No shit, saw the tv series, and listened to the radio one as well and both were severely depressing.
>shrug< Was sitting in the theater today to watch National Treasure and they had a preview for it.  Between my mother and I we laughed loud enough to get kicked out.

The radio show rocked when you were driving home late at night
in the late 1970s (or so) from making sales sales in three or four
states and you flipped around the radio dial (because you didn't
even have a cassette player in your car) and you discovered this
really weird radio play that almost caused you to drive off an
overpass because it was so damn strange and funny.

Sales calls suck. So did the tv series. I have some of the
radio play on cassette. It still rocks.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!  IF YOU HAVE NOT YET READ THE BOOKS, DO NOT YET READ THIS POST!!!!

I know that Mos Def is playing Ford Prefect, and I'm ok with that, but does anyone know who's been cast for any of the other major roles? and is it just covering the first book or is it condensing the entire series into one movie, with the whole Trillian vs. Trillian at the end?

I heard it's being made by Disney. This can only mean one thing...

Tom Hanks as Arthur Dent, and Zaphod Beeblebrox, and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, and Ford Prefect too.

dunno about the rest of the cast, but if they got anyone other than Johnny Depp to play Zaphod Beeblebrox, I will have to firebomb someone...

The thing that always pissed me off about Rage was that their lyrics just kinda went on and on, without any sort of thought as to the flow, like they were reading their high school essays set to music...and also, that guy screamed too damn much, and not in a COOL way. And it was like, obvious rants, played-out superficial political rants.

I much prefer SOAD for when I wanna get my politics on....better lyrics, better singing, they're just BETTER and they don't present every.single.song as some kind of "statement."

"manufacturing consent is the name of the game - the bottom line is money, nobody gives a fuck!"

in the interest of brevity, I'm just gonna say that I agree wiht both of you for the last few posts...although, Tool maybe should have called it quits before they released the same song under 14 different names on one album (Lateralus)...but they still rule...and so does SOAD, and I also like the first album the best...you two should REALLY check out Refused...they're unbelieveably good, and they deserve a little exposure...the 2 albums you'll want to hear are "the shape of punk to come" and "songs to fan the flames of discontent"

Title: Uh-Oh
Post by: on November 30, 2004, 06:58:44 PM
Drawing back on my early highschool years of listening to Tool, I still feel that ?Ünima was definately their peak musically, Opiate was crap, and Undertow had maybe two or three songs that I felt to be genuinely good. Anymore, I cant get over how "angsty" Tool really sounds to me, but I can still go back and listen to ?Ünima without any prejudice against them for their fan-base, Undertow is just too simplistic overall, and Opiate is pretty much the same case as Undertow... only more-so.

I dont care what Turd, or Hotsuma, or anyone else says...

I am the single most pretentious music snob to post on this forum, hands down.

You're a graduate of berklee? Thats kind of impressive.

I think I know how this is going to turn out, but I'm willing to go with it.

My Credentials -
- Has been in a band with a drummer who used to play back up for BB King
- Opened for an indie band that made their own instruments out of sheet metal
- Listens to japanese noise music, a variety of japanese noise music (not just merzbow)

You gave me three, so I give you three. Although I must say, you definately have a degree of professionalism (IE work experience/diploma) that I lack, however... I assure you that I make up for it through tenacity, and obscurity.

::Cracks Knuckles::

-Plays in a band with a guitarist who traded leather jackets withJohnny Thunders
-Played in a band who opened for Jesus Lizard
-Got high with Thurston Moore & Kim Gordon
-Considers Merzbow & Masonna fairly good examples of Noise, but prefers Non and old Throbbing Gristle.

I'll try to keep up, old-timer.

-Is not a fan of Sonic Youth but was pointed and laughed at by the guitar player and vocalist for Walls of Jericho for being too high to open a door-
-traded shirts with Atom & his Package-
-had Anal Blast play a show in his basement. (while other bands have played here, that show remains fresh in my memory)-
-Thinks that Merzbow and Masonna are fairly good examples of noise, but prefers Kazumoto Endo and Gore Beyond Necropsy. Throbbing Gristle, while certainly noisey, tends to be accredited to founding (not simply belonging to) the industrial genre, and Boyd Rice seems to fit comfortably into that spectrum. Its not unknown for genres, by their very natures, to overlap... so in all truth this isnt very unusual.-
Title: Uh-Oh

oh, you kids today...

-drank whiskey with Alex Hacke and NU Unruh of Einsturzende Neubauten while discussing the finer points of belt sanders as percussion
-talked sex & politics with Ian MacKaye
-Strongly agree when John Cage said "people who are truly interested in sound tend to be interested in the small ones," and so consider the middle works of Eno and Stockhausen to be precursers to the Noise movement in general.[/u]
Title: Uh-Oh
Post by: on November 30, 2004, 08:31:59 PM
I'm definately getting outclassed here...

-Sang Happy-Birthday to Simen Hestnaes (ICS Vortex) when he was touring with Dimmu Borgir-
-Had his birth certificate signed by Trey Azagthoth, to date the only autograph ever requested by a musician, and most likely the last-
-could understand how one could consider Eno to be a definate precursor to the Noise movement, wasnt Eno among the first to really explore Reel-to-Reel tape flanging?-
-Feels, however, that Musique Concrete is the true precursor to Noise music-

(edit: in reference to Musique Concrete, I just caught the stockhausen reference... touche`)

-Opened for GWAR, & grossed them out when I split open my elbow on the first song and bled for real all over the stage for the rest of the set (GWAR wouldn't go on until it was cleaned up)
-drank beer & spoke with M Gira & Jarboe (Swans) on the effect of delta blues on their music
-Considers John Coltrane's last major works (OM, Ascension, Selflessnes) far greater accomplishments than A Love Supreme

I am going to throw in the towel, in all honesty you had me last round... but I wanted to keep it up, I've been enjoying this immensely. In all honesty, though, you got me almost entirely based on your experience as a music snob... whereas myself, am little more than a fledgling music snob.

Though, It'll be a rare day that you see me let anybody pat themselves on the back for music snobbery while discussing the finer points of System of a Down.

Here's what I've got going for me.

-A comprehensive knowledge of modern music history, specifically underground music-
-A house that until recently did a lot of shows for a lot of touring bands-
-A general distaste of conformity in music, even amongst non-conformists-
-Some knowledge of basic sound theory-
-a handfull of crazy ideas concerning binaural rythyms and neurolinguistic programming-

Anyway, I gladly concede the title of grandmaster over to you, perhaps someday I'll be able to take it from you.

and while you both have me out-snobbed, and out-obscured, I have you beat when it comes to hte "I did such and such with so and so" competition...you see, my band (who has opened for the Accused, too, BTW) was supposed to open for Dee Dee Ramone except he died 2 days before that show...we were the first show not to get played due to his untimely demise...also, when I was in NoLa once, I bribed my way into the House of Blues during soundcheck and told Jack Black I was a music reporter for a west coast paper who's vacation happened ot coincide with their show, and we ended up drinking heavily for several hours....when I lived in Michigan, I used to run with CTYC...and, I shagged the singer for Birdsaw when I lived in Mammoth, CA....

top that.

I follow Sugarhole every where they go.

I have been at every performance and every recording session.

And If I can get my daughter away from the mike and the keyboards long enough I will even record with them rather than just record and mix them.

Pop Divas can be pretty demanding at age three ( ok so I'm a little early. sue me.)

really though...I ate doritos and dranks pepsi with ice-t and body count on the tour bus.

had coffee with the posies( i'm sure turd can tell you how easy it is though)

had a nice discussion with neil young about the fucking sewage treatment plant here in wenatchee.

Had a bar-b-q meal with willy nelson also here in wenatchee.

Pissed in the next stall from gibby haynes... this man is one of those bathroom talkers. it was fun we even shook each others hand with out washing them first... he one upped me pretty good... he licked his hand afterwards... this man really likes his cars let me tell you.

played chess with george the animal steele.

sat along the train tracks and shot bottle rockets off with drew berrymore( you know wenatchee is kind of a cool town)

Played with dry ice in the parking lot of the east wenatchee top foods with king buzzo.

missed a phone call from the Ween boys but had the message they left on tape for me ( my x threw it out... It just sounded like a prank call to her...)

Drank beer with sweaty nipples ( the whole band... they liked my roommates and my blend of tobacco and marijauna it had a lot more tobacco than pot but after a few j's you can feel a slight buzz hitting... besides we were drinking , fuck off)

... yawn...

and really not that impressive... some real cool people if you catch them at the right time and attitude.

case in point... after a long nights show at the gorge poor mister neil young winds up at one of our local hotels ( this place is known for housing artists that play at the gorge but we still kind of stay away... you know a respect thing)
and several things are missing from the rider.... she gets hell from him or one of his crew( she was pretty upset when she told this story... even to this day her husband says" I don't know who said what to her but it made her pretty upset) for like a hour and a half.

abyways david and I go to pick her up in the morning... were waiting outside and I'm in my sonic youth t-shirt from the concert i saw them play with neil young... he goes to the bus and comes back by us and goes back into the hotel... a few minutes later he comes back out and says" you seen sonic youth in concert?"...

"Sure did but was more impressed by the fact that the headliner proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks"

He laughs at this and the wind picks up from the east.... seweage treatment plant...

neil says" what the hell is that?"

we both tell him.

"And they still manage to book this hotel"

david" well you know I don't think they advertise that fact when they pitch the hotel to the ... tour agents?!?!?"

" yeah well let me tell you this staff here isn't that good either"

" what happened?"

now i'm too busy noticing davids pissed tic start twitching to really liste to what mr' young had to say... I was about ready to jump between the two of them if you know what i mean....

but they got it fixed so I guess it's ok ... so what are you guys doing down here anyways... you didn't try to talk with me and your not asking for my autograph.

david " well I'm actually her to pick up my wife"

" oh" neil pauses for a long time and we all stand in scilence... " so how far away is that sewage plant?... come over her with me... my names carl." I put out my hand... he shakes with me david goes inside to talk to his wife.

I take him to the other side of the hotel point accross the railroad tracks at a building and say " see that?"

" yeah"

"thats the sewage treatment plant"

Isn't that a bit close to the hotel ... did they put it in after the hotel was built?"

" no sir... the hotel was built here well after that thing had been put in"

" what made someone think that it was a good idea to put a hotel that close to a sewage treatment plant?"

I point to the next building over " the same type of person that thinks it's a good idea to open a restaurant near one"

He really starts to laugh... for quite some time... hard and loud...

Well I got to get back but if you wait I'll send someone down with something for you and your freind....( we wound up with four tickets to neils second concert at the gorge later that day...

we sold them and bought some pot.

I mean i've met more people but these are the ones who's stories i like to tell... because it's fucking wenatchee...you wanna hear more about this town ask sssbella.

I carded Chris DeGarmo from Queensryche and wouldn't let him into the club until he went to his car and got his ID...and they were playing that night...UBER-PWN3D!!!

Wenatchee's really not that cool.

but our location brings some wonderful guests.

I have a freind that watches the house next door to a member of guns and roses.

He doesn't like loud parties.

It's really one of the good things in life to say that you were at a party that had a member of guns and roses call the authorities in to stop...

We were playing sink with a car body and potato guns.

it took a lot of work to get that thing to float.

and then we started shooting the hell out of it.

then the sherrif's department showed up.

we got fined and all that stuff.

fuck that party hard persona... it;s a show.

He couldn't hang.

his name is left out of this post because the fucker is a git.

I'm guessing you're talking about Duff...he is kind of a dickwad...he's my guitar player's first cousin...we tried to get him to help us get off the ground (at a time when he wasn't busy with any of his own projects) and he kept telling us to send him a demo, and we sent him like, 4 of them, and he just kept blowing us off...I'd have chalked it up to us sucking, except that once we did start getting some shows and stuff, everyone seemed to really like us...the couple times I met him he seemed kinda OK, but he definitely thought he was doing us a favor by even deigning to talk to us....

I was licked by Maynard from Tool, got shit faced with the lead guitarist of Snake River Conspiracy, and saw Michael Jackson at Disney.  Thats about the extent of my rock star fiascos.  My mom on the other hand has smoked weed with Rolling Stones, puked on Sid Visious, drunk drunk with the Ramones, and saw Billy Idol naked.

I love that woman.

Oh yeah, and I got to see Eddie Veder chased out of the Hurricane by a screaming mob...which personally was the best.

Warwick Davis - Marvin the Paranoid Robot
John Malkovich - Humma Kavula

Yeah, but if Chris DeGarmo was playing with them that night, it would have been back when people actually knew who they were.

unfortunately, in Seattle, people always know who they are...we've got a lot of rock stars to be proud of 'round here, but those guys are one of our few points of shame...along with Kenny G and Candlebox....

I remember when a friend of mine called up Mike Dapen (aka "Dapose") from the Faint.

"Is this Dapose?"
"Hey, remember when you were in Lead? That was awesome."

Oh Mike Fromlead... what the hell happened!?!

BTW: Conor Oberst is a tool.

Reminds me of the fastest interview I ever did.  It was with Soul Asylum, around the time of Grave Dancers Union.  It was over the phone, & went somehing like this:

"Hello, is this Dave?"
"Yeah."
"Good to talk to you.  Ok, first question:  When did you first realize you really suck these days?  Hello?  Hello?"

Warwick Davis as Marvin? That's gonna be one short android... :) But I like dwarves, so hey, cool. Just so long as they don't cut my favorite Marvin lines, I'll be happy.

I'm surprised this is a Disney film, the cast seems too diverse to be typical Disney fare.
