Title: This is AWESOME
Post by: Mesozoic Mister Nigel on February 08, 2012, 07:11:57 AM
Being in school now is amazing, for one primary reason, and that reason is that I am receiving validation now for the ideas I had when I was in school 20 years ago that were dismissed. Worker alienation, corporate manipulation, the impossibility of endless corporate growth, the emergence of the imperial police state... all these ideas won me nothing but scoffing and mockery 20 years ago, but are now completely accepted as facts of the current breakdown. And, as awful as it is, I love it all, because it means that if those outrageous ideas of my 20-year-old-self are real and valid, than so, quite likely, are the other ideas.

Isn't it great?! I had a similar experience when I went back to school.

Fucked in the manner that she was previously ridiculed for saying, but now is vindicated by academic agreement...

:awesome:

The economy was too good for people accept the truth.

And, the information age is transforming the world in a way that is only somewhat comparable to the effects of Gutenburg's printing press.

It fits for me that you were a very early and savvy participant in internet culture AND reached highly accurate conclusions about the world before reality started ripping through the wool people have been pulling over their eyes for 20 years.

I used to get REAMED for my assertion that women mass-joining the workforce was a major contributing factor to wage stagnation and unemployment. I was like "BUT YOU CAN'T JUST INCREASE THE WORKFORCE BY 60% WITHOUT ECONOMIC RAMIFICATIONS" and they were all "THAT'S SEXIST!"

Girl, I am FEELIN' you, dog. In SOOOO many ways. Not just my recent success, but this tinfoil hat I've been wearing since I was 19? Yeah, people ain't so quick to slap that shit off my head anymore...unless it's to steal it for themselves.

Let my 19-year-old, batshit, know-it-all, neo-beatnik, anti-corporatist self personally validate you for LYFE.

Ideology doesn't change reality.

Some people never learn that.

When I was younger, I was called a mad paranoid bastard.

Now I'm called "insightful".

My behavior hasn't changed all that much.

I'd be worried if my 19-year old self started making sense. That cat was up the wall.

I think I'm an outlier in terms of being a dumb youngster with weird ideas. This is mostly because you spags have been influencing my thought processes and general worldview for about 4 years, since I was 17. PD.com is a very unusual intellectual culture for an introspective teenager to grow up in.

I kind of wonder how that will affect how I look upon myself 10 or 20 years from now.

One of the things I love about this place is that when discussion is active, it's way the hell up there intellectually speaking. I've never found any other forum with this level of intellectual and creative activity, or anything even close to it. In all sincerity, PD has made me a smarter person with better critical thinking skills and a more expansive education than I would have without it.

I like to think that PD.com is the only place that tells you to be yourself, your real self, and MEANS it.

Which is why I think the allergic reaction to noobs coming in - with the intent to be the zaniest guy in the room - occurs.  They're not thinking for themselves, they're performing with the intent to be someone else to everyone else.

Except for AKK.  He was for real.  Which was even worse.

The Seekers board was close IMO, in its most active days, before Fravia+ died. But it was more tech-focused and even taking that into account, PD is better :) We used to call it "a collection of smart people". What PD taught me, is that just "smart people" is not quite enough, they need to be bipeds too.
