OMG NOES! Scores of people dead, and American tourists are STRANDED! There are LOOTERS and even a CROCODILE! Those people must be stopped from taking posh valuables from upscale stores! I heard someone even stole an outboard motor... during a FLOOD! The nerve of these people, an outboard motor isn't even a necessity.
Ed Smith, who is white, was airlifted out on a military plane, but was forced to SEE DEAD ANIMALS.
Tourists, including MANY AMERICANS, had their weekend COMPLETELY RUINED. Look at them, they have to sit on the ground and cannot escape viewing -- and even hearing -- the weeping orphaned children of recently-dead villagers whose homes have been completely wiped out. It's like a nightmare -- one they cannot escape for up to several days.
Fortunately, other resort towns will likely be spared the worst of it, to the vast relief of vacationers. There may or may not be farming villages that will be severely affected, with high death tolls and livelihoods destroyed, but they are only populated by natives so we don't know or care.

Our getaway paradise is muddy.

:horror:
Meanwhile, theres a more important pressing issue of keeping the capital's central plaza (the zocalo) from being overrun by angry teachers and students protesting the educational reform in a symbolical fashion...
so these more pressing issues prevent the executive from organizing the relief efforts, because "showing-these-bums-who-is-boss" outranks in priority the devastation and death in the "smudgier" parts of the country.
yay!
Did they write this with a straight face and everything??
It's a bit mind boggling that:
QuoteAt least 40,000 tourists in Acapulco — including many Americans, who have flocked to the sunny vacation spot in the state of Guerrero for decades — were stranded after the airport terminal was flooded.
and
QuoteWith the twin roads from capital Mexico City to Acapulco blocked by flooding, tourists have seen the weekend turn into a desperate struggle to get weeping children, elderly parents and even a few bedraggled dogs back home.
are just a mere few lines from:
QuoteAnd Interior Minister Osorio Chong warned that more landslides are possible as police wade into the bloody muck and try to evacuate the village's remaining 45 residents.
and
Quote"It was like an explosion burst open the mountain, and in seconds the earth came down and the houses appeared to run, while others were buried," local woman Amelia Saldana Gregorio told Mexico's El Universal newspaper. She said she lost four children and her mother in the horrific landslide.
Five family members gone, but those poor tourists and their dogs have to wait a few extra days to get home.
I know, preaching to the choir, but...it's awful, and a bit disgusting. Exceptionalist reporting aside, I can't even imagine what those villagers are going through. It's horrible

Ugh.
Pedophilia's bad! (if it's happening to white kids).
I guess I'm shocked, but not surprised (if that makes any sense). In a way, I've come to expect this sort of thing, and am becoming more aware of how prevalent it is, but still *shocked* at how okay(?) everyone is with it. Probably don't even give it a second thought because obviously we know who's important. "Hey, those villagers are probably used to this sort of thing anyway, right? But we're here on vacation!"
It is a bit embarrassing to consider how ignorant I, and much of this country, am/is to the news that goes on around the world. I do my best to try to keep up with things (admittedly, a lot through this site) since I can only internet so much at work and have none at home. But many people don't care, are completely unaware of it, or both. I'll start to hear a bit about "Did you know the U.S. media barely even reports on..." and start to get my hopes up, then ..."how much of a Muslim Commu-Socialist terrorist who is going to take our guns away Obama is? You don't know what they're really hiding from us!" And then I get sad again.
I know I'm speaking from a position of somewhat ignorant privilege, but I'm doing my best to be aware of that and notice it around me. This site has certainly helped make it quite a bit more obvious.

Well, this has been going on for years and the US press refuses to report on it at all:
QuoteThe BBC filed a brief report on a 1996 case that was otherwise almost completely ignored by the English-language press: "Mexican police broke up an international child pornography ring based in the resort of Acapulco which they said had at least four thousand clients in the United States."
So I'm not finding it especially hard to believe they value the lives of Americans over Mexicans.
Once again, you can't help but speculate about potential names of clients and political/media/celebrity/whatever links.
If it was 4000+ clients anywhere else, it would have been reported on. You don't get numbers like that unless you can identify separate individual clients too. Given the state of the UK post-savile and Australia's similar woes, I wonder how long it will take for the mass investigation to be started in the US.
