Title: Trollface author sues for copyrights
Post by: Bruno on November 19, 2011, 01:13:15 AM
The owner of trollface has recently threatened legal action against Reddit for unfair use of trollface.

Odd how that link is not discussed at all on reddit.

Or that there's only 3 rather low-traffic (given the popularity of f7u12) threads about the subject at all:

http://www.reddit.com/search?q=trollface%20copyright

And the screenshot of the email is 4 months old and the article on YaleLawTech came along a month after that ...

But the first of the 3 threads on reddit mentions "reddit already exploded about this a while ago" (so that's 4 months + a while), except I can't really find any evidence of that. Oh well.

nvm here is the big reddit shitstorm:
http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/ir665/whynne_creator_of_trollface_calls_for_it_to_be/

But actually, if you want to discuss this topic maybe get a new thread, because IMO it's kinda ridiculous (bordering on the disgusting) to jack a thread that is about serious Internet freedoms and a really really scary and horrible legislation, that matters RIGHT NOW, with a four month old bitchfight dead horse about some kid claiming copyright on an Internet meme.

Not that I'm strictly opposed against the latter, but IMO this thread could really do with a split, agreed?

I googled "trollface sopa", and got a bunch of links for Trollface Soap.

http://www.reddit.com/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu/comments/ce308/hey_guys_whos_up_for_trollface_soap/

So, a friend of mine is an artist, and he needed a place to crash for a while, and I had an extra room I wasn't using. For rent one month I had him make me a model of a trollface pipe out of sculpey, which I have used to make a mold that I can cast ceramic pipes with.

It didn't occur to me that someone might actually own trollface until after he had nearly finished the model. My intention was to make the pipes to sell. Now I'm wondering about how to go about trying to get a license to use it commercially.

Ahhh okay now I see why you posted it there :)

(One more reason why Google's so fucked recently IMO, I use DuckDuckGo so often lately--but that's for the other thread in Scientism)

What Dingo said. The author doesn't seem to be adverse to licensing his work.

Yeah. It wasn't intended as a hijack/tangent. I really was thinking about it in the context of the SOPA Act.

Apparently the two things are not related, since, as you pointed out, the Whynne/F7U12 conflict predates SOPA by about 3 months, making it unlikely that Whynne was trolling in a larger context than just fucking with F7U12/Reddit.
