Basic premise:

Beasties have a standing rule not to use their songs do advertising.

GoldieBlox makes an amazingly cool ad with young girls being awesome, to a song that reworks a beasties song. But it's still an ad.

GoldieBlox PRE-EMPTIVELY sues Beasties, so they can keep running the ad.

Beasties go, "WTF?"

Internet explodes.

You know, while I really like the intentions behind Goldiblox, I really dislike gendered toys. I was totally on their side, though, until they pulled this, because seriously, dick move.

Step 1. Steal music for ad
Step 2. When asked about it, sue
Step 3. Bankruptcy.

Seriously, if this is how they conduct business, they're not going to make it to next Christmas. It's kind of unfortunate, but at least their existence may have helped push the toy market a smidge in the right direction... though not as right as making a truly unisex construction toy would have.

I felt like the Beastie Boys' response was super classy.

Yup. Reframed it like a mofo, too.

If GoldieBlox asked Beasties for an exemption, or some sort of deal, they may have been totally cool with morphing one of their worst songs into something cool.

But they just went all jerk about it.

So wait... what exactly are GoldieBox suing the Beasties for?

Pre-emptive lawsuit, trying to prevent the Beasties from suing GoldieBlox for copyright infringement.

The legal brief gives the cause as "we are suing them because of reasons".

People also have the capacity to NOT be shitnecks. The question for me is, how do we encourage them to tap into this not-being-a-shitneck power?

I think this is the question that most large scale (City State-wide and up) systematic ideologies have been attempting to address since the very dawn of civilisation.

Most of it comes down to a mix of Carrot and Stick with a bit of woo. It has of course been tremendously successful.

How I wish I was one of you.

You need a fuckload of money to get any benefit out of AMERICATM. It wouldn't work for us.

Fuck Goldieblox. It's an AD, not a parody.

Dickweeds pretending to be good guys by "empowering girls" (for money, of course) are the same as dickweeds pretending to be good guys by "preaching God's word".

This is just a variation of IT'S FOR TEH CHILLERIN.

Go Beasties.

If that happens, fuck them too.

Can this set a precedent for politicians to use songs by people who hate them? Like when Reagan used Born in the USA and Sarah Palin used Barracuda?

Nope.  In those cases, it's perfectly legal to use, so long as they pay ASCAP/BMI.

Fuck them for what? So far  the only thing they've done is write two letters to Goldiblox, the first one saying "So hey, what's up with you using our song?" and the second one saying "Are you seriously suing us for asking what's up with you using our song?"

Dropping the lawsuit they haven't made yet.
