Title: There's an app for that!
Post by: Pæs on July 01, 2013, 12:19:43 PM
I'm teaching myself to make Android apps.

ITT: Suggest terrible ideas for apps and some of them may turn into actual things. I'll also post as I go about how my learnings are doing and am thinking of making Android versions of things like the choose your own adventure wiki as simple starter projects, maybe bundle Discordian reading materials into a single app.

Does anyone about these parts have experience with developing for Android? I'm at the stage where I plug my phone into my computer and make HELLO WURLD appear on the screen. IT'S ALIVE!

I've been building some apps with Icenium ( http://www.icenium.com/ ), which lets you build html/javascript apps for phone/tablets. Basically it just packages up single-page apps and has some built in source control.

As for an app - I'd like to see a thingy that lets you build sort-of-random playlists. Like, you can define a playlist that will always play a specific intro track, and then fork down two paths after that, with the second path having a couple of variations variations on tracks 2 and 4 which can be selected independently.

Tag line:  "There's a Fap for that."

App that "locks" your phone and displays what looks like a normal passcode screen, but nothing you enter works and the only way to close it is tapping a specific spot on the screen three times.

Similar, an app that, when you attempt to make a comment on Youtube, says "what the hell were you thinking?" and closes the browser.

I WILL MAKE AN APP WHICH PROVIDES ACCESS TO YOUTUBE COMMENTS WITHOUT THE DISTRACTING VIDEOS.

If I wasn't already a programmer the android.com app developing tutorial would break me.

The following is given without any definitons except to explain that an intent is used to show the app intends to do something:
QuoteIntent intent = new Intent(this, DisplayMessageActivity.class);

The constructor used here takes two parameters:

A Context as its first parameter (this is used because the Activity class is a subclass of Context)
The Class of the app component to which the system should deliver the Intent (in this case, the activity that should be started)

I love this idea.

For SRSBSNS apps, I wanted to make an app to help local musicians somehow, but my vision included going beyond "just an app." I was thinking it would be a combination of "find musicians to join your weird ass project," "connect with fans," and "flash the app at the door for a discount on cover charges at local venues."

This is brilliant.  You could even do the same thing with a live matchmaking app.  Like it alerts you when you're over say 80% compatible with someone nearby.

Yeah, they also have one that's called "Crazy Blind Date" where you can post that you want to meet up with someone and it will match you with someone and you will meet someplace WITHOUT EVER HAVING SPOKEN OR SEEING EACH OTHER'S PICS, so you can't even tell your best friend "hey, I'm going out with this guy I met on OKC, here's his profile, his name, and his phone #".

So if you end up raped and murdered, there will be NO LEADS AT ALL.

I want to make some kind of GPS drawing tool, allowing you to send pictures you drew on top of maps by exploring the area... but combine it with dérive (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9rive) somehow.

Maybe flag a random location and bring up an alert: OPPORTUNITY FOR AN AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE AT THIS LOCATION, GO GO GO.

Sometimes the authentic experience will be a meeting or being witness to a puppy or something. Other times the authentic experience will be disappointment.

Using the light sensor (I think android has those) make a my pet vampire game. Basically its just a cartoon picture of a vampire. If you bring your phone into the light the animation shows it catching on fire and it screams really loud.
Also you can never turn it off.

I was always rather inpired by Cow Clicker. It was meant to be a satirical stab at Zynga games, but then people actually started enjoying and playing it.

I'm working on a GPS-based classifieds app, which lets you set the sensitivity for distance you'd like to pick up ads from, say 50km and anyone in that range who has listed something appears on an ugly list of FOR SALE/WANTED TO BUY OR TRADE.

Categories will be decided by the users by something similar to the hashtag system, so suggested tags will be provided but it will be up to users to decide on their preferred tags and which tags ("used cars", "free", "pets") they follow.

Will also look at other uses for location-based text content, such as scavenger hunts or leaving invisible notes in strange locations. Need to investigate low-maintenance moderation or disincentive to spam the service, like a karma system or similar.

EDIT: Initially, I was thinking that the app would never reveal the precise location you listed an ad from but I'm considering whether "share location with interested party" might be a request people can make of your ad. I don't want to make it possible to lure hipsters to secluded locations with the promise of a vintage typewriter only to have them Nigeled.

I like this a lot

what I'd want - Following the current naming convention I'd call this something like Derivestr

You can upload (or link to) a piece of media - song, image, video, or text.

Wherever you were standing when you posted it -- that asset becomes associated with those GPS coordinates.

Other people can see that asset's location on a map, but not where it is. If they want to view it, they have to walk within 10 meters of that location and hit View.

You could associate a song with a particular place.

You could take a picture of yourself and send it forward in time to somebody standing on the same spot.

You could let people know you were there, or where you'll be. Post a vine of a little moment you wanted to share.

If you wanted to make it into a game, it could be gamified by awarding points for posting or viewing assets. Or maybe each asset could be up/downvoted like reddit, so you could have people competing for the official song of the street.

kind of like a noncompetitive version of Ingress

An app to gamify everything and win at life. Can take informatioon from all of your other apps and use it to credit you with LIFE POINTS. Want to challenge yourself to get up early? Apply a Gamify penalty to your alarm clock snooze. Go for a ten minute run three times a week? Tell Gamify when you're going and it will provide the framework to verify that you've achieved your goal and reward you with LIFE POINTS.

ALSO: Gamify for kids, like a Gold Star Chart, only controlled by parents through a web interface and accessed by the child through a mobile device.
Rewards once you complete enough chores! Select from a list of things your parent selected OR one of our sponsored reward suggestions!
Title: Re: There's an app for that!
Post by: Cramulus on July 23, 2013, 03:08:09 PM
That's a cool idea! So like, set custom triggers (read:goals) that will award points.

Like, I want to get in shape. So I tell the app to give me a small reward (+1) every time I do sit ups in the morning, a medium reward (+3) every time I go jogging, and a big reward (+5) every time I go to the gym.

When I do one of those things, I flip open the app and log my action, it awards points and eventually badges, etc.

You could save a set of these goals (call it a Quest) and share them with friends. You could invite people to join your quest party, and that quest consists of whatever you choose. The app would display the other people in your party and their level/achievements as well.
