One of my employees is a young guy. His 23 year old girlfriend had a hole in her heart, which was just discovered a couple of weeks ago when she keeled over and almost died.
So Tuesday, she has surgery, and got it fixed. It was that microsurgery stuff. 3 stitches. She's better the moment the operation is done. They held her overnight for observation, but only as a precaution.
It was basically outpatient heart surgery.
So sometimes the future, you know, isn't so bad.
That's also gotta be scary as shit, almost dying that young.
Glad she's ok.
I heart modern medicine.
Thanks for that.
Mothern medicine is actually quite awesome.
My upcoming back surgery is the same principle.
Thanks for the smile.
It's one of the few benefits to constant wars, medical tech improves.
Another couple of world wars and we could all be immortal.

Microsurgery isn't, though, based on battlefield medicine. It's based on decades of work in the civilian sector, where medical and computational work meets.
That's awesome!
If you ever need to be reminded how lucky you are to be born in this time, think about how many times you would have died by now if you'd been born 100 years ago.

Isn't it? Outpatient heart surgery. No scars, no sawn ribs.
Yeah, the advances in medical science are amazing.
Shame they're totally inaccessible to most of the population!

This is a valid point. To be fair, I know little about the history of microsurgery and I've assumed there was a military interest/application with shrapnel/mines and various other potential hazards. Probably out of idiot optimism hoping that some of the defence budgets go to something productive (and positive).

His GF is on access (public health care).
For some reason, this fucked up state manages to feed everyone and treat them (at least for serious shit), even as they fuck everyone in the ass in every other conceivable manner.

No, military medicine works like this:
1. Stabilize the patient.
2. Whack off any limbs that have gone South of cheese (not actually necessary anymore, with maggot therapy, etc).
3. Establish whether relatively simple medical care can speedily return the soldier to duty.
4. If so, do so.
5. If not, discharge them medically, and send them to the VA to die of staph.
So, trauma medicine is where the military excels. Not the fancy stuff.
That makes sense. I think I'm having an idiot hour.

I know correlation doesn't equal causation, but how long have you been living in Tuscon?
