Title: The enduring symbol of the American occupation of Afghanistan...
Post by: Cain on December 14, 2012, 05:43:45 AM
Behold your colonial legacy, America, and despair:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/dec/12/kandahar-airfield-poo-pond-mission

QuoteThe so-called "poo pond" at Kandahar airfield is one of the few parts of the US and Nato mission in Afghanistan that everyone agreed should go as soon as possible.

A lake of sewage sitting on the indisputably grim-looking intersection of All-American Boulevard and Louisiana Road, it holds the waste produced by 30,000 people using hundreds of portable toilets.

There are few places on the sprawling military camp where the desert wind doesn't carry an occasional whiff of its contents, and locals and soldiers alike were looking forward to the day the smell would finally be removed.

But plans to drain it this autumn have fallen apart.

I can't wait for the future archaeologists to find that one.

"I love the smell of fecal lakes in the morning. Smells like... Victory."

Disappoint that there wasn't any pictures in TFA i did a quick GIS, which i heartily recommend.
also, i saw an article indicating that it is a widespread and widely believed rumor that a special forces guy went scuba diving in the lake on a bet.

That beach towel is great. The bio hazard mark is a wonderful touch.

I suspect that the "mid 2013" closure may not occur. I wonder, how big will it have to get before the practical option financially is just to abandon it? People are still cool with toxic shit just being abandoned right?

we will eventually foot the bill for Halliburton or the likes to embark on a 'humanure generation and distribution' contract where they pump the pond into a procession of honey trucks and spray the shit over the afghan countryside for an exorbitant price.
