OH yeah and the hospital says if he doesn't pay, they're going to take him to collections.... :aaa:

You know, suddenly, my day doesn't seem so bad.

And, yeah, they billed him for it.

Anyone else here ever see Brazil, the movie where the government bills their prisoners for their torture sessions?

Yeah i can't even....and people wonder why some people flip the fuck out and go on shooting sprees.  I'm not saying it's justified...I'm just saying.

I've had that movie, Brazil, for years but never watched it.

I love that movie. It's so prophetic I think it must have been produced by time-travelers.

But regarding the guy in this article, well, we have traffic laws for a REASON, god dammit. A man can't very well go disregarding the law and then try to sue the authorities (under the same system of law) when he receives a bill for all the time he wasted being innocent.

I'm curious, has anyone in America ever survived a police encounter? I think the difference between your country and mine is that we kick the living shit out of our law enforcement officials, quite regularly. They seem to respond well to "discipline"

Maybe worth trying?

If I recall, you keep suggesting this, and I keep mentioning that they travel in gangs and are heavily-armed. Assaulting a police officer, or looking like you might potentially think about assaulting a police officer, is a death sentence in this country.

Try googling "Police shoot unarmed man" and you'll see what I mean.

Then try "Police shoot unarmed woman" and "Police shoot unarmed child".

Not only that but culturally speaking, assaulting or killing a cop is an unthinkably distasteful thing to do. Assaulting a fellow citizen is a crime, but not one you really look down on. Fucker may have deserved it. Everyone deserves it, don't they? And violence is the only way to make sure they get what they deserve. But a cop? Man, that's a cop. That's just all sorts of wrong. Killing a fellow citizen? Couple of years in jail, maybe even an acquittal. Unless you're black. Killing a cop? Got the death penalty in your state or not?

It's socially acceptable to insult the cops mercilessly, but injuring one is never considered socially acceptable.

Oh, FFS. Talk about being thorough. I'd bet the police in question still suspect he managed to somehow dispose of whatever he was carrying.

In general, it'd be nice to see more (any) police criticize this shit. Unfortunately the blue wall of silence kicks in hard and the them/us mindset is ingrained. At least the bar has been set for future police atrocities. Just imagine what's happening to the next guy.

Yeah, my bad. I keep forgetting about the killing thing you guys have going on. I'd be surprised if the ratio of bullets in cops to bullets in civilians in britain, wasn't heavily skewed in the public's favour. Of course the actual numbers are unlikely to reach a couple of dozen in any given year. We don't have the right to bear arms over here but we do have the right to punch out the filth if they're giving us cheek.

We really fucking don't.

When I get home I'll link to the amount of people who die in police custody. And how disproportionately those who die are black or from inner city areas.

Cause trouble and the police here WILL kick your head in. And it'll not even reacb headline news. No police officer in the UK has ever been punished by the IPCC fir use of force. And people do die. Weekly, in London.

I'd have to side with demosquid here.

I can see where P3nt's thinking lies. Up until the past couple of decades our cops were largely unarmed and mainly worked through respect. However now they are largely armed (to varying degrees) and rely on fear.

It's also incredibly socially unacceptable to inflict any kind of harm on any UK law enforcement. For example, the BBC carried a story yesterday of a single soldier killed. 1 soldier. 1. When two female police officers died in grenade/shooting attack, it's was a running headline for days.  This bias towards any/all authority is quite common and replicated in the UK press. This leads to self reinforcement creating dangerous situations out of nothing. As punishment is rare and condemnation from their peers absent, abuses persist.

I would strongly suspect a large number of UK police are praying for gun crime to go up as every news item gets them all closer to carrying. Anecdotally, I hear more are willing to carry as well compared to past years. There used to be a trend that the police were resisting being armed so if that's reversing I'd be very worried.

There's a mindset, too, and a bunch of media crap that makes it out like assaulting a cop is somehow MORALLY worse than assaulting a regular citizen.

Uhhh...the cop is armed and trained to kill, and cops stick together. He's got a chance. It's not like punching a baby.

One a week for the past decade or so, on average.

Number of police kicked off the force or even facing disciplinary action - precisely zero.

Of course, that the police and the press are best of friends has nothing to do with why people are completely unaware of this.  Or why Parliament refuses to act.

The idea is that it is an assault on society as a whole.

Society, obviously, being "A collection of individuals who wish to give people forced enemas."

I always thought it was a case of people mistaking a bad idea from a common sense point of view (cops are empowered to carry arms, imprison, use lethal force and carry out criminal investigations, and so killing them is a bad idea for your continued good health) for a bad idea from a moral point of view (killing cops makes you even worse than killing random civilians).

Common sense isn't very popular, but moralizing apparently is.

Pretty much.

I can see "Armed police" making into the standard emergency options in the near future.

"For fires press ONE, for medical emergencies press TWO, for police press THREE, for a violent response press FOUR"

It'll make it easier for the kids to swat each other. Apparently that's a thing now.

http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S3212603.shtml#.UoIYC_n7qo3

QuoteSchaur Ives said the woman doesn't wish to be identified because she considers herself to be a victim of sexual assault. Schaur Ives said the woman crossed the border at a Port of Entry from Juarez, Mexico into El Paso.
A dog alerted to the woman, and Schaur Ives said federal agents stripped searched her at the facility, asked her to undress, to spread her genitalia and to cough. Female agents also allegedly pressed their fingers into her vagina looking for drugs.
The woman claims they didn't discover anything during the on-site strip search, so they took her to University Medical Center of El Paso.
"First, medical staff observed her making a bowl movement and no drugs were found at that point," Schaur Ives said. "They then took an X-ray, but it did not reveal any contraband. They then did a cavity search and they probed her vagina and her anus, they described in the medical records as bi-manual--two handed. Finally, they did a cat scan. Again, they found nothing."

There's a gameshow running somewhere. Cops are contestants, Citizens are the obstacle and show host Sherrif Joe keeps asking the crowd if you can get another hand up there. To laughter and applause. Endlessly.

I wonder if this isn't a consequence of militarizing the police?  A LOT of American police officers have military experience...and the kind of military experience that has been gained over the last decade or so tends to be of an unpleasant kind.  And those with the skills most likely to transfer to a police environment (ie; Army Intelligence) were most implicated in certain...interrogation techniques which involved the complete and utter humiliation and invasion of the individual, often with a strong sexual undertone.

Just putting it out there.

Even better: A lot of them didn't start out as rapists. It was just another task added to the already insane workload. Some may have quit, but that just drives the average horribleness for that group up.

Hot damn they're going to make you wish you were guilty. You're three enemas in and actually not sure whether that painful little knot at the pit of your stomach is something they did wrong or REGRET. Regret that you didn't have the foresight to COOPERATE and pack a bag of weed up there to make life easier for these fine professionals who, AFTER ALL, are only doing what they understand the constitution to require of them.

So now you've got a dozen doctors in a line with a camera on the end of a fibre optic cable, which is flying off the reel as quickly as they can pull it and feed it into you, solemnly chanting "Nothing to fear, nothing to hide, nothing to fear" and you can't help but blame yourself. The cop who busted you is there, watching eagerly, and when you desperately try to summon some kind of anger at him, some kind of expression that says "I blame you" he shrugs helplessly and offers "see something, say something?", entirely defusing your tentative facade of upset. See something, say something. And soon you'll do the same, you'll have no choice. Each of these fine citizens has a cable running through the door from places unknown, up their legs... and you're about to understand the rest.

God you wish you were more guilty. Don't you feel awful for not being guilty enough?
