...I just called the police on my best friend.
He was going to kill himself.
He still may kill himself after he gets out of the psych ward.
He may hate my guts for doing this to him.
...I'm going with my gut instinct.
He CAN get better.
He has to do the work, though. The same kind of work he assisted me to survive through.
...I am a ruthless, controlling bastard.
So shoot me.

Seconding Roger on the Not Evil. Hope your friend is okay xx

See...I'm violating his right to self-determination, aren't I?
I can offer some patronizing shit excuses like, he's not in his right mind.
He isn't in his right mind.
But he is in pain.
Severe depression is pretty fucking hellish.
The only justification I can offer is that over the last year, I saw him fuck off.
He needs to change his life, and he hasn't been willing to do it.
But isn't that his right? The die's cast, the police are there by now, I expect.

He isn't in his right mind.
If he isn't in his right mind, he can't possibly practice self-determination.
Echoing what others have said, I think you did the right thing.
Selfdetermination may be important but think of it this way: If he really wanted to off himself he wouldn't have put you in a position to know he was going to do it. He would have remained silent and just done it.
He put the ball in your court and you made the play. Whether he likes the play you made or not, his self-determination remains intact.
I hope your friend is okay.

Very good point.
...I know when I've been there, it's not that I really want to die, I want the pain to stop.
...So I do and I don't want to die.
I tried to An Hero when I was younger. You did the right thing and he will forgive you sooner than you think.
Update, Lou is being sectioned.
Funny, the English PD actually updates you.
I was expecting not to know for months if he was alive or not.

Probably was never mad. Many suicides need someone to take control (cops, for example). They can't exercise enough control to GET someone to take control, though, which is where friends come in (Hylie, in this example).

That's a happy and hopeful thought.
And it tells him somebody actually GIVES A FUCK.

He's my best friend.
I'm strong enough to survive him, and I will, this won't be the first person I've lost to suicide. He'd be merely the person I was closest to who did themselves in.
But I won't
want to live for a while.
...BTW, just because he's "in hospital" doesn't mean he can't find a way to off himself in there.
But there's also a chance he'll get help, too.

He got *some* help when in last time.
If he gets the same psychiatrist, I'm hopeful. She did decent work.
Ultimately, if he's really unhappy with what I did, it's not like he can't kill himself when he gets out, I suppose.
This all hurts so much. I try not to think about it all day, then at night I feel like my guts got ripped out. I wish my ex were gone so nobody were here to hear me screaming, because the idea of her blank and lying face looking at me in that kind of agony...No. No more of that.
WELLLLLLL....
I spoke to him on the phone. He's back in reality, thank goodness...
...And apparently his caseworker was having him sectioned before I called the cops anyway. And he was HAPPY about the both of us doing this!
I thought he'd be furious, he was SO determined to "go home."
Too, he told me that I had his permission to call the cops on him in the future! *GIANT RELIEF*
I think I will ask if it's ok to call his caseworker in case of an emergency, maybe? See if I can get the okay for that in the future.
.....
And then he told me about how the taking-into-custody ended up involving a SWAT team and probably six snipers...
When he goes off the rails...it's a bad, bad day.

Well that's all good news - at least none of the snipers needed to take a shot or anything. Deep breath. Have some whiskey. Crisis averted!

I sent an email thanking the police for showing restraint.
In the U.S. I think he would have been likely died in a hail of bullets, TBH.
It wasn't just the knives, the air rifle, and the hatchet... he also improvised a FLAMETHROWER...
:horrormirth:
...He's a nice guy right up until he goes into psychosis.
He was already under section while this was going on; thanks be unto his caseworker, who actually gives a damn.

Heh, well done in keeping him alive.
I wish him lots of moments of happiness and moar dakka. (not aimed at him)
You did good.
Yes, that worked out DA BALLZ. :) :) :)
Update:
They let him out, mainly because he's too good at finding sharps in the hospital, so they can't really keep him alive, I guess?
I don't know.
...I think he's going to kill himself, and I don't think it's in my power to stop him.

Nope, NHS. Cost-savings...He was already in for a while last year, they're tired of spending money on him, I think.
Edit: I think it's unethical. But I'm just someone who loves him. I don't matter.
...I can live through this. I will.
Couldn't they put him in a better psych ward? Or at least a better secured wing?
I mean granted, he required a SWAT team, but ah... whatever happened to straightjackets and padded rooms? It's not a great option but if you have permission to intervene in the future, the man must want, on some level, to get better and live.

Due to recent NHS funding cuts the mental health system is woefully under-equipped. We've had all sorts of bullshit with my sister on this.
That's terrible. I'm so sorry both your friend and you have to go through this.
