Originally, I was going to format the BIP 2013 digitally with a friend of mine. However, I have much more experience doing shit DIY by hand. So, I grabbed an old friend of mine who co-created a few zines with me, and we started tearing it up. I see this as a 'return to form' for Discordian literature, as well as a reaffirmation of my punk heritage. Now eat my shit, assholes.

But, seriously: We have a few more pages done than there are pics of, just wanted to give you some high-lights.
Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? This takes a long time to do, and is fairly resource heavy, so if anyone has a problem with it being done this way, say something now. I don't want to invest all the effort if people don't like the direction it's going.
Ohhh yes. I LOVE THIS.
Vote of Approval, Looks great.
Looking forward to the finished version!
Fuck yes! I started doing something like this for an Intermittens, but I was going for a hybrid digital/handcraft approach that was just too complicated for me to pull off, and ended up abandoning it.
I 100% approve of this! That looks awesome!
Awesome!
NOW GET IN ON THESE COOKIES!
Well, I'll take that as a vote of approval. the down side of this being that it will take a bit longer than I initially thought it would (each page can take quite a bit of time to create, and there's an estimated forty-some-odd pages to construct), but it should be done in a few weeks.
I'm very excited to see the final product, because I think most of the content is stuff that was written during my long time away from PD.
THIS IS FUCKING GLORIOUS!!
Shit yeah!
Looks good, man. Digging it.
Erisspeed.
Disappointed to be excluded again but thrilled and impressed with your work. It looks fantastic! I'm proud of you guys!
:mittens:
Kick-ass, dude. Props.

You're not being excluded, this project was open for submissions first under "Common Walls" and then under "BIP 2013" for something close to two years, maybe longer. It was closed for submissions months ago and declared ready for the design phase and has been stalled out there for a while. If you are into submitting for projects, keep your eyes open and check the project board regularly, I'm sure another project will be along presently. You have to be proactive about submitting, it's not something that happens passively. There's also a Discordian writers group on Facebook if you're not already a member there and you want to contribute to projects that might be a good place to join.
O FUCK YES.
Some more pages for those who were wondering about progress. It's getting down to the end of the semester, so I don't have that much time to work on it. Meaning, it probably won't be until after finals that this is 'finished.' Though, I am able to do a few pages (seven, in this case) here and there. At this point, Chapter 1 is 'done.'
This is Garbo's 'Exploitation Cycle.' Let me tell you, this looks way better in person than it does in this photo.

Yes. I want this.
Whatever happened to that two week timeline, home slice?
This is the cursed project. Swear to God.
Eh, he probably just got busy with school. He'll reappear.
I STILL MAKE, DO NOT DISSAPOINTED
Hey, so, I have six more pages done, I'm just having an issue getting pics of them from my phone onto my computer. "Lifers" by TGG is done, and the TGRR/Dok Howl "You're a Whole Different Person When You're Scared" double-whammy (two pages each) is also finished. Plus a flyer/advert thingy, which is a full page. Some of these new pages were not hand made, so to speak, and were done primarily on the computer, mainly because the kid who was helping me is not really helping so much anymore. This is not to say the pages didn't come out good, they just lack a little bit of the 'ransom note' flavor of the other existing pages.
And, yeah, school was a bit of a grind for a while there. But to be completely honest, I usually get a wave of 'seasonal depression' (that's the only way I can think to describe it) of sorts in the summer, which makes it really difficult to get motivated sometimes. Even though I know that just doing something productive like making a few pages for the BIP would likely make me feel better. But, anyway...
I'll get some pics of the new stuff up once I get my damned phone working properly.

Also, I think I may need someone to do the "Legal Stuff" page. I'm not familiar enough with copyright/left/creative commons/whatever to be comfortable doing it. All I would need is for someone to just type it out and post it here, I can cut & paste and slap it on the title page.
This is looking good.

I like this idea.
Ok, so I have three more pages done but my I'm having a little trouble getting the pics off my phone and onto the interbutts.
At this point, I have crossed the half-way mark (not counting front/back cover, contents and title page). Also, things should move a bit more consistently now that I'm in a groove. Don't know what I was thinking giving this a two week deadline, but...
Anyhow, there are a few things I could use a hand with (aside from the aforementioned legal page). I could use some original artwork for the front/back cover. I'm artistic, but no artist. That said, I could come up with something, but it would take a whole lot of time for something that would end up being sub-par.

We have some amazing artists here, but if no one here ponies up I can ask Wolfgang (who technically has an account here but has only posted maybe four times) because she is an absolutely amazing line artist.

By all means, ask Wolfgang. The entirety of the book is black and white, but I feel the covers should be in color. Also, I imagine the cover having a honeycomb pattern (it follows the motif of the rest of the pages) with one or two sacred chaos inserted into one or two of the honeycomb cells. Other than that, I haven't thought too much about it and I am open to anything that follows the look of the rest of the material. Also, the cover art does not need text, I can add the title myself later. Let me know what she thinks or if she's down to do it.

I am not a lawyer. I am not here to bullshit you. The contents of this book are the property of the people who wrote them, and you need them to give you permission before you use those contents in any manner not consistent with fair use and/or creative commons guidelines. Or we'll swing around your place with a van full of Boston hooligans, three or four pitbulls, and a chainsaw redesigned by a crazy person in Providence. No kidding here, your shit is royally fuckinged if that eventuality comes to pass. These are NOT sane and happy people. No. They are excessively Irish, and ignore everything they can't drink or punch; you qualify as both, in no particular order. One of them has a perversion that involves shagging industrial equipment until it explodes. That's the kind of people we're talking about, here...In fact, we, the authors, cannot be held responsible for the actions of our "legal team", as they are basically uncontrollable. There is nothing in their heads other than the first movement of Karl Orff's Carmina Burana on infinite repeat, and perhaps a pound or so of broken and horribly contaminated glass. So don't try that shit. Not kidding.

"Unacceptable. See me after class; bring 'the stuff.' A+"
I need to re-read it, but I'll try to come up with something. Gotta head to class right now, though.
Also, a quick 'where are we now/where are we heading'
I have about fifteen pages of content left to do. As of late, I've been doing around two to five pages per session, and doing about two to four sessions a week. That said, all the actual content pages will be done soon.
Things left other than pages with content:
Contents page: This will be finished last, once I know exactly what the order layout is going to be. I figure the table of contents can also double as the attribution page. If that's a bad idea, someone let me know
Front/Back cover: This will require a (preferably) full-color piece of artwork. I can add the title text myself, but perhaps someone else should write the back cover blurbs? That said, Nigel mentioned someone to do the art, not sure if she has spoken with her yet about it.
Legal: Seriously, I'm not doing this. The copy of the Chao Te Ching that I have has a legal statement that seems very specific to the Chao Te Ching, and I wouldn't even know where to start rewriting it to make it relevant to BIP2013.
So, in short, things I need from other people: A piece of original art that matches the themes set in the pages for use as covers, and a good legal-type statement for the title page. When will I need them? Within a few weeks, if possible, as to not slow down production any more than it has been.
I can also write an introduction. :lulz:
And, basically, after that all I need to do is meet up with my newspaper friend and scan all these bad boys into one awesome PDF. I'm figuring I'll host the final copy on Scribd.

As long as it can fit on a single page, it can be as many words as you'd like. But, best to keep it to two or three short paragraphs, I would think.

Well he did say one page of whatever spaced whatever font. They're typically two or three paragraphs. 250 - 400 words-ish. Unless you're writing a mini-essay type deal and then it can go as as high as the font is tiny. :P
F (circled) IS FOR "YOU ARE F-----", MISTER. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. SEE ME IN MY OFFICE AFTER SCHOOL. YOU HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO DO.
I have a foreword written in my head. Oh, my, yes. Unfortunately, I shall be busy until noon.
Then I will poop.
Or maybe not.
A lot of things come to mind when you hear the word "Discordianism", but most of those words are inspired by terminally stoned people who think the hot dog joke is still funny. This isn't what this book is about. This book is about seeing the world the way it IS, rather than the way you'd like it to be.
Some have called us "The doom & gloom discordians", or "The horrormirth crowd", or "Those horrible bastards at peedee", but most of those are on Facebook and can thus be safely ignored. The impression they have developed - that we are all horror and no mirth - is mistaken; we DO laugh, but it's a different kind of laugh. Not a healthly laugh, granted, but it's a laugh and that counts.
The reason we laugh is that the general level of chaos (and, not coindentally, stupidity) in the world has reached a point where it can only be described as "poetry in motion". It is a symphony of short-sighted thinking, SNAFUs, and visits from the Fuckup Fairy. Just last week, a Sussex police officer chased himself around for 20 minutes, because the CCTV operator identified
him as a potential burglar. So when we are criticized for not doing enough for Eris, we merely point out that anything we could do would be redundant. So shut up.
I am not going to talk about the authors of this book...They can, and have, spoken for themselves, as you will shortly see. Instead, I'd like to touch on the environment in which this book was written, principiadiscordia.com. PD was formed in late 2002, under the banner of the pinealists, and quickly melted down. By 2005/2006, PD was taken over by East Coast Hustle, and the truly creative period began.
To understand why this happened, you have to understand East Coast Hustle. He is a lumbering brute of a man who allows unhindered creativity mostly because being a forum Nazi would cut into his busy schedule of drinking Portland and stomping on lesser mortals. He is the absentee slumlord of our little community, and when he does come by, we are very careful to not allow his shadow to touch us. We're no fools, this is not our first rodeo.
In any case, some serious writing was done between 2006 and the present day, by members current and past, resulting in a half-dozen or so books and a quantity of pamphlets and leaflets that would make Leon Trotski's festering corpse weep openly.
The purpose of most of this writing is and was to assist ourselves in seeing the world with the fewest amount of filters. We are neither conservative nor liberal, at least in the modern sense of those two words, because both of those concepts are monstrously thick filters that don't allow you to see
anything. Nor are we religiously affilliated; our members represent every major Western religion, plus some knockoffs of Eastern religions that would make their founders gnash their rotten dead teeth in fury. No, we have no populist agenda, but rather a driving need to push your face into the poop you left on the carpet and call you a bad dog. Because you are, you know.
This is the part where an introduction would normally wrap up. The clock tells me it's 9AM, and that I have things to do. The pills tell me, "There are no clocks", so I shall continue just a little longer.
As you read through the horrible drivel and brain-damaged filth that follows this introduction, more than a few things you trip across will make you angry. They will offend your filters. This, of course, is the entire point of the exercise. Those filters you wear that tell you what's Good & Right and what's Bad & Wrong are bad for you, in the same manner that The Future is bad for you.
So we wrote this to help you with those filters, and to help you with The Future. We, ourselves, have abandoned both, and ran away to the late 1970s, and we only kept the Good Stuff. We would have taken you with us, but there wasn't room in the time machine for all of you, and frankly, we never really liked you anyway.
And here is the Good Stuff.
The Good Reverend Roger
June 26th, 2013
That needs to be the intro to everything, always.
Back cover to follow.
It contains all the
wrong values, spewed forth by the deranged folk at principiadiscordia.com, and isn't good for your health and general state of mind. The degenerates who contributed to this book
aren't on your side, and want to make you laugh at things that good folk,
decent folk won't even bring up.
The sort of garbage spewed in this book utterly justifies the intrusive nature of the present governing principles of most modern world governments...And if these governments had any sense at all, everyone who wrote this crap would be whisked away in the middle of the night to be handed over to thugs and body perverts at the sort of facilities that have made the CIA famous for their good manners and restraint.
Look, you and I know that you're a good person, and that you're just looking for
answers. Looking to see just what the hell is really going on. The truly evil part of this book is that the authors
hint at these answers, but really just give you tons of new questions. Reading this book will change you. Specifically, it will make you a mad person, and everyone else will crowd over to the other side of the bus. So put it down, jackass, because there are just some things you really don't want to hear.
Shit. Now I've got the Holies™.

Very nice. Now, the question is this: I have an 'editors preface,' an 'introduction' and a 'forward.' Which goes first?
Editor's Preface goes first.
Is there an Epilogue yet? I'm feeling something that might be an Epilogue.

"Foreword".
And it typically goes in as Editor, Foreword, introduction.
This is going to be amazing. I can't wait to see it. :)
Epilogue
Well, you did it. You got through the semi-lucid ramblings of a bunch of disenfranchised freaks struggling to navigate the fine line between philosophy and delusion in a society that is hostile to nonconformity. How well they succeeded? That's for you to decide. Think for yourself, schmuck.
You have some choices to make, now, about what you want to do with everything you read here. If you want, you can forget about it, and go back to your evening news and your teevee dinners and your pundits using-and-theming this whole thing to death, forever. You can live eternally in Tucson, where nothing gets any better and nobody ever dies.
Or, you can, y'know, not.
Before you go, I'll give you a piece of advice: Don't listen to that bastard The Good Reverend Roger. You don't want to go back to the past; it's a trick, and besides, we've already been there, done that. There's nothing left to see. No, come on ahead, and don't be afraid; I'm waiting for you in the Future.
The Future you demanded.

Fucking BRAVO. All of it.
ALSO, DIMO:
I think that I said before that I wanted to be attributed as Nigel Salt. SCRATCH THAT. Writing that made it painfully obvious that the only possible attribution is The Right Reverend Nigel.

Really sorry to not have posted in a while. I have been working on the BIP, and I have some pics to post later this evening. Things are getting pretty close to done, though the matters of cover art and a legal statement are still up in the air. I know this is taking a little longer than anticipated, but I promise, it will get finished. Bbl.

Some of these are pretty cool, but I feel like it would be cooler if we had one or two made specifically for the BIP. Either way, the front/back cover is likely the last thing I put together, so there's a little bit of time to make a decision about it. Really like the idea of a warning label, though.

So, what's left? Not much, but let's take a run through:
1: intro/outro pages. Will most likely be done this afternoon.
2: With content done, I can finalize the order and make a table of contents page.
3: Legal! I have a guy to help me with this, but if someone can at least give me the basics of what exactly should be covered by a legal statement, it would be very helpful moving forward.
4: once legal is done, title page can be made.
5: Front/back cover. Requires art. Any word?
But, yeah, this is very close to (FINALLY) being done.
Plus it's my birthday tomorrow :p
I have not heard from Ludwig about art. She agreed to do it, but I haven't heard a peep since.
She is a fantastic artist and I think her art would be perfect for this, I really hope she pulls through.
Happy birthday!
There's my first essay, providing that one is still wanted.
Officially on the home stretch. Post production should be relatively swift.

I have to say, holding this hefty stack of finished pages feels kind of good. We're not in the clear yet, but man, actual tangible progress feels nice.
:)
Looks awesome guys.
Ok, so things are basically at a total stand still until we get some cover art. I can't do the legal/attribution page without cover art to attribute to an artist. The only thing I can work on is a table of contents, but that's such a quick thing it's almost irrelevant.
I understand that Nigel has someone in mind, but at this point, if anyone has original artwork, no matter how obliquely or tangentially related to BIP2013, please post/link it. Please! I want this to be done so bad, and we are practically ONE PICTURE AWAY.

Why not? Might as well. It's better to have more to select from, and even if any given piece isn't used as the cover, it can be included within the text so it won't end up a waste of time for anyone.

I'll ask both of them, that should be good.
Good news update!
The final piece of content has been completed (My 'Editors Notes.' I'd post a pic, but I'd just as soon spend that time working on other stuff).
What's left? I need to finalize the order. This is mainly a mathematical task, I just need to group titles with an odd number of pages together to fit the two page spread.
Table of contents. Nice and easy once the order has been finalized.
Legal mumbo-jumbo. Just figuring a time/place to meet with my 'legal team.'
Title page. Pretty much requires the above to be in place. Once it's done, this will be no prob, bob.
Covers. I'm waiting to do these last. I want to make sure that anyone who plans on submitting something has the maximum time to get it done. If a cover hasn't been selected by the time the above bits are done, I'm moving to a plan B, which I actually have. Go figure.
Thanks for a;; the support/feedback. It's taken a loooooong ass time, but the end is in sight. Woot!
I asked Ludwig and she says that she is going to work on cover art TONIGHT.
I really hope she does. Her art is amazing.

Cool beans. I'm meeting with my legal guy on Monday, which means that, functionally, a week from then would be the 'deadline.'
Aside: post production is boooring.
Ok, so my legal guy failed me.
I would really like to have this thing finished before school starts back up.
Somebody who has any idea how to, please write a damn legal statement.
Please.
What kind of legal stuff are we stating, again? Copyright, Kopyleft, Creative Commons (and CC variations)... What are we trying to protect here?

I'm thinking "used by permission". That way the permissions or lack thereof stay in the hands of the original authors.
Ok, I could probably swing that.
You want it straight, or put through the buzzword filter?

Why not both? Plain, followed by "TRANSLATION FOR THE CUBICLE-IMPAIRED".
Cool. I'll get to work.

Thanks so much, man. Been dealing with getting set up for next semester, and I really want to get this done before school is in full-swing (more school=less time, and so on). This was a sore spot for me, and the source of some weird anxiety. I appreciate it.
Also, sorry if I have come across as impatient/harping about some of these things. I understand it's kind of old news, but I think the BIP2013 is a really good collection and I am dedicated to getting it finished.

I know how you feel. The last 2 weeks of MSY was pure torture.
Also, I am planning on doing a visual piece for the title page (possibly the cover, too, if nothing better comes up) using a bunch of the contributing authors avatar pics. I was just going to use which ever avatars people are currently using, but if anyone has an old avatar that they'd rather me use, then post the pic here, plz.

Sorry, I should have clarified; I'm using avatars precisely because they are, generally, not actual pictures of the people they represent. While you look quite stunning in this glorious selfie, I'm not intending on using actual photos of the contributors (photos are fine, just not of us). For instance, your current avatar is more what I'm looking for. Y'know, things that represent, but that do not resemble that which they represent, ya?

Hmmm I will have to think about this, because you definitely can't use my current avatar, it being rather definitely someone else's copyrighted art.

True dat. The more I think of it, it's going to be a nightmare finding everyone's preferred avatar. Not sure about this so much anymore. Any word from your friend (sorry, keep forgetting their name) about cover art?

All that's left, I think, is a cover. I'll tool something together.
After that, it's just scan these fuckers in and call 'em a PDF

It's ok, it's not like she was obligated to provide work, and I appreciate you asking her, regardless. I have one last idea for someone to ask, and if not, I'll have to come up with something on my own. No big d.

At this point, I feel safe saying that this will DEFINITELY be done within two weeks. And I think that's probably a bit conservative of an estimate.

Huzzah!!
There should be a book that's 250 pages of quotes and introductions about the book, and one page of book.
Everything is scanned in. Have to do some minor edits to the PDFs. This thread will be obsolete in a day or two.
Never mind. Turns out I have to rescan the whole thing :x I'll try to get to it tomorrow.

YES. In fact make the page a sentence and have it be as dull as possible. Then surround it with massively opposing views about its meaning and impact on society.
Also, Glad to see this finishing up. Kudos and such to all involved, it's a good thing.
