Title: HEY, BIP, etc AUTHORS
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on July 12, 2012, 07:21:15 PM
My local gameshop dude is a fairly recent convert.  He wants to sell the PD in the store, and he wants to sell PDFs of the books we've made.

He isn't expecting it for free, of course.  We may be horrible bastards out here in the desert, but we aren't communists.

I propose this:  We let him sell copies, and he paypals Faust whatever we as authors agree on.   Faust uses it to maintain the board.  So, two questions:

1.  Is everyone okay with this?

2.  How much of each sale should he send to Faust?  Since he'll be selling them as PDFs, he's not going to be dealing with any overhead, here.  I'd suggest 50%.

I AM MORE THAN OKAY WITH THIS, AND ANYONE WHO OBJECTS IS THE CANCER KILLING PD.

Although, I would, out of an overblown sense of grandeur, like him to give us a chance to put together a really snazzy and POP BANG WHAMMO-looking PDF/book thing that has an aesthetic appeal as well as intellectual appeal.

1. Yes
2.  50% seems fair.

I forget if I wrote anything of substance for the BIP, but if I did, I'm okay with this.

About 50% being fair, I don't know (either way) ... because I don't quite understand what exactly is being sold here, and which books?

Is he *selling* PDFs of books we have made that are in fact simply available for free? Why won't whoever is going to buy that just download the free PDFs instead? And if the answer is something like "to support the artists", (after my first thought of "pull the other one, it's got bells on"), then I'm not completely sure if 50% is a fair cut if there's no overhead involved. <-- but don't jump on me because I'm entirely unfamiliar with the maths here and what is customary in the US and after taxes and tips there's nothing left anyway plus he'll price it wrong (or not at all) or is that just a New England thing :-P

On the other hand, it all adds up to 1) more exposure for us and 2) more moneys for our servert. So that's good.

1.  He'd sell them successfully for two reasons:

A)  People will actually see them and know they exist, and

B)  People - Americans, anyway - WANT to pay to know what they really think.  They don't value any free ideas.

2.  I throw 50% out there, because there's not going to be a lot of income from this.  He's doing it for a lark, and I expect the grand total income for PD might be around $20-30 USD, absolute tops.  But as you say, it's exposure for our ideas, and any little bit helps, server-wise.

I spoke with Cain over at The Postmodern Prince, and he's okay with this.

Incidentally, if you want to talk to Cain, you have to go there to do it.  He says he's not coming back or having anything to do with PD, and I'm reasonably sure he means it.

I don't know if I have any content in any of that shit, but if I do it's fine with me for it to be used to do whatever...

If he wants to order the Chao te Ching from Lulu and then reprice to make a profit, I'm good with that.  I'll have to check with Cram.

And I'm still sending all the money I make from the CTC to Faust for server costs.

I think he might be interested, he wants some hardcopies to sell, especially of the PD itself.

I don't think there's enough to justify selling a print copy but, IMO, my "Converstations from Hell" series is about the best shit I've ever written. More or less the only thing that I'm actually proud of, writing-wise. So if anyone wants to include it or any part of it in any kind of anthology collection, I'd love to think that that was being profiteered for the purposes of paying for this server.

Do you have that bundled together as a single word file, and edited?

No but I can do that when I get back. Tomorrow I'm off for a fortnight round the Hebrides and Skye.

Cool. Having thought about some more, it seems entirely fair. Still not sure if I made any content, maybe one or two tiny bits, and some thing in the BIP that was formatted as a conversation might've got a speaker named "000" in it, maybe.

About Cain, I've been a littlebit absent the past week or so, did anything in particular happen, or was it more the end result of the general discontent he's been having with here and now that the PoMoPrince forum seemingly has taken off, kind of thing?*

* [a deep shame for writing horrible and hideous abominations for sentences like the one you just witnessed may be a partial reason for my own absence btw]

Im guessing it was just mounting frustration. Ill miss him but i really dont have the patience to maintain a presence on more than one forum. Lucky you guys i guess.

Also we price things incorrectly?

Also i dont see anything out of the ordinary from your sentence construction trip. Honestly aside from the fact that its common knowledge that youre dutch one sort of awkwardly phrased post you made and your noticeable accent i would never have figured you for a non native speaker. And i probably would have chalked up that one post to booze otherwise.

I'm fine with my two BUT I obviously cannot speak for all contributors so I'm guessing it won't happen.

I'm fine with my BIP stuff and/or anything else I've posted here being sold to cover server costs. And I'm fine with 50%.

For the official record, Cram is ok with repricing the CtC bought off Lulu.

I am 100% OK with the sale of any print copies of anything with my writing in it. Not keen on the sale of electronic versions of .pdfs that are already available for free, because that seems unethical... printed versions I am fine with.
