Title: Boston PD's union newsletter
Post by: Cain on July 02, 2012, 02:48:49 PM
So, this is a thing (http://bppa.org/PAX/PAX%202012%20MayJune.pdf).

A thing which is like listening to talk radio, in 1993. In text form.  Badly formatted text form.

Interspersed with adverts from various companies trying to curry favour with the Boston PD.

Got a 404, but I read about it in the Metro the other day.

This is basically the column where the cop is slamming Elizabeth Warren and calls her a squaw, right? And that Simmons pulled its advertising as a result?

Apparently the union newsletter has been like this for years. Or more likely, forever.

I don't know about the pulled adveritising, but it is indeed full of things like this:

QuoteHow coincidental was it that the Occupy Movement chose May 1 to stage another protest. For those of you not in the know May 1 is the Communist 4th of July. Redistribute wealth, anarchy, upend the government, new morals, if that's not Marxism I don't know what is. Happy Birthday you rotten Commies! Maybe your candidate for squaw I mean senator, Liz Warren (your founder) can bake you a cake. I hear she has a whole cookbook full of plagiarized recipes...

Yep, that's the article.

What happened after that is that an alumna from Simmons (which up until recently was an all women's college) noticed that Simmons was advertising in it, and gave them the heads up that it was just a really shitty rag and they should pull advertising.

Simmons did, noting that they were unaware of the newsletter's rampant sexism, among other things. It sparked at least a minor Twitter thing where various people encouraged other advertisers to pull out of the newsletter, such as Shaw's (one of the supermarket chains that can be found here).

Of course, the commissioner came out and publically condemned the speech in the newsletter saying it was inappropriate or something.

I have nothing to add to this discussion, except that I too got a 404 at first, until I removed the extra "l" from the end of the URL.

End of transmission.

Apologies, that was definitely a mistake on my part.  Problem now fixed.

Cheers, I can see it now.

Yeah, it wasn't just that column then. Looks like I'm not going to be drinking Harpoon IPA for a while.

Good find Cain, I'm going to have to read this more in depth. It would be good to get a glimpse into the mindset of a Boston cop. I like to know what "heroes" think. I wonder if Somerville has a similar one or if they're under the aegis of the Boston union.

Quote1. What is the most shocking thing about the unusually high performance by the fascist
Golden Dawn Party in Greece's recent parliamentary elections?
a. That votes would be wasted on a borderline Neo-Nazi party in the midst of an
economic crisis
b. That a modern European people would ever flirt with fascism again
c. That the shadow of fascism is always claimed to be descending upon America,
yet always only seems to land in Europe

What percentage of Greek law enforcement voted for Golden Dawn again?  :lulz:
