Today, I saw the videos you posted where you "pranked" teenage girls by running up behind them, grabbing them around the waist, and then running away with them while they were trying to get into VidCon. I'm one of the people who was instantly upset and disgusted by your behavior, especially after a girl screamed at you to stop and you laughed at her and refused, and then even more when three girls stood up to you and told you that it was wrong to touch girls without their permission, and you argued with them.
I, along with many of my friends, began discussing your video on Twitter. None of us had difficulty understanding how your "prank" was wrong. Or why it was upsetting. You, on the other hand, posted this tweet:

No, and that's common sense... startle a dog like that and it will bite your dumb ass! That's the thing that's getting me... there is NO WAY I can see rational people making the conscious decision to do what they did. It's on par with the drunk guy who sees a rattlesnake and says "watch this..."
And the whole "we can do whatever we want because it's a PRANK" attitude is sickening. Also, the lying about being on MTV. I hope they get into serious legal trouble.

The more I look at stuff like this the more it feels like the men involved cannot wrap their heads around the idea that women might be okay with or even seeking interaction from someone in particular and not them. I mean, it's what the short skirt argument boils down to: "she wanted to be noticed sexually by someone so she must have wanted sexual attention from me."

Yeah, that exact argument showed up in the comments section of the video. "Their boyfriends probably do this to them all the time, therefore it's OK for total strangers to do it to them".
I suspect that the men who think that way essentially see women as interchangeable nonpeople, and assume that women think the same way about men. Inasmuch as they think about women's motivations at all.

Yes, that seems to be what they are assuming; that women think of men as interchangeable nonpeople, because that's basically how they see women.

It would make quite an OK sketch for a tv show. Not great literature but an amusing enough play on words. The problem is that the boundary between TV and "reality TV" seems to have blurred what is acceptable. If this was done with actors a lot of the boundary issues would not exist. You can argue that the sketch would still be tacky and tasteless ( yep, I would argue that strongly) but I'm sure it is no worse than a lot of the trash that TV pumps out. The jerks who made this don't seem to have got to grips with the idea that you can't always do to the general public what you can do in a studio to consenting professional entertainers.

No its not cool to degrade actors merely for a cheap laugh especially female ones. Sadly that is pretty much the whole history of broadcast entertainment. What is interesting about the reaction to this stunt is that there is a new ethic in play. It will be interesting to see where that takes us. God forbid that it ever does lead to "Celebrity Drink Roofying" but you'd have to admit that as a species we tend more to the low-brow and tasteless than the high-brow and tasteful, so that may indeed be our tragic fate.

Absolutely. But some people haven't caught up with the parade yet. They (perpetrators) will learn or burn. One of the more interesting bits of the vid was the self possessed reactions of some of the young women. Thats a good sign, but a lot of them were still quite accepting of the prank.

I don't see that as a reason to stage the same material using actors.
It's going to be great to see how this thinking eventually deals with other cultures.
Brazil, for instance, does not have the most enlightened lookout on women and "pranks" on TV. Same could be said for Japan or a number of other places. Anyone got any ideas about how to spread a more modern view in these kind of cultures? I'd assume this to be kind of necessary as there is little point in having an equal society if you can jump on a short flight to Explotationville.
Fortunately in the case of Japan, if there is anything more retrograde than their attitude towards women, it's their attitude towards foreigners.

You're a 12-year-old Japanese boy being forcibly restrained by a large black man who is bound and determined to penetrate your ass. I would have been crying too.
