...On another board, that the fact that I identify myself as "human" first, and everything else second, means that I am a racist.
:|
I can see the idea that people who say "I don't see color" can be viewed as SPEAKING FROM THE P-WORD, but that's not what I said. I said that I identify as "human". Apparently, being "human" implies some sort of privilege with regard to race. This in turn implies that the person I was talking to thinks not all races are human.
Conclusion #1: The person I was speaking to is a moron.
Conclusion #2: The teabaggers and their allies win again, as the liberalizing factions trash each other in an attempt to show who the "real revolutionaries" are.
Conclusion #3: Half of the things that have gone on with these discussions at PD appear to be part of a general meme, pre-packaged and shrunk-wrapped.
No, you're worse than racist, you're speciesist.
Which incidentally, is a great position to take when trolling, because you can tie people up in all sorts of hilarious arguments about IQ and non-human status and agency. I fully recommend it.
The need to have a problem to fix. Once its fixed what do you do? If we get rid of the concept of race then what do antiracists have left? Plenty. They dont want that though. It means more work to do.

Actually, it's just more of the factionalized competitions to show who is more "progressive" or "enlightened". What it says is "I AM MORE ENLIGHTENED THAN YOU, GET INTO THE PACK AND LISTEN TO ME."
It's also prime troll bait.
I now have the person telling me that I am as bad as Bull Daley. No shit.

BONOBOS DON'T HAVE RIGHTS.
EAT THEM FOR BREAKFAST.
Bonobo suffrage now!
WHY ARE YOU FIGHTING FOR BONOBO RIGHTS?
Polar Bears have it way worse!
BONOBOS ARE ALREADY PRIVILEGED AND NOW YOU JUST WANT TO CONSOLIDATE THEIR PRIVILEGE WITH YOUR PRIVILEGE SO YOU CAN STEAL MORE PRIVILEGES FROM THE UNDERPRIVILEGED
Jokes aside, what's happening here is that the argument legitimately made by Nigel & a few others here on PD with regard to the statement "I don't see color" has been reduced to a soundbite that is now used to promote exclusionary thinking all over the web.
Saying "I see myself as a human first, everything else second" is NOT the same as saying "I do not see color".
The thing is, arguing for species equality is rationally coherent, if practically unfeasible. As an argument, it rests on some extremely solid theoretical and ethical foundations, which are hard to argue against without also excluding a portion of humanity (usually the mentally deficient).
As such, it gives you pretty much an unassailable position to preach at people, without any need to live up to the expectations it involves.
So, like I said, perfect troll material.

I think it's a better way to express what "I don't see color" is trying to say. Either that or I misunderstand what it means.
Even St Mae has jumped on the party train.
Looking at the dates on some of these posts, I am now convinced we were invaded by an ism.
Slow on the uptake here, but I'm not sure precisely what their objection IS. Are they trying to twist it into a pro-assimilation thing?
Do they even HAVE a rational objection?

I think the idea of privilege as a filter is valid as hell. I think the idea of using it as a club against everyone that has privilege, regardless of their actions or beliefs, is also a form of filter. It's easier than thinking.

It is. It's another version of You People.
THAT!
I generally loathe the idea that lack of a privilege entitles you to reverse it in your favor.

It sounds like the flipside of the Dawkins fallacy now that I think about it.
