Feel free to move this to another forum, sticky it, or both. But I think it's a pretty good reference thread to have.
If we have a question about geopolitics, we go, "Hey Cain!"
If we have a question about biology in general and entomology in particular, we go, "Hey Kai!" (btw Kai, I may ask for some intel on Cimicidae since I am now at war. Know your enemy.)
And....
Hey if we have programming questions, Trip, Faust, and I think Pent. And.....?
So tell us a bit about what you are at least familiar enough to comment on in some sort of professional (this word may be interpreted loosely) degree.
So, me:
I am Twid.
I never finished college, but my areas of interest are linguistics and astronomy/cosmology.
I am, I suppose, a semi professional musician, specifically a guitarist, bassist and vocalist. I cannot read music but I can describe music theory (just as I can understand astronomy/cosmology to a degree in that I can't perform complex mathematics). So I can comment on music and the pitfalls of being a musician, copyright, and a few other things.
Since 2000 I have worked for the same medical research institute, so I can comment to some degree on medical research, epidemiology and oncology, and somewhat nutrition in particular, but mind that I am a layman, office support, always have been, and that my understanding has been through osmosis and prolonged graphite exposure.
:looks around room:
Irish folk customs, with focus on Connemara.
Linguistic strength is in Latin primarily (though rusty) and Modern Irish (working to improve significantly) though I have also studied French and Russian (I reckon my Russian has atrophied quite a bit) and made a half hearted attempt at Sumerian as used during the Ur III dynasty.
Mythology, focus on Greco-Roman and Insular Celtic. Other mythological interests include Catholicism (especially hagiography) and Zoroastrianism.
History: Classical, American Pre-Civil War, to some degree Middle Ages Western Europe.
Also, feel free to quote and add to someone's post if you think they missed something or needs some other sort of clarification or addendum.
This will answer a burning question that has been out there....
I hAve a Bachelors of scoence in Environmental Policy and a Masters in Public Policy and Political Management. I also have a Minor in Economics though I will not profess to be any kind of expert in that area.
So I have a pretty solid background when it comes to, mostly, state and local politics as well as national. I'm interested in the international stuff but it isn't my bread and butter like it is others.
The latter which is being specifically put to work in my profession as a coordinator of a substance abuse prevention federal grant, which is all about community building, coalition building, and affecting policies on a state and local level to prevent youth substance abuse.
Outside of that, I am a musician. I am a member of a local hand drumming ensemble as well as extended family of an improvisational band based out of Eastern Maine.
I'm also the King of Pain, er I mean Pun.
And I'm an excellent dancer!
I'm Scottish. My specialities are alcohol, violence and bitching about the weather.
I can program databases but I don't know shit about IP networking and all the kind of crap that most laymen want to know about so don't ask and I won't tell you some really convincing bullshit that I just made up.
Oh yeah, that's another speciality - really convincing bullshit. You'll hate yourself for falling for it.
I have very few qualifications, having found that convincing bullshit opens a lot more doors than a smartest-guy-in-the-room certificate. I have a HND in computing and a driving license and, tbh, the driving license is about the only one that's ever been any use to me.
I know a little about a lot.
Things I tend to talk about:
Music (listening/playing/recording)
Food (cooking/eating)
Physics (mainly high-level conceptual stuff, not maths)
Perception psychology (BIP, et al)
Discoridian theology (I didn't kill my idol, I ate him)
Fabulosity (let's have a kiki)
The way the military (and other bureaucracies) work.
Industrial maintenance.
Interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution.
The US constitution.
Ranting.
Batch Arts in Education. Major Japanese, Minor English.
Education and Japanese are my main areas.
Interest in history and politics but am hardly the go to guy.
Arguing until my brain melts through the back of my head, whereupon I shake like a dog and get it on everyone.
Anything that involves typography.
I've had a few years of communication, psychology, social psychology, and marketing, so I have a decent grasp of it, but also am acutely aware of how little I know.
Hypnosis.
A little Zen meditation, a little Vipassana meditation, and a little mindfulness meditation.
AT WORK: IP networking, emphasis on Microsoft technologies. Network Routing, Active Directory management. Email systems, yadda yadda yadda.
AT HOME: Composing really great music in my head, and interpreting it poorly through the medium of guitar and computer-based drum sequencers.
I can read music, although I can't sight read (that is, read it fast enough to play it)
I know Tarot really well.
I know wine and beer, worked as a sommelier and can advise on food and wine pairings.
I'm a professional body piercer.
Grew up on a (semi) functioning commune.
- Computers, software not hardware. Computer programming. Algorithms.
- Medium knowledge of networking and Internet, mostly theory.
- Theoretical Computer Science. Mathematics, mostly discrete Maths.
- Computational Science (number crunching, graph plotting, data analysis).
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, mostly on the practical topics of data mining, statistics, pattern recognition, computer vision, not so much about the philosophical implications of hypothetical "hard AI".
- Web application development, HTML, CSS, Javascript, web security.
- Democoding. Generative Art. Magic Crazy Computer Shit.
So yeah, I got a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. I'd *almost* have had a Master's degree in Computational Science (specialisation Machine Learning) too, I passed all the courses, but couldn't finish the final research thesis bit when I got hit by a burnout that I've been slowly recovering from over the past 5-6 years (tedious? you bet!!)
- Graphics designs, pretty things and colours, writing enthousiastic promotional bits (although I suspect most PDers are good if not better at that than me, I have noticed that I'm still a few miles ahead of the avg idiot on the street). Typography.
- I can draw stuff!
- Relentless mega brainstorming powers.
- My younger self would have never believed this, but it turns out I'm pretty good at languages. I can pun natively in at least two.
- Good at explaining complex things.
- I know a thing or two about divination and mystic symbolism. Qabalah, I-Ching, Tarot. Yoga, meditation.
- A thing or two about cooking.
- And I know a lot about the digital signal processing side of music and audio. I'm not very good with instruments or musical notes or tunes.
I probably forgot some things. Is this me? I think not. Fortunately I'm also the go-to-guy is you need someone really nice that's got his heart in the right place.
Don't forget JOGMA!
000 is also a master whittler.
I wander from town to town and try to discover meaning. So far there has been no fruit of labors. Thought I will share experiences with you if you wish :)
I design clothing and patches and hats from time to time.
I have a large collection of multiple types of music many find obscure, which I will share. It generally has to do with swing, punk, psychobilly, horrorpunk, etc for I love old horror films and monsters.
I play a large collection of video games as well from Diablo 3 (which is a bust don't waste your money) to Sins of a Solar Empire, Age of Empires, Homeworld, Planescape Torment, Neverwinter Nights, etc. The only ones I don't play or know about really are MMO's as I hate being a mailman with drawn out battles with a passion. I kinda miss LOGD now that I think about it....

American history (especially post-Reconstruction and Civil Rights Movement)
Education (well, really, the practical results of education policy)
Things I can talk semi-knowledgeably about:
Feminism
I can talk semi-knowledgeably about Norwegian politics.
I can play a few instruments, read and (to some extent) sight-read music.
Other than that, I know a little bit about very many things.
-Video Games (especially minesweeper, WoW, Fallout, ), but not programming/design of games
-bits of music performance knowledge (clarinet specifically)
-The environment (undergraduate level)
-Trouble-shooting computers/devices and basic logic stuff
-Retail Pharmacy (and all the wondrous things that go along with it)
-being socially awkward
i'll add more if i think of any

I can talk semi-knowledgeably about a lot of stuff, I don't specialize. Cooking, some history, dogs, TCM, just weird shit.
I've had a knack for drawing and painting since I was a little kid. Never had an opportunity to study but I've sold a lot of stuff. It doesn't compensate me for the hours I put into it though, so I don't bother much.
Fortune telling shit, especially Lenormand. Hey, a woman's gotta live and I hate retail.
Specialty?
Specialties.
I'm a goddamn industry professional. We've had this discussion, PD. We have.
Who the hell is anyone to give themselves a label other THAN being a professional at being ourselves? But, since you asked...
My name is Suu. My specialties include the study of textiles and clothing with an in depth focus of Imperial and Eastern Imperial (Byzantium) Rome. I'm a bartender, and a fucking good one, but I haven't worked in the field since I decided to end my social life by going back to school full-time. I've recently been accepted to be part of a team of student archaeologists to go to Israel next summer to work on Stage 3 and 4 sites on the Mediterranean coast.
I like to write, I like to draw, I can't hold down a job in this shit economy as New England is about 6 months to a year behind the rest of the Nation in recovering from this recession, so I seriously just said, "Fuck it" and went gung-ho by being self-employed this summer. So far, it was the best choice I've made. The taxes are going to such, but it's something I enjoy doing and I'm making decent money just by being creative. Sure, there's no benefits. There's no glamour. It's just Suu at her sewing machine.
So, uh, what's up, spags?

- Lovemaking in many legal and semi-legal varieties.

Yes. Paganism is a shameful shameful thing.
I'm going to add to mine, since it has been a long time interest (since I was 6) and wish I had more physics behind it, but can talk about implausibility and consequences:
Time travel.
I have always been interested in time travel. It's what originally made me want to be the scientist I never became (I got the music bug around the age of 12. Seems it's starting to come around full circle at almost 31). It's what got me interested in Einstein, Sagan and Hawking. And space.
How is time marked? By the patterns of Sol, Luna, and Terra. Those three. We even measure long distances in space by Earth measurements (it's our year that we use as a base).
Space. Time.
Spacetime.
Jesus, how did I get here?
I don't regret anything but being an office schlub at a hospital trying to make it as a musician? Wow. My life trajectory bounced off and veered off into a totally different direction where I work in science but am in no ways a professional scientist (anyone who uses the scientific method is a scientist, just as anyone who manipulates soundwaves is a musician. This is a necessary branching off for everyone. This may get messy.
Um, I do programming things. If you have questions about that sort of thing, I'd still suggest asking Trip, but I'll read your questions and his answers and be interested. I'm specifically interested in computer security and about to start work in data integrity and fraud detection, inventing ways to rip off my company and then creating safeguards against those.

My specialties include:
- SWORDS, sticks, and other physics applicators: the use, misuse, maintenance and construction thereof.
- Cooking: Greater Bachelor
- Metal / wood / bone / leatherworking with hand or power tools
- Psychology
- Teaching: Any skill set I've had time to learn
- Finance: Educational and personal
- Writing: Satire, humor, lesson planning, public presentation
- Vehicle operation: Anything with wheels or floating 50 feet long or less

Hummm, let's see. I don't have that many specialties (at least as many as I would like to have), but the ones I have are these, I guess:
1- I am a native speaker of portuguese.
2- I act, having read some books about it and attended some classes.
3- I write, aiming to, someday, become a full-fledged writer.
4- I read a lot of psychology texts, and enjoy them greatly. So, I'd say I have a slightly above layman knowledge about this topic.
5- I read a lot of webcomics and play videogames, so, yeah, there's that.
6- I enjoy filosophy, and have some knowledge about it.
7- Same thing with sociology.
Specialties?
-blasphemy brownies and some other desserts
-accidentally vegan cooking with FAR too much fiber in it.
-I'm about 1/4 of the way to claiming a specialty in libraries. Does that count? Channeled ocd ftw.
-flashes of comprehensive recall that make people think I actually know what I'm talking about and/or doing.
-occasionally hurting people's brains without experiencing the accompanying mental images myself (though this one might just be a side effect of being related to Richter)

Nope. I am PD's "politics" person. "Everyone" knows it, apparently. I've been pigeonholed into that role and, apart from education, I bet you not one person here could name something I have any special knowledge or experience of.
Speciality is overrated, anyway. Most "professionals" outside of carefully bounded disciplines (chess, fire rescue, medical professionals) are either no better or only very slightly better than the average reader of the New York Times when it comes to making predictions. Which is depressing in and of itself, given how fucking awful so many NYT articles and op-eds are.
Pretty sure you have in-depth special knowledge of dealing with impudent teenage boarding students, take-out foods, working in restaurants for asshole crime-connected bosses, and, for some reason, foreign blonde teachers of various disciplines.

DAILY DISTRACTIONS
and wasting time. other than that, i have no skills what are useful on this forum.
Your comparative religions expertise and peculiar obsession with gang psychology would probably make for some insightful, if unconventional, additions.
Cain, I'd also add to your list: Rationality, Philosophy (classical), Philosophy (post-modern), writing, Economics, working the front door at dodgy pubs, and not taking shit from anyone.
Even if it's not your "specialty", you know more about that shit than the majority of people here. Especially me.
Stress management.

I gave this some thought and I'm reasonable certain Cain is a good person to ask about:
Surviving (I dunno about the wild, but definitely in London)
Making cheap tasty food (though I suppose that could go under the first one)
Climbing things, right? You like to climb. Or have done? Yes, I think so.
Handling people, dealing with stupid one's effectively.

LISTEN, FUCKER, I AM THE MOST RELAXED AND SERENE MOTHERFUCKER THAT EVER LIVED, AND IF THAT BUDDHA JACKASS SAYS OTHERWISE, YOU LET ME KNOW, BECAUSE I'VE GOT A SIZE 12 ENGINEER BOOT THAT HE CAN RUB THROUGH HIS FAT-ASS BELLY AFTER I SHOVE IT UP HIS ASS!
I must say, Roger's proven method of yelling the truth into being as made me the calm, gentle creature I am today.

Truth does not whisper. It bellows...It has to, because nobody fucking listens.
I'm not sure I'm a good resource for very much that can't be gotten to otherwise.
I'm very good with people, especially IRL. I can talk to nearly anyone about anything for as long as is required. This time is expanded if I am allowed to swear and be angry. But I can talkandtalkandtalk until my throat cannot actually take it anymore (true story).
I'm also very good at public speaking and giving presentations.
I know a lot about massage, muscles, etc. But there is still a whole lot I don't know.
I have away with words, but I'm better at saying them than writing them.
Parenting. I think I have a knack. I see kids in the store screaming and screaming and my kid just looks at them like "WTF, dude? Chill out." He's very well behaved. That shit does not just happen on it's own.
(BTW, Nigel is also very good at this. No one removed food from her fridge without asking. And they were so excited when she said, "Sure." Later when I told her about she was like, "Bwuh?" {and Roger, well, he clearly taught his kids how to make the world a better place in their own special, sometimes painful way, and for this we can only thank him})

Until they were 5, I lied to them about everything, and spanked them if they misbehaved.
After they were 5, I told them the unvarnished truth about everything, and laughed at them when they misbehaved.
Cain, besides what other people have mentioned, I believe you're a black belt, a good dancer, knowledgeable about scotch, can outmaneuver rabid dogs like nobody's business, and I'm pretty sure you climb mountains.

Um, aren't you somewhat decent at cooking Chinese food?
And you, like, like philosophy and shit. Like, those existentialist dudes, mebbe?
And the martial arts things other people mentioned. And collecting obscure texts because you've already found a copy of all of the rest of everything anyone ever wrote.
SO CAIN I HERD YOU LIEK MOUNTAINS
CLIMBING
Cain is I think an expert on anti-terrorism thingy.
I am an expert at not knowing enough about something to contribute meaningfully, unless I use a personal story to show I know and understand a similar thing what's being discussed.
I am an expert at having extreme emotional states.
I am an expert at having unfounded suspicion of people and their motives, particularly in media, most recently.
I am an expert at DERP.
