It all started when a county Comissioner posted a picture to his Facebook page with the caption "How to wink at a Muslim" showing a picture of a guy looking down the barrel of a gun.

A few weeks later, the American Muslim Advisory Council invites some guys from the Federal government out to explain the First Amendment, and what constitutes protected and unprotected speech. The local racist newspaper got wind of this, and posted a page one article encouraging people to come out and let their voices be heard.
Well, they did. They packed the room, leaving a sizeable crowd still standing outside. They heckled the guy for about two hours, screaming about how the feds were trampling all over their free speech, or whatever. I still keep hearing people saying that he told people they could go to jail for making "disparaging remarks" about Islam. So far, all I have been able to find, is that he said that threats are not protected speech. As far as I can tell, it's still legal to say Mohammed, Jesus, Ganesha, and Buddah all suck donkey dicks, and Presbyterians all eat babies.

Actually, the issue was twofold: One, that there is a higher rate of racism (and of poverty) among Whites in the South, and two, that stereotyping Southerners is just as bigoted as stereotyping any other group.

I've had my doubts that Tennessee was worse than average as far as racism, but it's probably just something in the back of my mind to make me feel better about being stuck here. Not sure, but it's possible that non-southern racists are drawn to the south, and my experiences with these people have skewed my perception of the rest of the country, making it seem more racist. I may not be the only one with this warp in their perception. I suspect it to be a wide spread complex amongst southern liberals. Somebody should do a study.
I've insulated myself somewhat from that part of the local culture. My workplace is pretty diverse. Less than half the people at my level are white. The manager is a black lady, but everyone above her, as far as I can tell, is a rich white guy, and I don't think they are from the south. California, mostly, if I recall. Our insurance package covers domestic partners, which amazed me when I found out.
I was, and still am disappointed with this bullshit. The Muslims have been here for decades, and I never heard a peep out of anyone about it until they tried to build themselves a nice building to do their thing in. Then it was all "ZOMG!! INVASION!!!!".
For some reason, it kind of caught me by surprise.

I heard a LOT of "peeps" from the time they started moving here in the 80's. The first time was when I was travelling with some then-friends and stopped at a hotel. There were some Indian women working there (and they appeared to be Hindus, not Muslims) and just when I was thinking how cool it was to see people from there, my so-called cool friends started muttering about "A-rabs", "dot-heads" and "sand n-s", and how much they hated them.

Taking the fight internationally may have been portrayed as a logical step based on the situation in the occupied territories at the time, but it had way more to do with the PLO asserting dominance over other Palestinian groups, using it's higher profile to get more recruits, funding etc.
