Does anyone else have the problem of browsing the online Kindle store, just aimlessly, then finding tons of interesting books for relatively minor sums, then abusing the hell out of "one-click delivery" to be able to instantly read them?
A need for instant gratification and large amounts of disposable income is a bad mix. I shall buy ALL the interesting ebooks.
Do you have the Fire? I ask because my wife is supposed to be getting one as a 'thank you' from one of her vendors. I'm thinking it should be miles better than the piece of crap Literati, she received for Xmas.
No, mine is the light model that came out in 2010, with the keyboard. The one there was endless advertising for.
The problem is, with the price of many books (that I'm interested in, anyway) being literally only a couple of pounds, and being able to be bought and delivered with a single click of a button, and read only minutes later, I'm finding it especially hard to resist the temptation to buy hundreds of books.
I think my wife will have that same issue. Thankfully we have small children to eat into reading time to, somewhat, keep that in check.
it's gotten worse for me, lately. Still waiting in the wings:
It's Even Worse Than it Looks
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
The Science of Science Policy
Patti Smith: Just Kids
Influence: Science and Practice
Thinking, Fast and Slow
Bob Mould: See a Little Light
All Souls
I actually perfer the older kindles to the fire, the eink is much nicer to read then the colour screen.
The only thing with digital books is not everything is commited to digital form yet. I went hunting the place of dead roads and the western lands for two hours before it dawned on me that no one has created a digital copy of them yet.

I have this problem, minus the disposable income.

I've read that in many of the reviews, and that they are also harder to read outside in sunlight. But, I figure if it's free, it's something to live with.
Kindle is still black & white, yes?

I don't know if you can still get the black and white ones, but I think you can.

If you make Amazon your first stop you can easily tell if there's a digitized version before heading to the torrents. Plus, you can click a button to request that the publisher get on the stick and make a digitized version.

Don't want it B&W. If I am going to sully myself with fake books, I at least expect color.

You can, they're about £80, whatever that is in fake money.
Forty cubits, I believe.
300 Farmville crops.
One day, I'll cave in and buy one.
BUT NOT TODAY!
NO I DO NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM!!!!! WHY????? BECAUSE I AM LIKE THE PLAGUE TO KINDLES!!!! MY PRESENCE DESTROYS THEIR VITAL ESENSE!!!!!!!!!
But I do have a stupidly large number of free ebooks.
I have had to be very stern with myself... I sneak to the "Kindle Bestsellers" page and restrict myself to the "Top 100 Free" listings.
The Kindle has taken my normal cycle of not finishing books and amplified it by 10. Normally I buy a batch of books, get halfway through most of them, get a new batch of books, get halfway through them, go back and finish the first batch, and finally get a new batch. Repeat until death.
Now its worse because while in the past I could isolate myself with one book and say "I am going to finish this book" now I have all of them, at all times. I think Im going to sit down and finally finish this book when all of the sudden my ADD kicks in and Im reading Gravitys Rainbow.
Who needs color books? :?
OK, other than cookbooks and picture books.

Yeah.
I'm not talking superhero garbage here, I'm talking Ellis and Hickman. Both of them, incidentally, use color as cues to the storyline.

Yeah, for stuff like that a black and white e-reader would be useless.

Both of which write superhero comics and both have done it really well. They are amoung the handful of writers willing to make superheros interesting.
For comic reading I would suggest a tablet over a kindle. Screen size and resolution make it more tollerable though nothing beats having the physical copy in your hands.

Agreed... I haven't bought an actual physical BOOK (aside from RPG books) in ages... But I still get my comics on paper.

Yes, but they also wrote things that I personally like to read. Which doesn't include superheros. Not knocking the genre, I just plain can't stand it myself.

Nope. The closest I come is
Planetary by Warren Ellis, and only because of the bronze age of pulp feel to it.

That's pretty damn close considering they had homage to the avengers, fantastic four and justice league in that comic. There's a lot wrong with superhero comics, with comics in general. But I'd never write off a genre, I only follow writers not story types.
When someone complains about something people do tend to start listing titles of the good stuff which is an annoying response but I'll do it anyway: My recommendation for a top of the market Superhero comic that breaks the mold and has a grim Thachers Britain feel is Alan moores Miracle Man.
I know two years or so ago I suggested trans met to you and planetary and got a similar response, so I'll turn you yet.

My problem with most superhero stories is that they follow the soap opera format...The story must continue, so things that should be life-changing events sort of blur into minor blips.
The Watchmen was a counter-example...It had a beginning, a middle, and an end. Planetary is the same way. Superman? After 70 years or so, what can they do with the character? Nothing.

Yeah, I definitely get that one. When I do go for supers, it's usually only for one author's run on a thing, or only a couple trades. Like, I would never say I'm a fan of Animal Man, but Grant Morrison's run on it was fucking amazing. And then it was over, and I never read any Animal Man again.
