That movie clip freaks me out.

Squid, what sounds are your trigger?

I left messages on 3 different psychologists lines. Whoever calls back first, wins. That's how it is huh? Need appointment, leave message?
Shitty.

I made a list of trigger sounds (many I'm embarrassed about) but let's be honest here, this whole thing is kind of self humiliating.
I can't even eat dinner at the table with my family.

triggers include (but are not limited to):
mouth, nose and throat sounds:
smacking, chewing, swallowing, mincing, P's, S's, Th's, whistling, eating, hissing, crunching, sniffling, snorting, nose blowing, sneezing, phlegm, coughing, clearing throat, other thick goobery sounds.
clicking, tapping, rhythmic thumping, drumming, banging, kitchen sounds like pots and pans, silverware or ceramics.
singing (on or off key), humming, mispronunciation of simple words, laughing, heavy breathing, sighing, heavy slow stepping (clop clop clop)
rubbing hands/feet together, panty hose of fat legs rubbing, fat people talking about food, people mumbling at me or whispering, engines revving, heavy trucks, beeping while backing up, high pitched shrill voices, birds singing or screeching, dogs barking or whining, all sounds from children or babies: crying, laughing, talking.Children actually make me flee.
crumpling/crinkling, messin around with chip bags for too long, stammering, stuttering, tires screeching, cell phone notifications and other beeping electronics, sirens, flashing lights, phones ringing, loud motorcycles.

I've even noticed visual and other triggers like watching people eat, spitting, leaning back in chairs on 2 feet, fox news and the taste of artificial watermelon and apple

I have no idea why these things bother me so much but the shit consumes me. It's like my whole life is filled with rage, anger, frustration, wanting to scream or beat the hell out of people to make them shut up.
My blood pressure is getting out of control and so is my behavior.
This stuff all makes me want to die. every day.

But I never knew there was an actual thing for this. A name.
I always just though I was an unreasonable, raging twat.
Just found out I'm not alone.

The sound of someone slurping with a straw sends me right up a fucking tree, so I feel your pain.

This is my life, but not because of straws.

It's because people acting stupidly drives me batshit.  Even - especially - when it's me doing it.

Well, he can limit his music to his headphones or his room and I can shut it out. I don't want to do or say anything to discourage him from being creative.

However he's the loudest food smacker, foot rubber, shoe stomper I've ever heard and it makes me feel horrible that something as simple as him walking across the house make me want to choke the shit out of him. Poor guy. Just tryin to walk and here I am picturing murdering him.
i feel like a jerk

Sound like shit Squid. How long you had this? Maybe it's not curable, like I think you mentioned on FB but most psychological things become at least a bit less annoying and a bit more manageable once you become aware of it in the context of a pathology.

Since I can remember. My pillow used to keep me awake when I was small. Crunching all up in my ear.

I think it may be hereditary as well. I recall things my mom used to say about noises people made (my grandmother mincing) and watching her cringe when she spoke, and understanding.

Mr Squid discovered this and was like "omg this is YOU" and made me read up on it. the more I read the more I laughed, till I cried.

Some of that shit does it to me. I can't stand people smacking food, or sirens if they get too close.
A lot of this neurological stuff is poorly understood - I can't wear clothing with stiff tags, either, it feels like pins sticking in me and actually leaves a red rash, but I don't fit the ADHD profile.

Where's Nigel? She's usually got insights into these things.

I'm gonna wrote a paper about your things, Squiddy, it's fascinating! I have a sensitivity to sounds, especially repetitive sounds, and I cannot deal with listening to someone eat in an otherwise quiet room, and oh my god the TV being on all the time and cell phone blinging (it drives me fucking CRAZY when someone has their phone on them and it keeps making noise... turn off the sound, fucko, you keep checking it constantly anyway and there are other people in the world who don't need to know you got a fucking text) and all that shit irritates the fuck out of me. But nothing near the level you describe, and plus I like music.

Sensory sensitivities often coexist with ADHD but also occur independently of it. Sometimes they're related to sensory integration disorder, which is very poorly understood and may or may not be related to autism spectrum disorders and/or synaesthesia.

Funny you mention that, because my son has a wide scatter of symptoms that present kind of like Asperger's, but he's been tested and he doesn't have it.

When he was little, the doctors used to ask if he was sensitive to tags...he's not, I am. I never thought about it until they started asking me that and I found out it was related to funny wiring. Maybe some of us are like carriers, I don't know.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/06/health/06annoy.html

Very much this article. I used to yell at my brother when we were younger and it still drives me crazy. At work, I've had attorneys call to talk to my boss or leave a message and I can hear them eating over the phone and HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU DO THAT. I hate the sound of ME eating, but I can at least try to control how much noise I make. But there's no nice way to say JESUS FUCKING CHRIST CAN YOU NOT CHEW SO FUCKING LOUD and it's not something I want to start a fight over. But even last night my bf was driving me crazy and I had to get up and wash dishes in the other room until he was done eating so I couldn't hear anything. My reaction/lack of tolerance for it is getting worse. I either have to do this

QuoteAs a young adolescent at the dinner table, Heidi Salerno tried to discreetly plug her ears or chew in sync with others so her own chewing noises would drown theirs out.
or sit in a ball of irrational anger until it stops.

That and at work if I'm not working on a dictation or on the phone, I need to have music on or the clock ticking, lights buzzing and computer humming would drive me crazy. But that might not be the same thing.

Well, at work people call me for stupid shit, when I'm trying to fuck off here.

At home, people from work call me for stupid shit, always when I'm busy doing something.  Sometimes when I'm busy doing something with somebody, if you catch my drift.  Then they get all pissy when I don't answer or call back for an hour or so.

It's to the point where, when my phone goes off, I go into full potato Tourette's mode.

But again, that's learned behavior, not what Squiddy is talking about.  I get the same thing she gets, but only when people slurp on a straw.  And sometimes when my FiL saws through his food and his knife rasps on the plate.  WTF, man!  It's a steak, not a redwood!

The straw thing is so bad that I have to leave when people do it.

Food-smacking gives me visions of what would make that noise in someone like Eldora's crack and other random horrors.

Food smacking doesn't bother me at all.

One thing that DOES bother me, though, is people interrupting me while I'm typing.  Even if they're not being rude.  Drives me bugshit, no matter what they're interrupting for.  Building's on fire, you say?  Fuck off, can't you see I'm busy?

audible chewing makes all my neck and shoulder muscles clench up, and feels very much like confinement/claustrophobia anxiety.
i think that's not too uncommon, and i'm always paranoid about chewing too loudly around people because i don't want to make them feel the way i often do.

Protip: have a couple kids and it drowns out every sound of mastication possible at the dinner table.  at least you'll be pulling your hair out for a new set of reasons. :)

Wow I'm the person you all hate for chewing noises.

I CAN'T HELP IT, I HAVE A BIG FUCKING MOUTH.  SHIT ECHOES IN THERE.

Every time I bite a potato chip, plaster crumbles from the ceiling EVEN IF THERE ISN'T A PLASTER CEILING.  If I eat cereal, you can watch ripples appear in your glasses of water.  Whenver I eat almonds the windows rattle.  GOD HELP YOU IF I EAT A CRUNCH BAR.

Apparently some 60% or so of sufferers also have tinitis (sp)
My ears ring in and out randomly and my mom's are so bad that she can't hear the squealing sound of her tv. Though I sure as hell can.

The problem I'm finding is the adrenaline. I can't keep this build up held in all day, it's causing other health issues and I'm losing my temper more frequently. Also the depression. Oooooh the self loathing.

My son was bothering me by blowing bubbles in his milk so I bothered him back by explaining exactly what it sounded like to me, which is the burbling noise a dog's belly makes when they start to cough, right before they "hornk" and vomit up a big steaming pile of dog food mixed with compost diggins and chicken crap.

Update:
Went to see therapist, he talked too quiet and wanted to talk about too many feels.
Kept trying to dredge up my past and talk about my parents.
Told him I wasn't there for that and needed to talk about anger management. In our next session we're going to learn how to "cope" with the "anger" before I lash out at people for making sounds.

On Saturday I beat up a sandwich and nearly broke my hand. It is purple and green. I will not speak of this to him.

I have another appointment next week. I doubt it will help and it may be my last.

Your wish is my command!

Who hasn't been annoyed by the sound of someone chewing with their mouth open, or slurping through a straw? These are pretty common irritants, but Joyce Cohen explores what happens for people for whom commonplace sounds can be more than irritants, but triggers for the fight-or-flight response. These people suffer from a poorly-understood disorder called misophonia, the existence of which I was alerted to by a friend who is a sufferer. In exploring the topic, I found this article by Joyce Cohen in the New York Times, written for an audience of laypersons.

This article seems fairly accurate, from what little I've been able to read on the topic, and I'm glad it was able to help give me a little more insight into my friend, and a better understanding of why she seems so often to isolate herself from other people, and why such seemingly tiny things like the sound of her husband rubbing his socks on the carpet result in loathing-fueled rants after the fact; fortunately, she's an extremely entertaining ranter, so she manages to make her plight seem entertaining rather than purely tragic.

Contemplating misophonia, it strikes me as a double-edged sword that this sensory condition is something that most people can probably empathize with, up to a point. Most of us can understand being distracted and irritated by the clicking of a pen or rhythmic squeaking of a chair, especially if we're trying to concentrate on something else. The other side of that is that it may also be too tempting to believe that this empathy means we fully understand it, and to dismiss it as being a mere irritant, or within the sufferer's control, when for them it triggers uncontrollable, overwhelming feelings of anxiety or rage.

The frustration sufferers must frequently experience when they are misdiagnosed or dismissed must be profound, and some of these people, like my friend, find that they have trouble functioning in certain environments because of their disorder. It isn't the loud sounds... like rock concerts and heavy machinery... that trigger their adrenal response, but soft, repetitive, usually commonplace ones. Can you imagine, if the dinner table or classroom or office was a panic-inducing nightmare of sounds? If you had the overwhelming urge to attack someone simply for chewing gum near you?

I'm reminded of something I once read, a humorous blog post about cat-sitting, in which the author was driven to what seemed like a hilariously overblown state of rage by the sound of his furry charge "smacking its stupid little kitty lips" while drinking water.  Now, I wonder if his loathing of stupid little kitty lips was due to misophonia, and whether I would have found it so entertaining if I'd known of the condition at the time.

This is awesome!
Sounds like you get it. Where nobody else does.

"Omg I hate chewing too! It makes me like, wanna die and stuff" no. no, you don't get it.

It sounds incredibly shitty, actually.

It causes an emotional self loathing spiral of hate.

First you're immediately irate, then usually you lash out. "Can you stop that?!"
This makes you feel bad for getting upset, then guilty for being angry at someone you might like.
That causes a feeling of self loathing and "why am I like this? why do I suck so bad?"
Which causes depression, which makes you hate yourself, then you hate everyone else for doing things that make you feel this way.

Funny how someone tapping their pencil on their desk can send you into a dark whirling vortex of murder suicide. Only it isn't funny at all.

Yeah, that actually sounds pretty completely unfunny and awful. Especially the part where you go to a professional for help and they don't get it, either.

Ugh. Yeah.
I have an appointment Thursday.
I'm sure he's gonna wanna talk about my parents and past relationships.
Not helpful.

I should just cancel.
Or maybe I'll give him this chance. Maybe he did some research. That's what they're paid for anyway.
I'm not too keen on the "I might have to report things if I feel like you're a threat to yourself or others" bullshit, kind of makes me want to clam up. I certainly won't be telling him that I damn near (or may have) broke my hand beating up a sandwich cause the insides weren't stacked correctly. Fuck.

They all have to say that. Fuck, *I* have to say that if I'm dealing with kids.

You should probably tell him about the sandwich, that's not the kind of threat they have to report.

However, if you're not feeling heard by this guy you should just get a new one. Not all therapists are good therapists. Also, you probably want a neuropsychologist, not a therapist. A psychiatrist might do if he has decent neuropsychology training.
