Title: PROVIDENCE/BOSTON MEET UP
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on February 08, 2012, 02:55:45 AM
Okay, for what it's worth, Enabler, TGG, and I will be flying into Providence on May 29th.  Luna has graciously offered to host our stay.

Tuesday, May 29th:  Arrival and collapse.
Wednesday, May 30th:  Providence area & getting Luna hammered that evening.
Thursday, May 31st:  Recovery + Providence area + Richter's Vindaloo O DEFF.
Friday, June 1st:  Boston Area.  Hoping to meet up with Twid, Villager, LMNO, whomever else is around.
Saturday, June 2d:  Boston Area.  Hoping damn near everyone can make it.
Sunday, June 3rd:  Providence area, clamshack, TGG wants to poison herself by sticking her toe in the ocean.
Monday, June 4th:  Fly out.

We may, depending on circumstances and Luna's schedule/patience, move the Sunday thing to Thursday, and fly out on Sunday.

One sticky point worth mentioning:  We can't do anything that's strictly 21+, as TGG will be with us...Though that wasn't a problem last time.

If anyone from points south need a place to crash, I can offer up some floor or love seat space for Friday or Saturday nights.  I'm an hour's drive south of Boston.

Of course.

Actual meeting times and places will be set later.  We met gathered last time on the Boston Common, and that worked out okay.

Boston Common is awesome.

If folks want to spend some money on idiot tourist things, there is a ferry that heads out to one of the harbor islands with a big fort on it. it was like $14 for the round trip last year, I think they might be increasing it this summer though.

Although, a Saturday excursion to George's island in the harbor could be pretty cool.  They have hibachi-like things, we could play with fire and do some grilling.

Before my time, what did you do?  :)  I know the German Club, but not much else, other thqn those THINGS they whisper about after hours down at the emergency room.

I am up for just about anything that won't likely get me arrested or fired.  (Assuming, of course, that I am working then.)

While walking through downtown Boston, at lunch time, we were passing open-air restaurants.  Cram whips out his cell phone and starts having a loud conversation with nobody, berating them.  Richter did the same thing down the block, then I did it.

I can't remember what theirs were, but mine was a discussion that went along the lines of, "No, I can't help you, and I wouldn't if I could.  Dogs can't GIVE consent.  You're a dog-fucker, and you're going to jail.  What?  NO!  I will NOT represent a dog-fucker.  Even lawyers have standards!"

The effect on the diners ranged from indifference to goggle-eyed freakouts.

Hey this one time at the UK Day of Discord there was this guy who, well he might have mentioned that he was coming on Syn's board half a day before or so, nobody knew or expected him, and he approached us at the meeting place with:

"Excuse me, but are you the Discordians?",

which I still think was fucking hilarious.

Me, Sjaako, Regret and VITRIOL might be meeting up in a couple of weeks as soon as we can decide on a date, we should probably do that cellphone rampage thing.

I'll have to bring my now completely useless US Virgin "burner" phone for Regret to hold to his ear cause the bloody hippie is one of those that still refuses to own a mobile phone :)

Hey Luna, you remember when we discussed using your birthday as an excuse to get a bunch of us together, dress up, and then start hitting dive bars?

Context-the basic premise is that the group of exquisitely-dressed gentlemen and ladies descend on seedy bars and pretend we just came from a wedding where a bride/groom didn't show. There were some ideas we were batting around. One possibility was that at each bar a different person poses as the jilted lover surrounded by caring friends. Points would be awarded based on sympathy offers (drinks, fucks, bad breakup stories, whatever) and reactions (embarrassed stoicism, slinking out of the bar, demanding the whiner man up, &c.). The problem is obviously the amount of time needed at each bar, and the fact that we don't want anyone getting alcohol poisoning. Another possible version involved Richter posing as the bereft husband-to-be. Once we'd worked up a proper level of sympathy among the other patrons, have EOC or Dimo run in looking frantic and spewing some story about getting held up on the Mass Pike and his phone dying. Whoever keeps a straight face the longest wins.

We were also trying to think how we could guarantee not getting arrested over the course of the evening. The way I see it, having the Good Reverend along for the ride can only be an asset if he thinks it'd be fun.

We probably won't want to waste Roger-time on this. I just figured I'd throw it out there.

That would be a BLAST, but we will have my daughter with us, so bars are pretty much out.  But the basic idea is usable.

She could pose as a DD, which might even make it easier to stay in the bar. "No, just give me a Coke, I'm underage and they promised me $500 if I get them all home safe..."

But I agree, BBQ trumps most other possibilities.

I still love the idea, leln, and we will do this one of these days.  With enough people involved, we can also run the "fleeing groom runs into jilted bride at bar" scenario.

The BBQ sounds awesome!

BBQ: Luna's place has a back yard
Boston Harbor Island stops would be a fine palce too, and LMNO knows that grilling shiz.  I'm only fair after the initial conflagration.

You know, for TRUE style points, we could be the jilted wedding crew at an "Applebee's" or "Olive Garden" type chain.  It's a special sort of asshole who goes there to get hammered.

For added fun, we need a prop ring.  It gets flushed down the john by the jiltee, and then phone calls come in from a penitent bride.

Although, a Saturday excursion to George's island in the harbor could be pretty cool.  They have hibachi-like things, we could play with fire and do some grilling.

Hell yes.  Gives us somewhere to park our asses, too.

I like this.

Incidentally...  This is gonna be the most awesome (close enough) birthday ever.  :-)

Yeah, I have something special in mind for that.

I am excited.  Or terrified.  Or both.

In any case, what we're REALLY looking forward to is LMNO's BBQ idea.

YES.

Boston Harbor Island stops would be a fine palce too, and LMNO knows that grilling shiz.  I'm only fair after the initial conflagration.

I am stifling the comment that I have a ring that I'm not using.  I'd probably regret, eventually, having it flushed.

We do a BBQ, I can probably be convinced to do a batch of "shut up and eat it."

We're coming out to see you guys.

Anything that helps that happen in a relaxing atmosphere is exactly what I'm after.  Hell, the backyard BBQ sounds even better than the one in the park, as it's a lot less hassle, and no park bathroom experience, if you catch my drift.

Question.  Really important question:  Is it easier in general for Boston Spags to get to Providence, or for Providence Spags to get to Boston?  Because it seems to me that a back yard thing would be far more convenient and relaxing/enjoyable than in a public park.

Like I said, we want to see as many people as we can...And we'll be spending a MINIMUM of one day in Boston, anyway.

Since I'll have the car, anyone who needs to get a lift to or from Providence can jump in with me. If it's on a week night, Villager might be disinclined to attend (she goes to sleep early).

Also there is a possibility that around that time pickles will have joined the military. In the event that happens it will basically be me and another dude watching the place and pickleson will be staying with picklesmom. This would free up sleeping space for possibly up to five people.

I wouldnt rely on this possibility but its there. If its probability increases significantly ill let you all know.

Also, we'll figure out additional space of Phox can attend.

Swote.  We might also have to arrange lodgings for Cramulus & Cainad, if they can attend.  Because they NEED the Clamshack.

We can CRAM them in somewhere.

:regret:

I'm aiming to attend! That is to say - I wrote it on my calendar.  :p

Does the clamshack have stuff that isn't seafood? Clams are really not my bag.

Not at all, but I figured that I might as well check to see if there are any cheap bus rides up there. The Southeastern Discordians don't get around to many meet-ups.

This. I drove Suu back to Providence recently, and minus time to eat dinner, it took me about an hour and 40 min to drop her off and drive up back to Boston. New England states are small, like they're supposed to be. Last time Roger was here, they all took the commuter rail back to Providence.

My passage to Wisconsin (or rather, Chicago, and then a scenic drive to Milwaukee...) has been booked. I have been warned that I am going to get drunk and filled with cheese. I've never been so turned-on in my life.

Long story short, I won't be around that weekend.

Also, I think that my not attending should not prevent a meetup from occurring.  It kills me that so many of you live within a stones-throw of each other, yet you're not out tearing up the monkey cage more regularly.

nah, in one of the saddest days in history for bums and those who like to get inappropriately twisted before showing up to "respectable" parties, the FDA made them take the caffeine out of it.

So gogira, gogirus (thats what ill call him here for now), villager and myself met for dinner tonight. Whether gogira has concluded that im not a serial killer is up to her but both villager and i have a positive impression of the gogiri and i had fun. I didnt feel as awkward as i do with most first meetings. Mostly because villager warmed up to both pretty quickly and gogirus was able to keep conversation going. Villagers automatic default is dislike at first so im impressed.

Lmno- whenever youre free let us know.

I'll be in Woods Hole sometime in May, but my understanding of the job we're doing there is that we'll be in port for a day or three, then going out into the middle of bum-fucked nowhere for a week or two, then back to Woods Hole for another couple days. So it may end up being logistically impossible, but if any of you spags wanna make the trip out to Woods Hole and terrorize the NOAAtards with me you're more than welcome.
