Yeah, he was a winger, but he wrote some fun stories.

Yeah, I liked him too, despite his inferior later works. Where else could I get 15000 pages of weapons specifications, and something of a plot to go along with it?
His original Jack Ryan series, plus
Red Storm Rising were awesome.
Also, even though he was on the right, he usually portrayed bad guys as being fringe elements of their religion or ideology. There was no "we hate all Muslims" or "Liberals are behind all this". So he was very much like Jerry Pournelle and the exact opposite of that shitbag Orson Scott Card.

This is a sad day for contemporary literature. His works were extremely well researched and written, and ACTUALLY ENTERTAINING. My brother is totally in mourning right now.

Yeah. Things jumped the shark a bit with Jack Ryan Jr and Rainbow Six. That's when I stopped reading his stuff. But as you say, classic Jack Ryan and Red Storm Rising are good.
I have no idea if the Splinter Cell games, which he wrote, were decent in terms of plot, mostly because I never played them. They seem pretty popular though.
The series after Rainbow Six (Debt of Honor, The Bear and the Eagle, etc) are amazing.
Rainbow Six was the one dog in the series. And yeah, Jack Jr was a bad idea.
Yeah he lost me with the newer stuff but the Ryan/Clark books were extremely enjoyable. One of the highlights of my time on the Phoenix was when we got to work with one of the ships that featured heavily in Hunt For Red October.
Oddly enough, I've never read on of his books.
Seen a lot of the movie remakes, though.

Got you beat.
Twid,
Never even seen the movies, but kinda feels he missed out on something.

Have you seen The Hunt for Red October at least? If not, start there.

Nope. I am aware that that is the movie adaption of his book by the same name, but have not seen. On Netflix?
