Quote"It was hard to explain to a 9-year-old the complexities of why I was telling him that we had to quit," Miller said. "He told me, 'Daddy, it should be like church. Everybody should be welcome.'"
Miller said he then told Cody that the point of going to church is to seek forgiveness — not for being all-inclusive.
"I said, 'These people aren't asking for your forgiveness,'" Miller, 51, told NBC News in a telephone interview. "What they're doing is saying, 'this is what I am and you have to accept me like I am. I'm not coming to try to change.'

QuoteAaron Butler, the leader of his 8-year-old son Evan's Cub Scout Wolf den in Roseau, Minn., said he didn't explain to his eldest son exactly why they were walking away from an organization they loved so much, but he told NBC News that it was because of last week's controversial decision by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay youth to participate.
"It was a big disappointment. He cried for about 10 minutes because I told him that Boy Scouts were not honoring their own law," Butler said, referring to the BSA oath that he interpreted as barring gay people..
America's right wing nervous breakdown continues.

Wow.
While funny, it's pretty sad too. First kid's (the 9 year old/Miller) got the right idea (church, scouts, etc. should welcome everyone), but no, let's start driving the hate into him now. I mean, what is church teaching this kid - that God loves everybody or some shit? Blasphemy!
It sounds like that 9-year-old already has more wisdom than his father, and this will probably cement in his young mind that his dad is a bigoted idiot who lets his prejudices fuck shit up for everybody else.
It's not going to be "When I was 9 I had to quit Boy Scouts because of Teh Gays", but "When I was 9 my dad yanked me out of Boy Scouts because he's a homophobic asshole".

He'll probably yank him out of church, next, for not teaching him enough about bigotry and exclusion.
The miller kid might even be gay himself. His dad wouldnt know because why would you come out to an asshole like that?
What Nigel said. These people not only manage to estrange their gay kids, they estrange their straight ones.

Yup. Maybe a decade or two ago, social pressure coupled with Daddy Bigot's attitude would have probably pushed the kid into becoming Baby Bigot. Now, social pressure's totally going to be working against Daddy Bigot, and making for a Baby Fuck-You-Dad...as nature intended.

I was 9 in third grade, and for the first time, I had a close friend who wasn't white.
My dad made some racist joke, and all of a sudden I was ashamed of him.
....Lots of other good reasons to be ashamed of the guy, but that was the first time I snapped to.
