminine past participle of deservir, to deserve. See deserve.]
Word History: When Shakespeare says in Sonnet 72, ,ÄúUnless you would devise some virtuous lie,/To do more for me than mine own desert,,Äù he is using the word desert in the sense of ,Äúworthiness; deserving,,Äù a word perhaps most familiar to us in the plural, meaning ,Äúsomething that is deserved,,Äù as in the phrase just deserts. This word goes back to the Latin word dservre, ,Äúto devote oneself to the service of,,Äù which in Vulgar Latin came to mean ,Äúto merit by service.,Äù Dservre is made up of d-, meaning ,Äúthoroughly,,Äù and servre, ,Äúto serve.,Äù Knowing this, we can distinguish this desert from desert, ,Äúa wasteland,,Äù and desert, ,Äúto abandon,,Äù both of which go back to Latin dserere, ,Äúto forsake, leave uninhabited,,Äù which is made up of d-, expressing the notion of undoing, and the verb serere, ,Äúto link together.,Äù We can also distinguish all three deserts from dessert, ,Äúa sweet course at the end of a meal,,Äù which is from the French word desservir, ,Äúto clear the table.,Äù Desservir is made up of des-, expressing the notion of reversal, and servir (from Latin servre), ,Äúto serve,,Äù hence, ,Äúto unserve,Äù or ,Äúto clear the table.,Äù
