Would anyone like to join me?
I've done this on and off since the 90s. It's a good time, but I can't stay focused on it.
This looks interesting, how do you play? I don't know if I'll have time but it does look like fun.
Oh hey, that guy wrote "Jennifer Government". That was a good book.

You can join alliances, going the WA (like the UN) and make policy decisions every few hours.
Also it gives you stats and such.
My nation has a 1 in 10 people die of murder stat.
I kinda need to fix that...
My people die of old age, of being lost in the wilderness or by acts of god.
bungee jumping, old age and heart disease...

That game was fun but it gets REALLY repetitive after a week or so. I did used to enjoy subjecting my virtual citizens to the most capricious abuses of authority imaginable.
Ok, there are 3 of us.. I should maybe figure out how to form our own region.

http://www.nationstates.net/nation=peoples_republic_of_new_texas
We're the People's Republic of New Texas. We were a colony of Texas at one time, but because they refused to stop giving money to schools altogether we decided to secede. After all, we don't associate with no commies. We have a thriving economy that follows the golden rule of our patron saint, Saint Mitt: "Corporations are people, my friend!" The three leading causes of death in our little nation are heart disease, exposure, and old age. Not bad at all. Like I said, our economy is strong. Unfortunately the global community says we're seriously lacking in political freedom. But the people who said that are all socialist pigs out to punish success. What's wrong with wanting everyone to love their country? So join us immediately or face our wrath. After all, if you're not with us you're against us.

I think it's mostly just about checking in every day to solve two(?) issues. It looks very hands off unless you just really want to get involved in the forums there. I'm not 100% sure though.
I decided to make a second nation mostly out of boredom but also to see what it'd be like if I answered the questions more closely to my own beliefs. The results were fantastic:
QuoteThe Kingdom of Unorganized Territories is a fledgling, safe nation, remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Law & Order receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 57%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Pizza Delivery.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Unorganized Territories's national animal is the Koi, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Yen.
That's my kind of country.
So I decided to check NationStates one more time for the night. Apparently it changes the description of your nation every now and then (every time you refresh?). Well anyway, when I first made the People's Republic I made up this:
Quote from: Aucoq on April 22, 2013, 01:33:27 AMWe were a colony of Texas at one time, but because they refused to stop giving money to schools altogether we decided to secede. After all, we don't associate with no commies.
When I just checked it the computer-generated description had changed to include this:
Quote from: http://www.nationstates.net/peoples_republic_of_new_texasThe Colony of Peoples Republic of New Texas is a fledgling, economically powerful nation, renowned for its complete lack of public education
To quote the great philosopher George Walker Bush," Mission accomplished!"
The sad part of this is that I'm playing this as if it were a corporatocracy, making decisions based on whether or not it helps or hurts corporations and/or the ultra-rich without any consideration for how it affects the citizens, and as the People's Republic changes it starts looking more and more like the United States. :|
Just legalised euthanasia.
http://www.nationstates.net/nation=interzone
"The Disputed Territories of Interzone is a fledgling, devout nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 5 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Social Welfare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 61%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Arms Manufacturing.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Interzone's national animal is the Yeti, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Clip."
Tried playing it, got bored quickly.
Any game that does not have mechanics for conflict is of considerably less interest to me. I'd rather play Civ II.

This. What fun is there in a simulation that ignores the basic principal that governing, at all levels, is a struggle for supremacy?
Besides, NationStates isn't even a game, its a forum with overblown profile pages.

What the hell is a Schpøpel?
Schpøpel is a game in which two opposing players race on rollerskates toward a cylinder containing balls. The object of the game is to be the first player to the cylinder, grab a ball from the cylinder, and pop it by jumping on it, then calling Schpøpel. You are allowed to throw balls at your oponent, making it more dificult for them to finish before you do.

YOU TOTALLY MADE THAT UP, DIDN'T YOU???
What a horrible thing to do to balls.
Actually, I didn't
I remember a bunch of us did this back in 05 when I first joined this place. It gets kind of boring after awhile. Needs more splosions!

After a particular 4 hours of playing as Cult of Planet and getting overriden by Morgan Industries's air superiority, i properly deleted it...
It SURE has conflict!
This is my third time playing Nationstates. Actually, it was the first forum that I participated in too.
I ended up hating it because the game did get repetitive, and I hated the forum because there was just too much. UNLIMITED DATA and most of it boring. You couldn't keep up. And it wasn't worth it keeping up. This forum may be relatively quiet, but at least most things here are worth reading, you can keep up with it, and I consider most of the posters here friends. I've been here for what, 3 years? This is the only forum that I consider permanent, as far as my presence goes. Even if I gave up on Discordia, I would still come back here. Hell, I consider LMNO, and the Providence spags IRL friends at this point. Roger and Phox too. I met Roger once, but if I'm obviously having a shitty time of it, he will call me. I see LMNO as often as any of my non-internet friends. Up until Phox got busy, I talked to her a lot both on gchat and on the phone. I find myself missing Dimo, Suu, Richter, Luna and leln. So, I'll play around on Nationstates as long as you all are. After that, fuck it.
