I believe Norway is still a world leader in international aid. Would you call it a liberal, or left-leaning society in general?

Norway is a mostly well-functioning social democracy. I have no idea how that translates to American terms.

In American terms, it may translate into Nanny-state Communist. I'm not sure, I'm Australian.

Sounds about right. To be honest I have even less knowledge about Australian politics. I do know there was a Prime Minister who went for a swim and disappeared once.

Wow, that was 1967. There's even a conspiracy theory that he was taken by a Chinese submarine. Also, he was killed by American frog-men because he was opposed to the Pine Gap military base which we gave to the Americans for free. Or he was a Chinese spy, and voluntarily entered their submarine.
What's even funnier is that it took until 2005 for a coroner to rule such "theories" out.

But hey, we're talking Norway. Sorry.
I forget wich bit it was in but ill dig it up when i get home.
In the united states the kingdom of norway is considered a failed socialist state that is barely functioning and everyone has no money due to exorbitant taxes that no one wants a non functioning healthcare system and a low quality of life despite all evidence to the contrary. At least if you describe yourself as conservative. They always say that whenever you bring up any scandinavian country successfully creating a mixed economy.

lolwut. Norway has a lot of problems, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, other than short term.
Also high taxes? 25-36% is the usual. I was under the impression that that is about the same as Murka.
They also bring up collapsed banking systems which had nothing to do with america in anyway whatsoever. No its always the europeans and obama who screwed up.
Yeah between state and federal i get about 20% taken out. Its also worth noting though how little money i make per week so of course its a little lower than average. But were asking a bunch of racist rednecks and their corporate puppetmasters to make sense and use facts. Also this response will be delayed since my train went underground midpost. But yeah the assumption is that your tax rate is above half. Im not even shitting you. But who needs facts? Hell id live in norway if it contained boston and you didnt eat weird shit.

Americans are retarded, as a rule. I get about 25-28% taken out in taxes (between federal, state, payroll taxes, social "security", FICA, medicare, etc.) and I still have to pay out of pocket if I do something as unamerican as getting hurt or sick. Also I have to live in a country with a bunch of unattractive retards and hardly any good music.
I actually have a Norway question that maybe you can answer:
I am under the impression that immigrating to Norway is significantly easier if you can prove that your parents or grandparents emigrated from Norway and held Norwegian citizenship. Any truth to that? America doesn't look like it's going to stop being an aloof and useless colonial master of my homeland anytime soon and on my list of countries I'd want to live in, Norway ranks higher than any other non-tropical country.
What ech said except the insurance bit since im in massachusetts and get romn... I mean... Obamacare....

I actually don't know. But I'll look into it. :)
Awesome, and thanks in advance. Norwegian is linguistically close enough to English that I think I could learn it fairly easily, and one of the advantages of my chosen career is that I can pretty much get hired anywhere in the world that I can legally work. This isn't a spur-of-the-moment question either, I've been contemplating this for years.

Hmm, I'd fit in under #4 but I don't have a college degree. How easy would it be for an english-speaking chef to get a job there? 2. Are a refugee of some sort (for instance of you are oppressed and from a country not allied to Norway)
3. have a near relative or spouse living in Norway.
4. Have an intention to work here, sufficient funds to survive half a year here, and an education beyond high school level.
Hmm, I'd fit in under #4 but I don't have a college degree. How easy would it be for an english-speaking chef to get a job there? And can you show up on a tourist visa and apply for residency from inside Norway, or is it one of those deals where you have to apply for the residency visa from outside the country?

thanks! I wasn't being lazy about looking it up for myself, my google-fu was just failing me and leading me to a bunch of those "give us thousands of dollars and we'll maybe get you the visa you want!" links.
Wow, they sure don't make it easy. It looks like the only way I could get in would be as a seafarer on a ship engaged in international trade or commerce or as an ethnic cook. I'm not sure if "regional American" counts as an ethnic cuisine and unfortunately I haven't spent enough time working in West Indian restaurants to fulfill the requirement.

For the middle and lower class. Upper class pays less than that, at about ~15%, IIRC.

Unless you happen to be from the Russian border regions, I don't think so.
From what I know of Norwegian immigration policy, if you're from outside Europe you can move here if you:
1. Get a job here.
2. Are a refugee of some sort (for instance of you are oppressed and from a country not allied to Norway)
3. have a near relative or spouse living in Norway.
4. Have an intention to work here, sufficient funds to survive half a year here, and an education beyond high school level.
From what the UDI site says, it looks like there's ways if you want it bad enough. Even a sham marriage might do it.
And this doesn't cover Norway specifically but there's tons of good info:
