Today is the 135th anniversary of the day Crazy Horse learned about America™.
Just saying.
And in only 13.5 short decades, we have elevated the Red Man from his lowly natural state of nomadic savage to his currently respected and feared status as the guy who sells the cheapest cigarettes and runs casinos outside of Vegas.
I sure hope they're grateful.
[[ this has been sarcasm. Every time I'm feeling especially Ameriproud™, I just think about what happened to the Native Americans, and how they still live on "Reservations," a century and a half after we started wiping them out in the greatest successful genocide in Human history. That seems to clear up any lingering confusion about what a great country this is. ]]

Yes. Pic sums things up perfectly. The artist only lived to about forty five (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Bad_Heart_Bull), BTW. Link doesn't say how he died.

That's about the average life expectancy of an American indian male.
Today still? :(

Eh, I think it's higher now, with a significant leap within our lifetime. But still shitty. And American indian males are still more likely to die of murder than any other demographic.
That's because they are a savage and backwards people, who should never have come to this country in the first place.

And replacing alcoholism with meth-addiction isn't really helping matters on that front. I've got a couple of friends with res privileges who avoid them now as a result of some nasty close calls.

Meth is hardly exclusive to Native Americans...But given the whole concept of a "reservation" as "built-in mayhem", I can't imagine how bad it would get with some of the poorer tribes.
From first-hand knowledge I can report that "really bad" doesn't even scratch the surface.

We live in the state that brings you "Faces of Meth" and also Seaside. In my psych class this term, one of the exercises was stereotypes, and we were each assigned a race/ethnicity that we were not, and then had to get up in front of the class and blurt out all the stereotypes you could think of. I was enlightened and surprised by many of them (Many Hispanics evidently have a stereotype of white people eating a lot of pizza) but the one I wasn't surprised by was the association between white people and methheads.
But yeah, some of the reservations, especially the really poor coastal ones, can be baaaaad.
Crappy commodity food and trying to fill up the family with stuff like frybread, don't forget that one.
As far as I know about the Connecticut tribes (Mohegan and Pequot) they do pretty good for themselves because they each have their own huge resort casinos.
The Narragansetts in RI, on the other hand...always get the shit end of the stick. They shouldn't have eaten the Pilgrims.

There's something inherently wrong with the institution of the reservation. I can't quite put it into words, because it keeps sounding like something Ronald Reagan would say, rather than what I mean.

Because it's a fancy name for "animal preserve."

Oh, yes, of course. Not saying you're wrong...It's just that the trap was built a century and more ago. It is of no use to say what we shouldn't have done. It is more important to think about ways of fixing it without making the problem worse. Simply ending the reservation system, as Reagan wanted to do, would compound the problem, not end it.

Truth.
I have no solutions... However, gotta say, I'm not wild about the trend toward building megacasinos... Look deeper, most of the profits from those casinos aren't even going to the tribes.
