Title: DSPN Presents: No Joy in Beanville
Post by: AFK on February 06, 2012, 01:29:55 PM
Seems like there should be a thread about this.  So I started one.

Was fairly entertaining game.  That last quarter though, if you are a New England fan, was like one of those cliche scenes in an old-timey cartoon.

You know, the one where a character is standing there watching something come at them in slow motion, and they are there waving their arms around saying "NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

On the plus side, the game concluded very conveniently right at my bedtime.

I watched it. I don't know anything about/care anything about football, but I watched it. At this age, it's difficult to avoid it, and even though I was home sick, Pickles had a few mutual friends over, so I was social with them. Plus, food.

There are some benefits to the Superbowl party. You don't really have to watch the game. The commercials are usually pretty good and you get to laugh at the trainwreck that is the Half-Time show.

Actually, the half-time show is funny, because they always choose pop music entertainers, and though the Superbowl draws in a diverse demographic, I don't really see your average football fan enjoying it.

I'm just wondering what team was playing the Giants, because it sure as hell wasn't the Patriots.

And, Madonna's half time show was the most interesting one in recent memory.

In other news, our superbowl party lasted late into the night, and I'm only semi conscious this morning.

They, the Patriots, did seem to be a little less than inspired.

You sure? It looked exactly like the Patriots. You know, the team with the league's worst pass defense, the league's most predictable offense, and the team that only won ONE game against a team with a winning record all year, and only because of a shanked field goal.

tl;dr version: NYAH NYAH NYAH! TOM BRADY WEARS UGG BOOTS!

Even so, it was worse than usual.

Perfectly bookmarked, as well.  I mean, an intentional grounding safety on the first play, and then Welker botching an otherwise completely normal pass at the end?  that goes beyond the pale, if you ask me.

It certainly was interesting. It's seemed incredibly... what's the word...

She was brought in on a throne preceded by and carried in by a Roman legion. It's a hell of an entrance, but come on. And that song that L U V Madonna in the lyrics?

Well, I figure even if we manage to thwart your raids, we could party with you after.

At this point, all I'm prone to do is raid your fridges and steal your women.

Most of Team Vodka concurred that the new single isn't that good -- It was basically a vertical integration vehicle for Niki Minaj's rap.

But as far as sheer spectacle, she really knows how to work a crowd.  The entrance was basically her telling Gaga to go fuck herself, and the arrangements of her past hits were spot on.  Plus, those video screens were pretty awesome.

Bonus points for kicking LMFAO to the curb after a couple of choruses.

Ah, that was the idea behind it. Still, it seemed incredibly egocentric. I know that's kinda the point in pop music, but it just kinda rubs me the wrong way every time I see it happen. Also, reading this article which has this quote, which I find kinda funny.

QuoteMadonna had admittedly been nervous about her performance, hoping to position herself as the queen of a new generation of pop stars with an opulent show and a sharp performance that mixed her new release with more familiar songs.

Madonna, who's been around for ages, is hoping to be queen of a new generation of pop stars?

Considering the Packers left the playoffs early due to the worst defense in the NFL (and despite the best offense), I didn't really have any stake in this game. Still, was fun to watch the last quarter, and to see the Pats get creamed by the Giants.

Seemed to me that the Giants win was at least a good 60% of just the Patriots sucking. Greasy hands much?

Yeah, I would argue that the Pats lost this game, as opposed to the Giants winning it.  That Giants guy, forget his name, did make that clutch catch that got them that first down.  Without that, the Giants likely would've been in a position where they were throwing up hail mary's just to get into FG range.

And yeah, those dropped catches by Welker, and the other guy, that certainly made it a lot easier for the Giants to set up in a situation to win.

I did enjoy the slight little mindfuck that the Pats played on the Giants at the end when they let them score the touchdown.  You could almost watch it in that receiver's face where he was saying to himself "OFUK, I was supposed to stop on the 1, fuck, can't....falling!"

No way. The reason the Pats "lost" the game is because the Giants' front line was so successful in getting pressure on Brady. Those mistakes didn't happen in a vacuum. I don't know who the MVP was. I imagine it was Eli, or maybe Manningham, but it SHOULD have been Justin Tuck.

i went to get my hair cut two days ago.  i go to Sport Clips (where they have sports memorabilia on the walls and tv with games on by each chair) because it is close to me, cheap, and one of the ladies there can cut my hair decently.  Upon sitting down, she says, "so you got your snacks all ready?"
i was completely flummoxed. deer in headlights.
"you sure can't find anything in the grocery store now!"
what?
"it happens every year at super bowl time, i guess.  grocers must love it"
aaaaaaah...   :)
wow.  you kill your TV and you miss a lot of shared culture, but this was the first time that i was completely unaware of the super bowl until the day it was scheduled.  I was too embarrassed about my ignorance to even ask who was playing.  i felt like such a fraud going into a Sport Clips not knowing that it was super bowl weekend....
